Broncos Player Movement and Rumours 2020

Take this with a pinch of salt, but Slothfield reporting Staggs is after a new agent and wants out of Brisbane. I love Kotoni as a player, he has been one of my favourites since i first saw him playing at Redcliffe, but i dont know why i'm just not bothered if he leaves if he starts chasing a move and we end up with all the bullshit that went on with Fifita. We should make him a good offer, and if he turns it down move on. We have stuffed up enough contracts in recent years. Time to play hardball i think. We have become pushovers when negotiating contracts.
There is zero substance in that story other than Rothfield saying he wants to leave when his contract is up.

From the same column.

Identify the players you want, and sign them to 2-3 year deals whilst they still have 12+ months on the current contract.
That should be the modus operandi.
With that said, I find all the commentary about "letting X player go" rather comical (OK annoying) when so often it's just not true.
Letting a player go means "Hey X sorry but we are not making you an offer".
Example; losing Fifita was not letting him go. We wanted him, made him a strong offer, but someone else offered him substantially more.

I've had an idea, do you reckon we could get Vunivalu to change his mind on rugby? He is an absolute grub but he is a grub who is an excellent winger. We could use him a lot.

It's not a terrible idea but I don't think we should worry too much about outside backs. We need to follow the Parramatta model and focus on getting our spine right and then build our team around them. An experienced prop would also help while our young pack matures.

If this is true, the obvious issue is bigger than just losing Staggs. I love Staggs as a player, as I do Fifita and TPJ. All the star talent either leaving or trying to leave is a huge fucking problem. Especially considering what the club sacrificed to keep the young stars and build toward the future.

we killed the culture, showed 0 loyalty to experienced players, shed all leadership from the team all in the name of retaining young talent. If we lose TPJ, Fifita, Staggs and whoever else then what exactly tf do we have?

This is exactly what I've been thinking. We've sold the soul of the club to keep these young blokes, now they want out when the going gets tough.

Staggs posted this earlier today. Make of it what you will
Whether or not he's telling the truth (I think the truth but I'm not a mind reader and this season is cursed), this is exactly what players should do for their fans when these BS rumours come out. The fans are suffering this season, show us you care and are here to help us turn it around, not looking for an exit when the times get tough...

When are we going to put a 1.5 million dollar, one year deal in front of Smith?

Think if we could only afford 800k for fifita next year we are not affording 1.5 next year for smith

ive said this before....we should be keeping close tabs on Holbrock rest of this season and next....

Potentially a good coach in the making there in him...

As for our spine; well, something no-one seems to have factored in is the repetitional damage being done now to the club and in the future...

So we may have to accept paying overs to get that 2nd or 3rd tier players to make that spine up...

I hope it doesn't come to that...but I have serious doubts now..

Say at the end of 2021; if we cant find internally a long term fullback, 5/8th, Lock and maybe even hooker then we really need to start building a watch-list of guys who's contracts are ending that the 2022 cap space we should have can go to;

Deardens a lock...if he stays...

So how can we build around him?

Fullbacks -Dufty, Tedesco Jarome Hughes off contract

5/8th - Jake Clifford & Billy Walters off contract

Lock = Finucane & Liam Martin off contract

Hooker - Sam Verrills, Cam MacInnes & Jazz Tevega off contract

Not a whole lot but.....beggars cant be choosers....

My Advice; hope to Christ we can find most of what we need internally.....like Penrith have done...

I think it was that we were only prepared to pay Fifita 800k

if 1.5 million would guarantee Smith coming to us ... i think we'd find the cap space

I think the Broncos problems you know started when they paid Milford a million a season. He had a wonderful purple patch but they were still paying on potential. Since then all of Haas, Flegler (reportedly), TPJ, Lodge, Seibold and Joffa have been paid inflated wages based on potential. Then the horrible over the hill contracts to Boyd, Gillett and Kahu compound the error.

For 2021 clear:
Isaako
Oates
Bird?
Offa
Milford
Hoppa
TPJ &/or Lodge

Happy for the club to chip in 30-40% of their contracts + Boyd’s, Fifitas and Kahu’s $ that should be enough to free up space for C.Smith. Plus go after another 1 or 2 older heads.

How good is fantasy land.

Doesn't Lodge have 2 (yes t w o !) years of player options? Those guys with options are going nowhere. It is easy to secure most of your players with generous offers, just like racking up the purchases on your credit card because you can deal with the payments sometime in the future...
