Broncos Player Movement and Rumours 2020

Boyd is the best all round FB in the game bar none, and Milford is a 23 year old who has performed in clutch situations, including a GF, and will be playing for Aus and QLD in the next year. How are they not worth a bit of cash?

Boyd is definitely one of the best FB's going around and probably the most consistent. The existing combo's he has with the QLD origin players probably give him the edge in selection for AUS. I think it was partly Boyd that was responsible for the move of a lot of FB's defending in the line and his positioning and reading on opposition plays is great. His play making is second to none and probably better than our halves at the moment.

One area I think he lacks in compared to other FB's is his line breaks/tackle bust etc. He dies in the tackle too often and rarely breaks a tackle coming out of our own end. If he could add this back to his game, I don't think anyone would be questioning his status as the games premier fullback.

I think it will be interesting come origin time, if Slater has a successful comeback before then, will they stick Boyd back on the wing?

Submitting in the tackle allows a quick ptb though, if Boyd knows there's nothing on, might as well help get a roll on.

I don't see it as a problem, not everyone can or will be Karmichael Hunt.

Agreed, just saying that I think it is the one thing missing from his game.

Thats true, but I feel he can do more than submit, at least try and drive into the defence when you take it down.

Kahu has stated that he is open to leaving the club if the offer is good enough and has not ruled out going back to NZ.

But his preference is to stay at the Broncos.

Off-contract Broncos star Jordan Kahu says he’s open to best offers
RIKKI-LEE ARNOLD and PAUL MALONE, The Courier-MailMarch 6, 2017 3:19pm

JORDAN Kahu says he will do what’s best for his young family when it comes to securing his future beyond 2017.
The Broncos star and Kiwi international is off-contract at the end of this season, along with a number of his Brisbane teammates.

While players like Anthony Milford and Darius Boyd are expected to be among the first re-signed by the club, Kahu’s future is still up in the air.

The centre said staying in Brisbane would be the easiest option as this stage with his young family, but did not go as far as Milford to say he was only considering the Broncos.

With his partner Jess Kent due to give birth to their second child next month, Kahu said he would keep all options open.
“I am doing everything for them right now,” he told The Courier-Mail.

“I have to make sure I’m looking after them first and foremost. I have to see what the best offer is and make sure I’m doing the best for my family.

“I haven’t spoken to my manager about anything yet but I will be open to anything. (But) it would be a lot easier if we stayed here.”

Kahu is yet to speak to his manager about his contract negotiations. The Kiwi back, whose family lives in Wellington, was linked to a possible move to the Warriors last year but denied the rumours at the time.

However, now that he was off-contract, he did not rule out returning to his home country.

“I’ve always thought about going home,” Kahu admitted.

“Auckland (Warriors’ base) is pretty far from Wellington though and that’s where both of our families are. I don’t think it would help that much moving back to New Zealand.

“But I’m open to anything.”

As well as Kahu, Milford and Boyd, the likes of Adam Blair, Alex Glenn, Andrew McCullough, Josh McGuire, James Roberts and Corey Oates are all off-contract at the end of this season.

Oates told The Courier-Mail he would also keep his options open.

“If you’re happy with someone else’s offer then you do look into it,” he said.

“It all comes down to where you think you’ll play best at, what they want to do with you playing-wise, and money does become a factor if it’s a big difference.

“It’s pretty rare that it’s a massive difference in offers. It all comes down to where you’d rather place yourself.”

Meanwhile, centre Tautau Moga returned to Broncos HQ on Monday, following a health scare at training on Sunday.
The giant centre, who made his Brisbane debut against Cronulla on Thursday, left Red Hill early over the weekend after suffering a suspected heart problem. However, he was back on Monday for a recovery session with the rest of squad and was expected to be fit for Friday’s clash with the Cowboys.

Typical nothing article really around contract time. Players always consider every offer before making a final decision.

he does pretty much dismiss the "go home" rumour about going to the Warriors though since Auckland is quite a distance from where is family is in Wellington

Yeah, sounds about right.

He's pretty settled up here as far as I know, but if a club offers him something ridiculous like St Merge did with Hunt, then all bets are off, of course.

I definitely can't see Kahu leave the club that has gone around the world for him and made him the player he is.

Kahu is a good player. He knows how to pass, score etc..

But to me, Boyd is a far better footballer. Kahu doesn't have the awareness, the vision, the smarts (well he hasn't shown it in his time at fullback in first grade), the organizing ability and leadership that Boyd has. Boyd is able to read the play so well and come up with the right option and he does it with absolute ease. His organizing at the back was a crucial part of our defence in 2015.

If giving Boyd 1 million and keeping him here meant we lost Kahu, I would be fine with that.

Allan can learn from the games best.

There is merit in this argument too. I also want to be clear (and I'm sure I speak for @Porthoz as well), we don't want to lose Boyd and I don't think either of us is suggesting that Kahu is better. In my opinion, there is quite a gap between the two. The issue is with how much Boyd will cost us, not with who is better or anything else. If it can be worked out so that he doesn't cost as much as is being suggested, then he is very high up on the priority list of re-signings.

A rumor doing the rounds on social media saying we're re-signing Oates later this week, and his contract will be that of a second rower, with plans to move him there later this year.

I can see how this is gonna play out. Oates moves to 2nd row, Thaiday drops back to the bench as an impact prop and Mead comes onto the wing.

Can't see Oates moving into a starting forward position. No way is he fit enough.

I think the plan is for Oates for play a bit in the forwards this year and then make the full transition next year.

I don't agree with the Oates situation TBH. I understand how it normally works, in that wingers can normally be attained cheap, because it's where you blood your rookie backs, and being young, fast, and able to contort is a winger's recipe.

In this case though, are there many, if any, wingers that can offer what Oates does? Radradra would come close, but his handling is worse than Oates' and I suspect he won't even see out the season. There are plenty who can finish like him, and there are a few that can really pump out a good 15 - 20 metre run to get the set of 6 off, but are there any that can do both? Why does he have to be in the back-row to earn good money? I'd be quite happy to pay him $600 - $700k (post cap increase) to stay on the wing and dominate.

In fact I am concerned a move to the back row will blunt him - he may be big and strong, but his speed will only be utilised if he makes a line break, his finishing ability will mean jack shit if he's not diving for the corners, and he won't be getting our sets off to a rolling start. And that's even before we factor in the wear & tear.

Great post!! I want Oates to stay in the backs his whole career or at worst, a late-career Chris Lawrence style move. In my opinion, the only player who offers what Oates does on the wing is Mansour. No one else, as you said, can match the two. Well, Rapana did last year but let's see if he can back it up this season.

I second that. Pay him to stay on the wing.
Save his knees.

I don't see the rush to get him into the forwards, I'm with you guys. He offers shitloads where he is.
