So there isn't much on the market, because we have held onto a contracted player? Oates having a contract for the past 4 years has dictated the market availability? Nobody is doubting his contract at the moment is too high, not one person has suggested to recontract him at his current deal.

You are saying there are better options, yet haven't named one. And you're gonna need to pay an extra 20% for this replacement, because that's the discount that kicks in on Oates contract as of 2022 being the only long serving player at the club.

Reynolds is also eligible for the subsidy as he’s played NRL for over 10 years. But the rest of your point stands.

Yes exactly. If we tried to ship him off earlier like others we have offloaded we would have been in a better position to find a replacement than now when there is little external options in off contract players.

We have Lee coming in at centre and cobbo and herbie on the wings is a better internal option than Oates in my view.

Better options externally is hard to suggest now given the lack of quality in off contract players. We would need to seek out a contracted player to be released and its hard to gauge how realistic these options would be.

Yes you are right it depends on the freight we pay for Oates but I still think we can get a decent replacement with the remaining cash. I would take the same approach with Isaako too as I don't see much value in playing them.

The reality is all outside backs ruck it out and no back can be held back to put the polish on tries only. Cobbo Staggs and Herbie and other backs can all contribute effectively to making metres at the starts of sets and do there job in attack. Admittedly Isaako and Coates are not good at this but I don't think they will be there next year. Good starts to a set is not binary based on Oates being or not being there.

In my view Oates' metre making is not enough to make up for his positional and error making deficiencies. Not having him there does not automatically presume his replacement and his team mates are incapable of making a metre.

If Staggs and Cobbo are making 19 runs a game being battering rams the chances of them being less effective in attacking positions are high. They are your strike players.
Players like Issako, Coates, Arthurs, Nui aren't good at bending the line back and starting your sets well and these are the types of players you would get if you were to trade your metres for less errors and positioning as you said.
Oates finds his front and a quick play the ball on most occasions giving the next guy taking the hit up more of a roll. On many occasions we are going nowhere then Oatesy has a run and we get moving.
Yes other players can do this not just Oates but how many quality wingers are available that do it as well as him.
You see how important To'o is the Penrith and was to Nsw well Oates is our version of that.

Agree with you about Too. Best winger in the game. He does it at both ends. I just don't think Oates is more than a metre eater.

Also agree with you about Arthur's niu Coates and Isaako. Niu the only 1 I'd have in the side at FB. Disappointed we resigned Arthurs.

Makes it even more baffling why Souths let him go.
 
I am thinking Niu would be better as a tackle busting centre, his speed isn't up to scratch for an NRL fullback these days and neither is his ability under the high ball. Herbie's passing game hasn't looked great at centre, maybe try him on the wing for a while. I guess if Niu and/or Oates perform poorly, we drop them for Pereira/Lee. Same goes for Kelly and Gamble.

When is Turbo off contract? I know the odds of dragging him away from Manly are slim but I would be throwing the kitchen sink at him regardless.

You are aware he was like the 4th quickest player across the whole competition just last weekend right and the fastest fullback of everyone? How much faster do you want him to be?
