Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2023

Its a worry that Payne seems to trust their advice tbh. He was stupid enough to think last years episode was reasonable and seemed genuinley confused and upset when the backlash came and like you say, the timing of doing it right now is just ridiculous. As much as i get they want to make money, they have to have their clients best interests at heart and i think Payne is just a cash cow for them.
I reckon a more appropriate title for most of these player managers would be something like ‘new contract negotiator’ or ‘financial maximiser’, because that appears to be their only role..

A true manager would be conscious of the timing & appropriateness & sensitivities of announcements like this for all parties.

Maybe the good managers are

Again, he knows what he is worth. The offers would already be on the table. Going to market just creates a bidding war , which from his point of view is a smart move but it goes against his claim it's not about money. Nobody can be stupid enough to think he is going to market to gauge his value.
Taking ‘it’s not about the money’ and then extrapolating that into not caring about how much he gets paid at all is just ridiculous.

Of course he cares about the money. Literally everyone cares about the money. Even Pat Carrigan isn’t going to play for minimum wage.

His Manager’s statement was actually quite clear and to the point - they’ve had interest for a negotiation after November 1 from all 16 rival clubs, which I honestly wouldn’t doubt is true, and that he’d like to field those offers and weigh up the pros and cons of both. That’s before we even consider any interest from outside the NRL.

He may well sincerely mean it when he says it isn’t ONLY about the money. I suspect if he could get a similar of even better offer to ours from someone like the Roosters or maybe Melbourne, that would objectively be something worth considering or at least getting to weigh up. If he could get a sky high offer out of someone like the Bulldogs or Tigers etc, that might have to count for something too. I’m sure they have a fair idea what he’s worth, but realistically without a contract on his Manager’s desk, all the talk from those clubs is still just talk - most clubs would likely have to shift their own deck chairs before November 1 to fit him in, and then likely also get the NRL to sign off on anything as well, before a deal of this magnitude can be taken seriously and signed by Haas’ management team. The bidding war certainly worked for David Fifita and it’s just plain good business sense for Haas team to do the same here. We can try and hardball him but anyone can see from an outsiders perspective that he has literally all the leverage right now, so we really don’t have a great deal of choice right now. He IS in demand and it’s a luxury his performances have afforded him in this negotiation.

I’m pretty comfortable that if we’re close enough, we should be good enough to get him over the line. We don’t need to be the top bidder, but we probably also can’t afford to get significantly outbid by another powerhouse like the Roosters either, because once you add in those ‘culcha’ payments on top, those offers are always on the radar for just about every star player in the NRL that ever comes off contract.

If it wasn't just about the money, he wouldn't have asked for a release last year.

He had already been upgraded.

It all started to turn to shit with Haas when SBW, Mundine etc came into his life.

The unfortunate thing here is - except Payne, everyone else see this clear as a day. He’s devoted to them & they control him. Toxic fuckers.

Haas’ agent Ahmad Merhi is in contract talks with Donuts today:

“Payne actually got an offer from an NFL club. They called me in March. They felt Payne had the size and dimensions to make it, but their roles seem pretty structured to me. The NFL team was genuine about taking him overseas to a camp. They wanted Payne to go to a testing camp outside the US where they bring in different athletes from sports around the world. The NFL team made the offer but I said what if Payne doesn’t even pass the camp or would that team really take a chance on him, we can’t take that risk."

“The NFL have scouts around the world and they thought Payne had potential, but Payne shut it down pretty quickly, so it shows this is not just about the money for him.”

“My gut feeling is he will stay at the Broncos."
"I don’t see that Payne has an issue with the club, but the crux of the problem in the first place was Payne feeling his deal wasn’t fair, or reflective of his performances. He loves ‘Kevvie’ and he loves the Brisbane Broncos, he loves their fans and everything about the club. We have built a pretty good relationship with the Broncos over the last three months and the people that run the show there."
“We’ve had interest from all 16 clubs, we’ve sent out an email letting the clubs know of our off-contract clients and they have all come back about Payne Haas. I honestly believe it will be very hard to get him out of there, but he just wants to tick that last box around his value. We just want transparency on his true value and Payne employs me, so he will make the final decision."
“I am being totally transparent with the Broncos and his full commitment is to Brisbane until the end of the season. He hasn’t had the chance to test his value, so we want to make sure his deal is fair on the open market and if it is, he will never complain in the future.”
“I have had interest from an international rugby outfit and their offer was huge. Payne wants to play premiership football, so it’s very easy to work out the top four sides in the comp. Last year when he looked at a release, the Broncos weren’t a finals team, but now they are a serious contender. We can’t entertain every team, but Payne is competitive and he wants to be in a successful team, which Brisbane are at the moment. I know several big clubs are keen, everyone has to look at their rosters, but Payne is happy at the Broncos and he likes playing under Kevin Walters, who is a total gentleman."
“If I get an offer from the Broncos I can’t refuse, then we would definitely sign before November 1, but right now it’s in his best interests to wait until November 1. For the moment, Payne is committed to Brisbane … his heart and soul is with them.”

Correct. This might have already happened, who knows! I would think they wouldnt be "testing the market" if they had though.
What if they said we want $1.5m and the Broncos went nah that's too high... if you can get that from the market then good luck to you.

"We're testing the market!!"

Highly possible but Roosters etc wouldnt pay that much. Im thinking 1.1 is his number.

I’m genuinely of the belief that Broncos is where he wants to be but his desire for money might outway that. Seem to be a case of him going after what he is worth (which is whatever you can get) but not realising that any club that takes him on with that sort of deal nearly can’t possibly compete for a comp. It’s within his rights and I think he will stay but need to be ensuring that we put ourselves first in these negotiations and if that means holding out on the price than so be it. But one thing for sure is, the second Payne is no longer gettable we go after Arrow and Mo HARD

Best thing we can do is put 50 on Canterbury tomorrow, without Haas. But I’m actually worried that we will just get away with a W or go down to them. Our mentality against these lower placed teams is not good.

Surely there is better things to spend your cash on than giving it a wealthy bookie

We need a massive game from Reyno and the makeshift forward pack to pull this one off at the moment.

Soo many outs for us and a lot of things in their favour.

Any sort of win will do for me... I dont care how damn ugly it gets... just need to limp over the line with the cavalry coming back next week (Haas, Patty, Walsh, etc.)
