I think it would be great if we get to keep Niu for one more season at a reasonable price but if he’s after 350+ and more than one season we probably need to take it on the chin and make do with what’s available.

No point signing Niu and then having to carry him on the cap in 2023 just because we were scared of one year without him.

It’s ugly but I’d rather roll the dice with:
Cobbo, Farnworth, Mead, Isaako 🤢🤢, or some old cheapie for next year and front load contracts preparing for a big raid for spine players in 2023.

I think you let Brodie go for any amount above min wage. The guy is an absolute plodder and a waste of a top 30 spot - any offer to have him off the books and some spare change back from his horrific contract is worth while.

Exactly, Ikin said this in the salary talk “If you get into a situation where you don’t value players correctly, then effectively that can be seen as having less money in your cap.” If we don't have the money for Nui its likely we don't have the money above what we have valued him at. I don't think there is anything on the market for next year that losing Croft would gain unless we factor losing Nui into that also and if do have a couple of 100k unused then we could end up with around 500k to make a play at somebody. I really doubt Nui could demand more than 250k right now.
 
Only his "best game" because it makes for a nice narrative of Broncos letting go their "stars".

He scored a try where all the work was done for him, I could have scored that.

the thing we need to remember is that there is a difference between not having the money to retain someone like Niu and not being prepared to ,pay his asking price

and if we have some unused, but there isn't anyone worthwhile signing, we can used that unspent portion to get Lodge off the books quicker.

Burton i still think is a bit different as he had young halves around him and Penrith obviously chose Luai and Cleary in front of him. I think if they didnt have those two at the age they are he would be staying at Penrith. He wants to play 6.

I think the main point though is Penrith allowed these players to develop and didnt just pick them to get them to sign a contract. There are probably good examples at others clubs as well. I just dont see any club successfully developing an 18-19 year old by playing him week in week out in the NRL unless he is a very, very special talent. I'll always be of the opinion that these players need at least one good year in ISC to aid them in their development. Thats the reason i think we did the right thing with Walsh even though we lost him.

Oh right, I thought you were saying they were patient with those players.

I agree they handled their development well. They did get lucky with Luai that nobody else threw any ridiculous Jayden Nikorima style contracts at him. Both for Penrith and Luai really who was able to just slide into the team when he was ready but also when the team could protect him.

I think of players like Jackson Hastings who were told from age 16 they were a superstar and then asked to help two struggling teams because he's on a modest contract and it all just ends in tears.

Walsh really was an unfortunate circumstance. I'd like to think if COVID doesn't happen, Brisbane wouldn't have struggled as much, Walsh would have had more footy under his belt and a deal could have been arranged before November. The lesson should be to identiy your gun junior talent early, sign them to NRL deals with the idea that the first 18 months will be spent primarily in reserve grade.

Your last paragraph appears to be the plan for Piakura.

I would suggest that the downside of that is you may only get 18 months of value out of them before they will then start commanding more money due to their form.

Piakura is signed to 2024, but he could spend next year in reserve grade getting paid top 30 money and not become an NRL starter until 2023... suddenly 2024 rocks around and he's looking for an extension or possibly looking to make some money (basically what happened with Fifita).

In the case of Burton there was heavy pressure on the Panthers to release him early so in that sense they would've basically got zero value out of a promising junior that they brought all the way through.

It makes it seriously hard to develop and retain talent.

The alternative is you sit and hang back like the roosters until you have a position that needs filling and then cherry pick guys that you want until you land on something that works.

In like the last 5-7yrs they've poached or cherry picked Nikorima, Hastings, Keary, Cronk, Flanagan and Walker... and apparently they also went after Dearden before he re-signed with us, which was lucky for him, because he probably would've been at centrelink by now if he went there.

The NRL could fix all this by making rules that reward development but that would cripple the Roosters so that just can't happen.
 
We can talk to Gutho come Nov 1 for 2023.
Depending on our FB situation for 2022, I'd be trying to get him here for around 700k for 2023.
An effort player and would be a good senior leader along with Reynolds & Capewell.

Yeah my issue with it is he strikes me as the kind of bloke who would dish it out to his teammates out of frustration (irrespective of being the captain) yet be the first to push back if spoken to like that by a senior player.

Hodgo for example would dish it to some of the younger lot when they needed it, but still keep his respect for both his team and leaders.
