Bye Bye Bon Jovi

Do you guys do anything but complain about something the NRL does?

Instead of complaining about the music. How's about backing up your hatred with a song suggestion the NRL should consider.

I agree.

Wah wah. NRL bans shoulder charges.
Wah wah. NRL hires Bon Jovi.

Get over it.

I understand your concern twizted but rest assured I complain about plenty of other things too... I'm a very balanced whinger

Complaining about complaining... Ironic really.

Yes everyone how dare you have an opinion. Your all very naughty, no presents for you

I assume so. But it isn't just people on here who do it and that is what is so annoying. Let me whinge about whingers for a moment.

This year, it started with the NRL logo, then the shoulder charges (I complained about that one) and then back to the music (again) by kicking Bon Jovi out the door with a "F off" and a spit.

Heaven forbid we get some world wide exposure by a huge and still very popular band. It may have started off as originally an unreleased track, but we made it popular enough for them to release it and even the major American sports grabbed it.

People have also complained about almost (if not all bands or artists) that has (have) played at the Grand Final as far as I can remember.

People complain a band has been too mainstream and then some complain some are not mainstream enough.

Then it is "we need an Australian band to do it", yet we go back to the mainstream vs not mainstream argument again. Then those same people go we need a new Tina Turner, an American who probably didn't know much about the game besides we played in short shorts and again go back around the mainstream vs non mainstream argument again.

So if you want to bitch about the music, fair enough. But, put up a band or song from a band that you think will sell our game better than the ones the game has used in the last 10+ years.

You will probably find out just how hard it is at getting the right mix that will actually keep everyone or most people happy and you should probably stop judging the NRL so harshly for making that hard decision.

Excuse any mistakes as I wrote this on my phone.

wait what?

the song was written by bon jovi with the intention of it being used to rile up crowds for sports games, more specifically Jon Bon Jovis favourite sport, the NFL. it was used by the NFL before the NRL picked it up.

Ok I admit I got the information wrong there. I was going from what I had originally read back in the time of the signing of the song deal and was probably reading NRL positive spin of "we found this first", an originally unreleased Bon Jovi track for pumping crowds. Going through articles since then, I now know it was never the case (probably should have double checked that).

However, it was still a song that should have had a better impact and was a perfect fit for our game. For some reason, so many NRL fans whinged about it and I can't see why? It is no different to the songs used in branding the game before it. So was it Bon Jovi or was it "too American" a song? If ACDC had actually sung the song, would it have been accepted a bit more?

I also found all the songs (or most of them) the NRL has used as branding for the NRL.

Boys Are Back In Town - Thin Lizzy - mid-1980s
What You Get Is What You See - Tina Turner - 1989
Simply The Best - Tina Turner - 1990-95
No theme song - 1996
Two Tribes go To War - Frankie Goes To Hollywood - 1997 Super League
It's My Game - NSWRL's own theme song - 1997
Tubthumping (I get knocked down! But I get up again) Chumbawamba - 1998
Blow That Whistle, Ref'' - Thomas Keneally 1999
What A Game - Tom Jones 2000
No theme song - just racing car noises to with player action- 2001
No TV advertising campaign - 2002
That's My Team - Hoodoo Gurus 2003-07
Centenary of League Campaign - 2008
Feels Like Woah - Wes Carr 2009
Fan voices (no theme song campaign) - 2010
This Is Our House - Bon Jovi - 2011

i just think the "this is our house" song sucks, plain and simple. sounds like what it is - a cheesy, b-side 80s song. its a slow, plodding, old sounding song. the nrl isnt slow and boring like that. it needs a faster song IMO. thats the thing that separates rugby league from other ball sports, its speed.

i want the NRL to get away from its "stuck in the 80s" theme across the board. every single half time/pre game entertainment, ad, guest on tv shows is just some former star that isnt relevant anymore and hasnt been for years, and that noone actually cares about.

i actually liked the use of "social currency" by children collide, but i think that was channel 9 rather than the NRL?

+1. Everyone here is such whingers about everything NRL related. Some optimism wouldn't go astray!
Ok not "everyone" but too many :thumbup1:

I didn't mind the Bon Jovi song. I thought the campaign was neat, portraying the stadium as this big carnival and showcasing the players feats as daring larger than life circus tricks gave the game some nice glitz and glamour. The problem was, the song wasn't a great fit for Rugby League as it seems to be based around tribalism, which is huge in the NFL but you can't say the same for the NRL. If anything, the song would have been a better fit for the AFL, which is probably why so many League fans are so passionately against it.

For mine, it's in the middle of the road in terms of campaign songs. It's still no where near as bad as others (1999, 2000 come to mind) or uninspired (2009...yeck) were.

Picking a suitable song is certainly tougher than it looks. AP brought up Children Collide, and I dig their music, but I remember their pre-Origin 09 routine and how it really didn't fit the occasion and how many people thought they sucked.

I suggest Three Blind Mice for the 2 refs & video ref when they stuff up again.

See the thing that's stupid about whinging about the promo campaign is that it's not intended to attract people who are already fans. Nor is it aimed at people who are musical snobs who have a problem with the 80s.

I hope they pick a good Aussie band/song for the campaign but regardless who they choose I reckon most of the people who hated Bon Jovi, Wes Carr, Hoodoo Gurus will hate it anyway.

To put a song I would like to see is Five Finger Death Punch - Back For More.

I admit not everyone is going to like that. It is probably too fast and hard for the casual fans and kids who grew up with more mainstream hip hop and dance. The lyrics though IMO explains everything our game is about - the toughness.

In regarding NSW based clubs....it's all about tribalism. It's one of their many defiant arguments after SOO rolls around and they say they don't care

because they've just lost another series,

like the 7th in a row for example. :001_tt2:

I hated the Bon Jovi song simply because I hate Bon Jovi. I have no other reason.......

What I would like to see is an Australian band come up with something.......it's the NRL after all, NOT the NFL etc etc (yes....I know about the Kiwis in the NRL but stiff shit)

It's got to appeal to a variety of age groups and social dynamic. I can't see everyone liking the death metal overtones Twiz.

Hell Bells by AkaDaka is the closest I can come up with.......the tolling of the bells and the build up to the opening when the drums kick in. It's all about adrenalin and excitement. That said...something new would probably even better,

surely there's an Aussie band out there who could come up with something......kind hard and fast, but also mainstream?

it should be trying to attract people other than just those who like ageing obsolete 80s bands though.

Surely a reworded version of Cotton Eye Joe is what's needed.

Seeing as no one knows the words to Cotton Eye Joe it could work well
