Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

Out of interest the Courier Mail has stated he refuses to train with the Broncos(which goes against his contract obligations) and has been training with Norths Devils. Any truth to that?

And reading it, **** me dead are we being painted as the absolute villians in this.
That's not the way I'm reading it. It's a dispute, but he's the one in the wrong:

"In contravention of his contract, Oloapu has refused to train with the Broncos and has instead been running around with the Norths Devils – a Brisbane feeder club."
"The Broncos are willing to break bread with Oloapu and welcome him back to the club, believing the situation can be saved and Oloapu can have a long career at Red Hill."
"The Broncos reported the Dolphins to the NRL, believing the expansion club was attempting to coax Oloapu out of his Brisbane contract, which is not allowed under the game’s regulations."

Once someone publicly states "I will never play for X as long as I live", it's a pretty hard ask to then play for X. Furthermore, maturity plays a huge part in a person's ability to admit they were wrong and do so publicly. I doubt Karl will be playing for The Broncos any time soon.

Seems more like belligerence. Or an opening offer. Another club might say: "instead of 500k, how about we give you Harry Grant plus Cameron Munster and we'll let you win the next three games?"

Sets a precedent.

Other clubs know if they try poach now, we do transfer fees.

Managers can try pull this shit but this will be the end result. Managers can plot with the player to break the contract for more money elsewhere, but we'll make your new club pay through the nose for you.

End result is the clubs probably won't bother approaching while under contract. Managers won't bother as much because clubs will probably say no to the transfer fee or say yes, but for less money on the contract.

Broncos just need to stick to their guns and be transparent.

If he had his time over he wouldn't have said that. It looks pathetic on his behalf.

Badel is reporting Herbie Farnworth is "set to" sign a multi-million dollar extension until at least the end of 2025.

"News Corp can reveal Farnworth and his management held a secret meeting with Broncos bosses at a Brisbane restaurant on Tuesday night, with the British Test ace verbally indicating his plan to sacrifice thousands to remain at Red Hill beyond this season."

"Farnworth has not formally inked a new deal at this stage, but Brisbane are in the advanced stages of discussions and are confident of formalising an upgrade – possibly before their premiership opener"
Donuts:

“Ever since I have come to the club and met Herbie, he is an incredibly impressive young man. He is everything you want to see in a Broncos player on and off the field and he has earnt the right to be here, he has worked really hard. I don’t know too many 15-year-olds from England who would relocate to Australia to chase their dreams. Herbie is living his dream every day at the Broncos and we’re really proud to have him here. He is highly regarded here as a person and player and we’re looking forward to getting him back on the field this year after an injury interrupted 2022.”
“There is a really good feeling around the group, the guys are really well connected and are a happy group. They are training really hard and they are committed to wanting to play for each other this season."
“From a club point of view, we want to keep our core group together and see how far they can go. There is a lot of talent there, including Herbie, he is one of several guys who have come through our system and that’s going to be our goal – to keep them all together in the pursuit of success.”

Corey Oates:

“He is going to be a massive talent if he keeps his head on. He’s done that well in the last 18 months with what’s gone on at the club and how the performances have been. He’s been a really big improver for us. He’s got a lot more to offer and he knows that. He’s working hard. The World Cup would have been a great experience for him. I’m really happy for him and how he went as an individual. He’s come back really confident and is talking more in the group huddles.”

Stay tuned for Herbie news:

"News Corp can reveal Farnworth and his management held a secret meeting with Broncos bosses at a Brisbane restaurant on Tuesday night, with the British Test ace verbally indicating his plan to sacrifice thousands to remain at Red Hill beyond this season."

Hope that's true, miss the good old days where we'd re-sign our better players for less than others would be prepared to pay and then you'd get the idiot on social media with an IQ of about 5 "they've been fuckin cheating for years!!"

So is Karl in danger of being sued since he is not fulfilling his contractual obligations despite not having a legit reason not to?

I doubt it because we are willing to release him now if we get a fee.

Be interesting to see what does happen if the Dolphins are willing to pay up the transfer fee to get him if its correct about us not wanting to let him go to them. If he wants to go there, can we stop him? I wonder if legally we could actually do that. I guess we could just refuse a release i guess.

I was on the verge of creaming myself when I read the Herbie news ... but then I read the byline, which brought me back to earth.

we hold his contract, so we'd legally be able to decide the conditions of his release. e.g:
  • we could simply reject the Dolphins transfer fee offer, but accept anyone else's
  • we could put in the release that it is on condition that he doesn't play against us for the terms of his contract
