Broncos v Manly Post Match Venting

People still talk about....some game that happened about 3 years ago too...

Oh you mean when Sims dropped the ball and cost us the game against Melbourne? Yeah that sucks but at least a player lost it and not 10minutes of arse #### ref decisions.

This is true, and again it's where I think the AFL system is fairer. Top 4 know if they lose in week 1 they get a second chance, and will play a team below them. Bottom 4 know if they lose in week 1 they're gone, and that they will keep getting harder games as they go.
All teams know from week 2 on there's no second chances.

The only difference with the AFL method I would have is venue allocations. I would keep the NRL method where if you win in week 1, you play your next game at home.

Let's just assume:

Week 1:
Melbourne lose to Tigers @ AAMI Park (on week 1 form, I think that would've been likely)
Manly lose to Brisbane @ SFS (also on week 1 form, I think that would've been likely)
Dragons def Knights @ SFS (Knights out)
Warriors def Cowboys @ North Harbour Stadium (Cowboys out - was probably a bit of a cripple fight based on week 1 form)

Week 2:
St George-Illawarra def Melbourne @ SFS (again, based on week 2 form, Dragons were superb)
Warriors def Manly @ Auckland (maybe wishful thinking)

Week 3:
Broncos def St George-Illawarra @ Lang Park
Warriors def Wests Tigers @ SFS

Week 4:
Broncos def Warriors @ ANZ Stadium

*sigh* If only.

that's a much better / clearer finals system imo .. and from memory the NRL adopted something very similar to that in 1998 when there was a top 10 (lmfao) finals cutoff ..

To me the McIntyre system - or at least the way the NRL work it - doesn't provide enough reward for the teams that finish in the top 4 .. One loss in week 1 of the finals and you're in a worse off position than potentially the 6th, 7th or 8th placed team if they happen to jag a win.

And even if you do win in week one, generally all you do is swap partners so to speak in week two but you're in sudden death ..

The ARL in 1995 adopted an 8-team finals series similar to the AFL system. However, it had a flaw in that teams 1 and 4 and 2 and 3 could meet in week 1 and week 3. It greatly limited the Grand Final possibilities - ie, teams 2 and 3 could never be in the GF, just as teams 1 and 4 couldn't.
They changed it in 1996 to be as the AFL system is now to ensure the "losers" from the top 4 end up on the opposite side of the draw from those that beat them. The only combinations in that system that can't meet in the GF are, quite logically since they eliminate eachother in week 1, 5 vs 8 and 6 vs 7.

The 1998 series was a top 10 series which was basically 2 x top 5s played over 5 weeks.

It's been 4 days.
It doesn't take 4 days to get over a regular season loss, let alone a preliminary final loss that Darren Lockyer's career hinged on decided by referees.

I hope kaz is fishing there....

No I'm not fishing.

Bet the players are over it.

The players are allowed to drink themselves silly this week & are on a month's holidays.... Of course they are.

I bet if Manly cream the Warriors on Sunday the players will be thinking "that could've been us".

I don't think we would have beaten Manly in 2008.

I think the Warriors can beat Manly & beat them quite well.

I'm over Friday's loss.

I'm not over 2008's loss or even 2002's loss. FMD we should've won those years.

the players would still be thinking that this is a title shot down the drain. We beat the Warriors by 30 only 3 weeks ago, and beat them a few weeks before that too. I think we would have had their measure in a GF too.

No team would be thinking like that ... the competition is SO even nowadays that when it gets to semi finals and beyond, every game is basically a coin toss, an 80 minute lottery .. There's so little between every team that the difference between winning a premiership and finishing fourth is basically a bounce of the ball, a ref's call, a brilliant play in the dying minutes ect.

It's not like the 90's anymore when the Brisbane teams of back then or the Canberra's ect would be a 10-point better team than everyone else in the race.

And Brisbane beating the Warriors by 30 three weeks ago wouldn't mean squat if they were facing off again on Sunday ... fortunes and form can swing at the drop of a hat in this competition - case in point being the Warriors against Brisbane in week 1 of the finals and the first half vs the Tigers as opposed to what they brought to Melbourne last saturday ..

the worst part of it all is the underlying feeling i get that the refs were intentionally (and with word from above) out to swing the game in manlys favour with those piggy back penalties.

if the refs were just GENUINELY THAT BAD at calling the game, i could cop it alot easier.

i can also cop that we werent good enough to win in the second half.

ah well.

Certainly would have been interesting if Manly lost, wouldn't it. Would have been the first all non-NSW GF ever played. Wonder how that would have gone down?

Probably about the same as the 2006 GF between the Storm and the Broncos.

They wanted a NSW team in the GF. They got their wish.

Would have been interesting to have the Storm & Manly in the GF, to see who booed Gallop more.

Oh yeah .... My brain is not working this morning lol. I thought there had been one, but couldn't remeber which year.

I still don't think the NRL would like a GF with no NSW team in it.

There's no secret they weren't overly thrilled with the build up and post-reaction to 2006. The excitement wasn't there at all in Sydney, for obvious reasons. And bear in mind the NRL really milks this week with breakfasts and other functions. Demand was down that year, even if the game still sold out (mostly by virtue of Dragons fans selling their tickets on ebay).

Yeah in fairness there would still be no tickets available for the Grand Final even with no NSW teams participating. 2006 was sort of built up to be a Bulldogs Vs Dragons Grand Final during the finals as well. Grand Final day is pretty awesome. The only time where you can actually sit at ANZ and enjoy a game is at Origin, Grand Finals or a finals match with over 60,000 people. Otherwise, meh.

Yep. GF day is great if you're going. Carnival atmosphere. Head along, see the swarms of people supporting their teams. Bite to eat and a drink, head into the game, enjoy the lower grade finals, then the hoopla of the game itself (pre-match entertainment generally is a let down...Kelly Clarkson this year, can't wait for the reaction to that lol).

Seriously if I lived in Sydney I reckon I'd go to most GFs just for the day out, regardless of who was playing.
