Broncos sign Pangai Jr for 2017

Is it just me, or are we absolutely stacking the decks with young islander forwards? History tells is that they develop earlier, hence they dominate in age-based comps, but once, um, the whiteys catch up physically they're no longer as dominant. Not only do we have a stack that have been in our system for a while, but actively recruiting even more. Is it a matter of numbers? Grab the most promising, wait for the best one(s) to stand out and hold on to them? Obviously, this isn't a racist thing, just curious.

I'm really glad we got him early, he'll definitely get a run around origin time.. We've now got incredible depth and potential coming through, have a look at the Australian U20 side last year..

Maroon = Current Bronco
Blue = Ex-Bronco

1 Jackson Hastings
2 Brenko Lee
3 Robert Jennings
4 Jordan Drew
5 Valentine Holmes
6 Drew Hutchison
7 Ashley Taylor

18 Jai Arrow

Not to mention Jamayne Isaako, who was the Fullback for the NZ U20 side they played against, Elijah Alick, who probably would've been in the squad if not for injury.. and Alex Barr & Paul Byrnes who represented the QLD U20 side and were not far off selection.

Can't wait for him get his chance. I'm good friends with Sia Soliola. Tells me he caught his eye the day he arrived in Canberra.

Purely out of boredom, I'm guessing this might be our Baby Broncos side at origin this year, presuming all the usual suspects are picked, and Roberts doesn't play for NSW.

1. Jordan Kahu
2. Corey Oates
3. Jack Reed
4. James Roberts
5. Lachlan Maranta
6. Anthony Milford
7. Ben Hunt (c)
8. Joe Ofahengaue
9. Andrew McCullough
10. Jarrod Wallace
11. Alex Glenn
12. Caleb Timu
13. Adam Blair

14. Kodi Nikorima
15. Francis Molo
16. Tevita Pangai
17. Herman Ese'ese

Swap Eden for Maranta and I reckon your close....

ps not a bad team eh? They'll go alright at Origin time....

That all depends on how Eden fairs, I hope he makes the step up but he has a lot to prove in the NRL, otherwise Maranta comes in.

Brent Sherwin, released a year early after signing a 5 year deal in the excitement of '04 premiership and letting Thurston go to sign him to said deal.

SBW walked out 1 year into a 5 year deal.

Zillman has struggled but Titans don't have the money to pay him out so stuck.

Campese released after playing NSW CUP and injured his was a 6 year extension.

DCE remains to be seen.

I can't think of any that have gone well.

the thurston deal was more complicated than that!!!!

sbw does what he wants and it actually hasnt cost the dogs any cap space as he walked.

zillman was a horrible decision from searle, but in reality with the cap increases zillman is not highly paid when you average it over 5 years.

campese wasnt a bust, and it hasnt cost the raiders.

so just because they sign a 5 year deal it doesnt mean they will be there for all of that. its actually quite brilliant from the clubs and can also work well for the player. they can move players at will these days and as we have seen with copley, jennings, blair, pangi and so on players can be moved anytime, so effectively a 5yr deal is really not a big issue.

Campese was a bust. Had one good season and then was injured for the next 3
And the Raiders website says its a 4 year deal immediately for Tapine. He had a 3 year deal for 17 onwards but joined a year earlier so its a 4 year deal not a 5 year deal.

Because anything can happen in 5 years. The guy could be a massive flop, but you are now committed to him for 5 years. He could get injured and never play the same again. You never know what will happen which is why 5 year deals are crazy and are virtually never done. It's the reason Will Zillman's deal is a running joke.

I can't break it down any further for you.

how about i break it down for you. 1 year contract for 2016 with 4yrs after that. as for being committed, ask copley, jennings and the others who have been moved early rather than seeing there contracts out.
as for injuries and the way contracts are written. if career ending, there is insurance cover and depending on the contract if so many games are missed due to injury, payment triggers may not be met.

on a side note, with the cap increases and increased cash this kid may well turn into a cheap buy once you average his contract out over 5 years in line with salary cap increases, could well be brilliant business in the long term.

You do realise this is the Raiders we're talking about, right?

Brains and Canberra should never be used in the same sentence

Surely hard to misconstrue that?

You're missing the point.

Your counter-argument has to be to find a 5 year contract where the player played brilliant football, largely injury free and saw out the 5 years.

The average NRL player's career is 43 games; so to commit to someone for potentially 150 games is a long way above average. In the past it hasn't paid off.

It isn't just financially it can cost you but also what you lose to keep players, like Thurston. He was never going to hang around while Sherwin and Anasta were sewn up long term. Maybe if the Dogs sign them to 2 year deals he hangs round but they didn't want him anyway so maybe not.

Zillman is the only one of those I named that might see out the deal.

im so confused what year have we signed him for?

There's several posts confirming that he's coming for this season on the last couple of pages mate.. Have a read.

Seriously? Less than 2 seasons?

I get that not all players make a long term go of it but that's far Iess than I'd thought.

Considering those that last that long or less are likely minimum wage, that's got to be a bitter pill to swallow. You could argue love of the game but getting busted up for two years at circa 80k then have to look for another job? Rough.
