Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

Players were getting loyalty payments and offers seperate from their salary from both sides ARL/Superleague "under the table" and it wasn't exclusive to the Broncos. This is nothing new and I remember reading Alfie's book describing the sort of offers he and other Broncos players were getting from the ARL and Superleague to sign with them and their teams. Don't think for a second if Mundine stayed with the ARL he wouldn't have got seperate payments from his salary cap.

Rothfield reports Mundine has admitted being paid $300,000 under the table by notorious cap rorters, the Brisbane Broncos:

The Man:

“Yes, it’s true. I got a $100,000 sign-on fee with Super League and $350,000-a-season with the Broncos over three years. Then on top of that they agreed to pay me an extra $100,000-a-year on the quiet. In fact, they gave me three lots of the $100,000 in the first year. It was crazy. So that first season I got $750,000 all-up, which was huge money back in 1996. Once I paid tax, I had enough to buy my house in Sydney from one season of footy.”

Did Super League have a salary cap? 😁

There was no salary cap during the Super League era.
That's not the point... although it kind of should be... but that's not the point... Buzz and his subeditors need to fill them inches and they've got their smoking gun from a walking quote machine.

Is Mundine also promoting a fight 🤔🤔

He said about this in a podcast last September with Spanian

You would have to be very naive to think we werent taking advantage of our financial muscle and making payments like that to plenty of players.
I sat next to a fellow at a wake a couple of years ago who worked in finance with Ergon when they were the major sponsors.. he told me a few things about thoroughbreds and clandestine payments

It worked for Melbourne, they copped the fines and the scrutiny as well as having to hand back a few premierships but I have no doubt it's the reason they've been so successful. Them cheating enabled them to have undoubtedly the best spine in the comp.

We were doing it as well for years. Lets be honest, most clubs with access to cashed up contacts have been doing it for years as well. This Mundine article is a bit of a non story really.

SL had no cap, so it wasn't under the table it was just giving you money.

as much as I think ponga is a quality 1 i think he could be a better bench utility/ think a roaming 6/13 , much like ben hunt but better (if fit).
but I think if walsh can hit the ground running Slater wouldn't hesitate to put him in , he's very similar to Billy with his competitiveness and mouth aswell as skill set. i hope it happens because i think Billy would do him the world of good.
Slater has just commented on this subject, inferring him switching to 6 won't affect his chances of retaining 1 for the Maroons:

"I am pretty sure he won’t forget how to play fullback in six months.”
