Broncos Vs. Cowboys - Post Match Discussion

I guess I watched a totally different game to the rest of you. [icon_shru

We won Round 1, in a scrapfest, so you have to be happy, however we all know much improvement, especially in defence, is needed.

Thaiday; Played many minutes, although in attack he was neutralised. Was solid defensively but how so many has him as MoM bewilders me.

DT; 2 good runs and a couple of big hits. Solid

Clinton; Great first round performance. MoM IMO.

Parker; As much as it pains me to say this, he played a great game and although he made a couple of errors was just behind Clinton in performance in our pack.

Wallace; Solid performance, has to improve on kicking, still working well with god. No dramas.

Locky; God. A little quiet, however it is round one, with a footy this guy could hit a 20c piece from 35 metres. Brilliant passing game.

Falou; Marked out of the game. Seemed nervous, the try will give him some confidence. Awful defence. That read was very poor.

The young 'uns; Solid and in fact all the young guys look like they will improve. Yow Yeh's acceleration is even quicker than when he was TYC. He managed to slow and step away and still beat the cover defence inside man. Even many seasoned wingers can't perform that move. Winterstein looked the goods, maybe a little defensive training. Alex Glenn had some great runs and was my standout outside back.

Hunt; Great game, however he continues to cramp his outside men for room in attacking plays.

McCullough; Didn't quite look to be handling the pace, although his dummy and run will give him confidence. This guy needs to still be on our bench and brought in late into games until he finds himself. Not the starting hooker anytime soon going on last night. Hope he proves me wrong.

Lastly Gorrell; What is it with this forum? Gorrell had a solid performance at worst. He made a few good runs from half, fed both the pack and halfback quickly and as required. I have him as 2 thumbs up.

I just want to express my dismay at people commenting favourably on the streaker. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for naked runs in mass public gatherings, however there is a time and a place; perhaps at the OTHER END OF THE FUCKING FIELD, NOT THROUGH THE FUCKING COWBOYS BACKLINE WHEN THEY ARE 40 METRES OUT, BALL IN HANDS, WITH BRONCOS DEFENCE FRANTICALLY TRYING TO MAKE IT ONSIDE AND MARK UP.

I'm not saying the streaker cost the Cowboys the game, I am saying he robbed me as a cash paying spectator, the opportunity to see the TRUE outcome of the game. Cowboys were a VERY real threat to either score in the corner (considering Bowen was up and JT was setting his backline) or even pass back inside for JT to have a shot at the fieldgoal. The streaker ruined my viewing experience of this game. Imagine if that was Origin, QLD were 1 point down and that happened to a QLD backline play!? I hope he got thrown in the watchhouse cell with some guy fresh out of SDLCC. Fuckwit.

The best run of the night came from the steaker who ran 110mters before he was tackled on the Cows try line in front of the away supporters bay.

That was an orsm line break!!! I can't believe he didn't get caught til he reached the other corner!

Thurston was so pissed about that. They had us on the ropes on the 4th tackle when he ran through NQ's backline.

What an idiot.

I don't think they had us on the ropes at all.

The streaker affored them the time to set themselves properly for a field goal attempt, albeit one from 50m out.

Yeah it also offered Brisbane the chance to set their defensive line and ready themselves for the field goal shot. I sympathise with Thurston and the Cowboys. The streaker really ran on at a crucial point of the game and it cost them.

good game Broncos, lot of things to work on before the coming weeks got some solid teams next up..Lockyer needs to work on his chip kicks for Folau

I should add it's good we got the points. We've got a glut of big games in the first half of the season at home and we need to take as many points as possible. Taylor was my MOM. I was bagging him on here a few weeks ago but he was awesome last night. Well done big man.

Our goal line defence was woeful - just about every time the Cowboys were on our line they scored. .

That was the one feature that disapointed me was our normally rock solid goal line defence looked very poorly organised, and there was often gaping holes everywhere.

