Croft exploring other options/SL. I’m all for it, but if he is actively looking that should mean the Broncos don’t chip in anything. I wouldn’t be against chipping in 100k but pretty rough for him to say he wants to look elsewhere and then expect the Broncos are going to chip in for his salary. Yes I get its happened here previously but it‘d be nice for us to stop paying these clowns to play elsewhere.
Hopefully he goes to SL and we pay $0
It's not that simple unfortunately.

If he wants to leave and not take a cent, it's his prerogative, but most of the time it's the club saying "we don't see a future here for you and we're willing to chip in up 50% if you find somewhere else". He's not losing out that way and we still get some money back on our cap.

Unless you're the Titans and Shannon Boyd gives up a big money contract to take up "farming".

Yes, I know. It’s more me trying to get an outcome that favours the club, just for this once.
Talking about farms, surely Boyd can find Croft one somewhere in the UK

I didn't realise that's what he did, in his defence the dude looks like the most like a farmer from any NRL player I've seen.

He was on something like 700k.

This is from the official Titans press release
"Prop Shannon Boyd has been granted a release from his contract with the Gold Coast Titans and will retire to the family farm in Cowra."

Seems legit.

He also had 2 years left on his contract... so he decided to wander away from about $1.2-1.4m .... just because I guess.

Bryce Cartwright also gave up his $600-$800k contract to head down to Sydney with no contract there for him... ended up on minimum wage at Eels

I think it was not long after that Fifita signed for them

But yeah clearly all legit...

Your last paragraph appears to be the plan for Piakura.

I would suggest that the downside of that is you may only get 18 months of value out of them before they will then start commanding more money due to their form.
The key is to be ahead of the curve.

So when they start showing signs of form you bump up their salary and entice them to stick around. When it's clear that they're attracting ridiculous Fifita offers you have to let them go but ideally you wouldn't be too upset paying good money because they're quality players who give your team an edge.

The Broncos actually follow this model and did a fantastic job with Payne Haas - seriously they should be applauded for that. However instead of just 2-3 guns, it became more like 4-6. On top of that, they just made too many poor retention and recruitment decisions.

So on top of developing your players wisely, you also have to cultivate an environment where they can come in and not be under pressure right away.

From what I've seen, the Broncos are taking the right steps to rectify this. Capewell and Reynolds are the exact type of signings they had to nail and if they can nail one more marquee signing it will put them in good stead.

Biting my tongue on suggesting this is something that any journo should have caught on to. Unless of course their bosses told them to leave it alone. Like the NRL, it's hard to tell if it's gross incompetence or blatant agenda/favouritism.

I just cannot believe the gullibility of people surrounding the salary cap. The rich private investors at the titans, roosters, warriors and storm invest MILLIONS of dollars and people honestly expect them to just sit back and play salary cap games with the NRL haha.. They would be shit business people if they didn't rort the cap tbh. What would they have to lose? Honestly? The success of the storm have highlighted thaf it's much, much better to ask for forgiveness then ask for permission....

Didn't TPJ have a tantrum about being owed money from some one? And what was all that stuff around Andrew Gee and his sudden departure?

Of course we rorted the cap with the Andrew gee stuff! That's when we were successful. Every club does, that's the point. Some clubs with rich owners a hell of a lot more though now we are publically listed. What is the point of the cap when all it rewards is how much some backroom people can "manage" it rather then actual fan support or player development. Its an absolute joke
