Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2021

This time last year I would've said SL is a different beast from the NRL and average players from the NRL can look like superstars over there but with the rules changes I think Hastings would do well now.
Williams from the raiders seems to have picked up Halfback in the NRL beautifully too.

Yeah I don’t think Dearden had such a good controlling game but considering he was in the 6 jersey he played a very eyes up footy game and came away with 2 meat pies cause of it
I know he played with the 6 on his back but it was obvious Kelly was wet-nursing him and letting him call the shots. I have no problems with this as it is a great way for him to learn from an older wiser half and it's all done under less pressure than an NRL game. I think the majority of us last week agreed it was a wise move to let him get some confidence in QCup, but fair dinkum, after one week the impatient are screaming for him to be rushed into the side.

If Kevvie does this he's risking a short term gain for more long term pain and could stuff Deardon's development program for good.

On his two tries btw, his first one was manufactured by Kelly and all he had to do was run into a hole. His second was off a kick that looked to be going nowhere but ricocheted off a defender. Having said that, he had to put himself in those positions to score them so he does deserve some credit. I think playing him with an experienced half for another couple of years will really benefit his learning process. I think @Big Pete suggested putting him at six with Reynolds from Souffs. I think that would be an ideal match up and money well spent for a two year project. Maybe a swap with Milf and some cash would seal up that deal.

It leaves Croft in Qcup to regain some confidence and if he's fair dinkum - he'll fight to unseat Tommy. At present Crofty looks keen to impress but lacks composure and finesse. His defence is solid but he needs to improve his attack for mine.

With the way the rule changes have transformed the game, running halves are more dominant now than ever. It is no coincidence most of the best clubs have at least one (if not two):
Munster/Hughes
Williams/Wighton
Keary
Brown/Moses
Luai
Cody Walker

I don't believe Reynolds will be the answer and i'd much rather see that marquee money spent on a fullback or genuine running halve to partner Dearden. Some of my top targets coming off contract for the 2022 season as follows (even if they won't sign for us, it will at least make their clubs pay overs):
- Papenhuyzen
- Gutho
- AJ Brimson
- Cody Walker

I'd also be looking at Aidan Sezer for next season if we can get him to come back to Australia. His deal with Huddersfield was a 2-year contract and I think he would be good fit with the new rule changes and his experience. plus he is a goal-kicker meaning Isaako would be easily expendable if his form dipped. He is no stranger to living in QLD as he was with the Titans for 4 seasons. Worth a look for sure.

If we had the choice (and we probably don't), I'd still go all in on SJ over Reynolds. I've always loved the thought of SJ in a Broncos jersey, Reynolds not so much.

This is why I was thinking staggs in the halves.

I agree, he should be our #1 target. The only downfall is he is coming back from a pretty bad injury.

The thing with running Halves though is that it requires you to have a really high level organising Dummy Half like a Cook, Smith, Grant, Hodgson etc.

Turpin is a terrific competitor but I think it would be fair to say he's not in the same class as the best Dummy Halves in the game and without that I think it would make us playing a set of running Halves unlikely to succeed.

Too injury prone these days. He doesn't stay fit for long enough to be able to turn things around for us.

I am at a complete loss as to how to solve this squad. Khunt and Issy would be a good start. Milf - lost at sea re him.

Would never suggest we have two running halves with Turpin. Dearden would need to be the controlling, organising half that the spine around him feeds off. IE. Similar style to Nathan Clearly. He is the best player in the game IMO and he has Luai, Edwards and Koroisau around him. All three of those guys are off the cuff and have an up-tempo running game.

Daniel Tupou from the Roosters is off contract. Turns 30 this year.

Is he the sort of buy that's worth it, at say 450k, or are we better spending elsewhere.

I would be worried Roosters wouldnt let him walk especially with Morris Bros ending their career.

Well he could sign today with another team, so the Roosters must at least be considering letting him go.

I'd happily take the Morris bros for a year or two as well if they still want to play on, even at their age.

Yeah, but even Cleary has Koroisau helping steer the team around the park too. It all starts with having a gun Dummy Half these days and Turpin just isn't at that level unfortunately.

Jackson Hastings
100%! Was calling for this last year when we had the chance to sign Hastings. He is very keen for another chance in the NRL.

I fully expect him to end up at the Tigers next year though, if not sooner. Expect some movement at Leichhardt around Brooks and Mbye. One, if not both, will be moved on as Maguire has had a gutful and there will be a cleanout there.

i wonder if there would be a transfer fee attatched if it happened this year

Reading between the lines...looks like Albert Kelly is the guy we need right now.
