I think he is a good halfback but the leaving Melbourne factor makes him not worth the risk of paying 700k+. We have already done that reportedly with Lodge, TPJ and Milford and look how that has all turned out.

Seriously though, this news of Dearden was always concerning once it came from Garry. Why aren't our former greats getting in the ears of kids at other clubs who used to be Broncos' fans growing up and trying to entice them? It isn't like we don't have the money according to some.

Why wouldn't they get JT in his ear , same as roosters did with him when they were keen. He was always going to generate interest.

Saying that someone is interested isn't all that hard... pretty sure Coates also met with the cows and nothing has eventuated at this stage.

If you think the Broncos are in a mess because of one bad year the cows were 14th last year (only above us and dogs), 14th 2019 and 13th in 2018. Even in 2017 they scraped into the 8 and had a dream run to the GF only to get flogged.

Their salary cap is in a mess with Morgan and Lolo on a $1m, and Val on $800k.

Payton is reasonably rated, but he gives off a bit of an impersonal vibe. He was at the cows, but jumped to warriors and then dumped the warriors after being given the opportunity for their head role to go back to the cows.

He kind of gives off a vibe that it's a business and he'll do whatever to climb the ladder.

Just on this, to be fair to Payten, he announced at the time that part of the reason for him knocking back the Warriors was that his wife's father (I think) was terminally ill, and then needed to be back in Australia for ease of access to visit him.

That’s fair enough but he just doesn’t seem all that personable when he speaks.

He seems quite abrupt in interviews, and in an interview I recall that he mentioned something like adopting a personal approach to individual players reaped rewards, like it was some astonishing aspect of man management that he didn’t realise and it was several weeks after he took over from Kearney

Sometimes assistant coaches get a lot of raps for their football knowledge, but when they get into head coaching they struggle with the man management. I just think there’s a risk that he could be one of those coaches when you listen to him speak

Dunno much about Payten but it's interesting how he managed to get the Warriors into form within a just a few weeks. All the best coaches slowly improve team performance over several seasons. Obviously I don't know the man and his methods but history tells me that instant team improvement after a sacking has more to do with the old coach than the new one.

Payten did a great job with NZ, but at the same time, he had literally no expectations or pressure on him. That made his job a lot easier in a lot of ways. He wont be afforded the same luxury up North.

Wow I have never heard of a club getting one of their great ex-players to try and convince someone to come. Such an unprecedented move must surely not fail.

What a shame we don’t have any legendary halves at our club as that is clearly the way to recruit successfully.
