Broncos Player Movements and Rumours 2013

The Broncos don't have a money tree & I don't want them to spend over a players worth, just to sign a 'classy' player.

Reading the Mole's twitter, the Broncos wanted Widdop but weren't going to spend that much on him.

I think spending $1 million on a transfer fee for Tomkins is crazy. He would be a massive gamble IMO. He looks worth a shot but $1million plus whatever contract he wants is pretty crazy.

I disagree.

C'mon mate, we're the richest club in the game and transfer fees don't count as part of the salary cap, if there's one place we have an advantage it's money off the field so we should use it when an opportunity like this comes up, Tomkins looks as good as any fullback in the game, including Slater, he's got a mean passing game (awesome flick pass too!), he can kick, runs although who really knows about his defence. Of course it's hard to judge from a different competition and all but he's ridiculously highly rated in England so that must count for something.

Every other ESL player that has come across has done very well so I don't think they're a huge gamble.

How can we be he richest club? Isn't the salary cap suppose to be equal?

Salary cap means you can only spend x amount on your squad. Doesn't mean you don't have f*** tons additional money

That only limits how much you can spend on the salaries of the top 25 players on the club roster.

All the off-field stuff like gym facilities, coaching, medical and support staff are all outside of the salary cap and what clubs can spend on with the money they make from ticketing sales, sponsorships and NRL grants.

A transfer fee is not paid to the player, it's paid to the club that currently has him to have them agree to release a player from a contract so when a rare talent like Tomkins becomes potentially available we're one of probably 2-4 clubs that can afford to pay a transfer fee to have Tomkins released from his current contract.

Here we go Spwn overrating a player after watching YouTube highlights. He is unproven at NRL level.

I don't think the Broncos are too concerned about the fullback position. The impression I get is that Jordan Kahu is seen as the heir apparant and the hope is that he gets a few games under his belts before the club really gets behind the move.

Of course if a player of Josh Dugan's talent falls into our lap, we'll make a play but I don't think we're going to throw millions of $$$ at a player like that.

Halves is a different story but I still don't think will write any blank cheques. I can see us bringing in some up and comer who gets a very mixed reception.

I also fully expect we'll sign a forward or two which will have some fans scratching their heads but will be handy squad purchases.

James Graham is a gun who came from english league, same with Ellis, Burgess brothers.

So what if he's unproven at NRL level? Everyone who is proven at NRL level was at some point unproven at NRL level, and we failed to sign all the proven at NRL level players that were available. Tomkins looks absolute class and would be a great addition. Who gives a **** if we pay a transfer fee, it doesn't affect our ability to sign players.

Unless you own shares in BBL I don't see why it should matter to you one iota.

Sorry boss, I forgot you're the only one with an opinion worth having. I'll be sure to make sure you agree with me in future on what constitutes a quality player because apparently me giving a pretty solid reasoning as to why he'd be great in the NRL means nothing. I mean I could just resort to making condescending posts towards people I disagree with.

After all, Tomkins is playing in England Rugby League which is a completely different game so it would be poor logic to connect the dots and assume his skills would be transferable and using other ESL players who have been very successful would be another poor use of logic to assess transferable playing quality.

OMG, Spwn just bit back at someone.

Okay, who are you and what have you done to Spwn?!

Having a sook because I don't agree with you. For the record is be stoked to sign Tomkins but a transfer fee is out of the question IMO. Why should we pay a transfer fee? Absolute joke. We aren't that desperate to pay $1000000 as a transfer fee.

Because he's signed till 2015! We paid the Bulldogs a transfer fee to get Hannant in what was a remarkably similar situation with him being signed for a few more years and all. I don't remember exactly what kind of value we paid to the Bulldogs but I remember it was something in the range of 100-300k worth.

Hannant is a great player and all but Tomkins is Tomkins, he's a fullback who's young and looks to be incredibly talented. Last I hear the club would agree to release at closer to 750k. Pretty much every sport in the world has clubs paying transfer fees, Tomkins is the only player in the ESL worth paying a transfer fee for and as far as on the market quality goes, there's no player even close to what Tomkins offers who is currently off-contract (well Dugan but I won't go there!).

That's the way it works in most countries and sports codes. Buying out the contract is probably the only way to get a player as highly rated as Tomkins.
If there is a club who can afford this, it's ours!

Whether it's worth to spend the money on this guy is very much a matter of personal opinion... I probably would take the gamble, because this kid seems to have heaps of talent, and could even turn into a decent 5/8!

We paid a transfer fee for Hannant?? **** me what a joke.

Seems impossible to google the information on that transfer fee but IIRC it was something like we offered the Bulldogs 20,000 or so free tickets for Bulldogs V Broncos Suncorp games which has a real value of 200-400k in $ but no direct cost to the club. I can't find the article that explained the agreement though, it's very hard to find. It was something along the lines of when Bulldogs sell memberships they can include a Suncorp Broncos V Bulldogs game in it as an extra as part of that agreement.

I seriously don't remember the specific details though.
