Broncos Player Movement and Rumours 2020

On Blake Green joining the Broncos this season:

Matt Johns:

“Last week in the Warriors’ game, the win over the Broncos, (Green) was the best player on the field. He kicked them to a victory. There are three clubs absolutely desperate for a playmaker - Titans, Dogs ... Titans as far as an experienced playmaker, Dogs definitely need an experienced playmaker ... and the Broncos. Why I like Blake Green is he’s gone the long way around. He has had to go here, there, all over the place, and found his best football at the back end of his career. Some of the young playmakers out there need what you call practical learning on the run. They need a player out there on the field. Blake’s saying to young (Brodie) Croft, ‘Listen mate, we’re under the pump here, don’t try to force the play, let’s just put the ball in the far corner of the field’.”

Paul Kent:

“There’s going to be different repercussions at each of those clubs. Dogs need a player who’s going to be around for a couple of years but they need to look beyond that. Broncos need someone right here, right now. They’re the club I think that should really be going hard at him (Green) because he will fix so many of their problems immediately."

I doubt we can afford Green and I don't think we have a spot inside our 30... but I guess that doesn't matter to NSWRL... and they don't give a shit about the Broncos anyway so why do they bother pretending to care what happens

Two weeks ago these flogs were lamenting the fact that the Broncos weren’t giving Dearden a run as he is their long term halfback. Something along the lines of, “Why would you sign Brodie Croft when you’ve said all along Dearden is your long term halfback?” Now they want us to sign another half? These guys just run with the narrative they like without any responsibility to anything they have said in the past.

it's almost like they're the media and they're paid generate outrage and discussion points.

i guess the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about at all.

Honestly I'd probably take Green on a one-year deal to provide some leadership around the club. If he's performing better than Croft or Deardon then he can take the #7. If not, he can tutor them...the rumour is that he wants to end up in coaching anyway, so why not? He'd be a handy pickup for some experience IMO.

I actually think it makes a lot of sense. You get rid of a lot of deadwood at the end of 2021 and that allows you to compete on the guys you actually should retain:

Fifita (Retain - first priority)
Staggs (Retain - third priority)
Niu (Retain - last priority at this stage, likely higher in 12 months time)
Coates (Retain - second priority)
Herbie (if he signs a 12 month deal as well) (Retain - not pay over)
Milf (Do not offer new contract - kick on the way out)
Bird (Do not retain regardless of how he goes next year unless on minimum wage)
Dearden (Retain - fourth priority)
Turps (Retain if can't get Grant)
Glenn (Let retire)
Macca (Let leave and thank him for his whole-hearted effort)
Flegler (Retain but not pay over)
Bullemor (Retain on minimum wage)

Is Isaac Luke staying beyond this year? We’re gonna need him for another season I reckon.

We would have to subsidise his contract no doubt about it.
If the rumour of him moving up to 800K next season is true I'd gladly chip in 300K for him to move on. I'd then add 300K to the leftover and chase the Roosters Manu or Cronulla's Ramien.

Oh please be true! Ship him out now if possible.

Wouldnt surprise me if its up to 50% of his contract. We arent in a good position to bargain with teams. We are desperate to fix our cap, he has had injury after injury, no way clubs are going to take much of a gamble with him at around 500k a year.

Would it really matter though... $500k is useful to us now compared to a guy that we haven’t had the use of for 3 years.

In all likelihood Bird leaves at the end of 2021 anyway and the best he can hope for on his next contract is probably $600k.

If Canterbury offer him $2.4m over 4 years and we offer him the same does he stay in Brisbane for another 4 years or does he head back home to Sydney

I'd rather keep him next year. What's the point of moving him on to save 400k on the last year of his contract? May as well keep him and see what he can offer.

Unless we're saving that money to sign a new player NEXT year, I don't see any point in releasing him.

He came to us with a busted shoulder and has has on-going sternum problems, then his knee goes, so I'm beginning to think yeh he's a tough hombre, but his body is not up to the rigours of NRL. We should punt him the first chance we get.

Patty's display last night suggests we have a ready made lock with an extremely high ceiling. If he adds a bit of ball plying to his game he'd be in the same mould as Brad Clyde/Bob Lidner. This really makes Birdy surplus unless he's moved back to centre and I think between Staggs/Herbie/Coates/Arthurs (Isaako?) we have that spot well covered too.

I'm not sure tbh. Fit he is the best center we have, but thats a very big if in regards to his fitness. I'm not so sure the board would allow another club to take a player from us where we pay a massive portion of his salary.

Imagine if Bird joined someone else next year.

Would end up being the absolute worst signing in Broncos history, with daylight 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and honestly probably 5th-10th. Good lord.

Though if he stayed, I'd probably be surprised if he didn't get another season ending injury next year too.