I honestly think we should have won by 10 but it was this poor goal line defense and corey's kicking that led to a very nervous 1 point win... thank you Wallce!!

There were some good points to come out of it for sure but definetly some room to improve if I was Hanjak I'd spend all week on defence and perhaps look to prep a new kicker like devere perhaps?

Gorrell is no Ennis until people realise that he will always be given no credit for a decent performance.

FFS i never said he was anything like Ennis, in fact i said he was a completely different type of player.

I haven't given him much credit because IN MY OPINION he didn't warrant any. It was nothing more than an average performance from hin in my eyes.

Live with it.

Oh and was it just me or did Hunt and Taylor both show some decent arguments for a resign. Hunt was like a 2nd 5/8 in attack setting up some great raids and while Taylor didn't go great the whole time he did show in a couple patches what hes capable of, he gives me the impression that in a few years he'll be right up there however is still developing some consistency.

That is fair enough.

Regardless of the streaker though, i reckon there was only a 15% chance they would have landed a field goal from that distance.

Now that i'm awake I will offer my two cents.

I expected a rusty performance from both teams, and that is exactly what we got. No suprises there. With that in mind I was quite impressed with our performance last night. The main critisisms that I have is that our attack looked too one-off and at times it looked like an U7's team waiting behind the play the ball. The other issue was that I think in parts we were allowing too many yards up the middle and gifting them 10m. The good thing is that we shouldn't expect this to be a regular occurance because its just a matter of getting rid of all that rust.

I was very impressed with Clinton and Thaiday last night. I thought they both looked strong hitting the ball up and they were both solid in defence. That shot that Clinton put on Carl Webb was a beauty. I think Taylor was strong in patches, but after about 20 mins he looked buggered to me. Setu and Glenn had good debut performances, and Gorrell was solid without being outstanding.

In the backs I think Hunt was our best. He played a part in 3 tries and his little grubbers into the in-goal could be a serious attacking weapon as the season progresses. Yow Yeh and Winterstein had solid debuts and didn't make any mistakes. Michaels showed a bit of toe in places and looked to get on the outside of Farrar a few times. Falou was quiet by his usual standard. He let in that first try to Tonga, but tightened up in defence after that. Lockyer was rusty, everyone could see that, but Wallace did a good job backing him up.

Also, i'm not sure how accurate this is but the stats site has Joel Clinton only playing 23 minutes for the game. Surely it was more than that. I'm interested to find out what happened to Kenny.

Just give Gorrell time. Remember when Ennis played for us he wasn't that good either but after a while he turned into a star. Who knows, that may happen to Gorrell as well.

Anyway onto other things. A good way to start the season...sorta. I thought Yow Yeh and Falou in particular were good.
Ennis was actually great for us from the start, until he did his fricken knee. He's always looked the potential to be good.

Gorrell looked old and slow. I totally agree with NNN.

Oh and I compeltely 100% agree with Hammo re the Streaker. It ruined the last 2 minutes of the game which was very exciting. I am sure Thursto was never winding up for Burns to take a 50m+ kick. I'm sure they would've run it and our defence was all over the place. That streaker needs to work on his timing a bit better, at the start of the match it would've been hilarious.

Gorrell was solid, he will be very good with us once he gets a few more games under his belt.

Always good to start the year with a win. Some things that need to be worked on, but theres a good platform there to beuild on for the rest of the season. The backs did there job and Glenn was good off the bench, so the question now is who makes way for hodges? And the forwards reallly stood up last night, some were a little quiet but iverall good stuff for the first game of the season.

No mention of the under 20s guys they played a hard fought battle on the night too. Hope to see improvement in final score for 20s next week

20's started very slowly last year alswo. It takes a while for Griffin to build the combination but look for them to improve each week like last year. Keep in mind most of the team will be new to NYC as most of last year squad are playing Qld Cup if not NRL this year I believe.
