“There was a general in the first world war who said, ‘I would rather go to war with 100 men who will fight to the death than 1000 who won’t’.

Trouble was those WW1 generals would have sent 100 000 s running into the newly developed machine guns to be slaughtered and said " sticky wicket wot ? "

I agree.

1. Drinkwater
6. Kodi
7. Reynolds
9. Paix

is a pretty solid spine
I like it a lot if it means we don’t continue with our current shit. I reckon its the only thing that’s likely but I’d go:

1. Field
6. Drinkwate
7. Reynolds
9. Paix

I’d also be trying to get Mamouzelos to the club as the hooker going forward because he is class and could be our 9 for a long time now especially considering Mozer is no sure thing and easily 3-4 years off. He is also gettable because he is stuck behind cooky for a while. Next year hopefully something like this:

1. Field
6. Drinkwater/Mam
7. Reynolds
9. Mamouzelos
14. Paix

Latest speculation on the other side of the Tasman is that Reece will stay put in 2023, but Lodge is likely to leave, most likely to the Dolphins. Unless we can turn Selwyn into a fullback, we might need to enter a serious bidding war with the Warriors if we intend to go after Walsh:

Either that or we have a Broncos' special with Lodge's contract:

Lodge has been telling anyone who will listen he wants to go back to Sydney. I'll be surprised if he turns up at Redcliffe.

If we want Reece we need to pull a roosters type move and get Reece's mates who still play for us to get in his ear starting right now.
And if we do go hard for him we still need to develop someone as a back up plan either Selwyn or Herbie.

I'm on board for doing anything to get Walsh back as fullback. I'd sacrifice a Herbie or Cobbo (of course Niu) to make it happen.

Get the quartet of Walters, Ikin, Dave and Reynolds to meet with him, blow whatever smoke they need to up his derriere and say we are looking at you as a 10 year fullback and someone to build our attack around.

I'd have a nibble at Kodi as well to see if he is interested in being the 6 (internally until a better option comes around - Mam ready?)

We are pissing into the wind at the moment hoping a Grant/Ponga/Munster etc comes our way.

I'd feel much more comfortable rolling out this backline next year than the current one.

1. Walsh
2. Oates
3. Lee/Hoeter
4. Staggs
5. Pereira/Mead
6. Nikorima
7. Reynolds
I wouldn't be against Niko... can be our 6 straight off the bat and eventually move to the bench as Mam comes through as well.

I think Niko does his job in attack and I'm not quite sure why he gets such a bum deal at warriors... the only thing I can think of is that Brown inherited him and he's not keen on his contract so he's been pushing him to the bench or out of the team to try and force his hand.

In saying that I think Dolphins will be taking a good look at Niko as well

We have been speaking about our need for a hooker and question marks about paix and Walters endurance, and development time for mozer. It got me thinking that jayden berrell (still only 26 and a specialist 9 that is capable of longer minutes) was only signed for this year at the sharks and is available as of 2023. Would he be a better/more solid option for 2023?

I'd also love us to have a nibble at Sam Verrills. With Brandon Smith joining the Roosters, he'd have to be on the lookout.

Definitely. I was disappointed we didn’t get him this year.

Hypothetically, if all parties were keen, would you do a straight swap next season Haas for Munster?

I have been keeping an eye on him for Newtown and he set up three tries in his debut against the Raiders. He's injured at the moment though.

If Turpin moves on (seems likely), then we will most likely be on the look out for another hooker.

We cant go into the season with only Paix and Walters as hooking options, and then Mozer being about 18 next year.

I think Berrell sounds like a decent shout. Surprised that he's only 26.
