PROMISING Broncos utility Corey Oates was expected to be standing alongside Ben Hunt as a key retention for the club when the halfback announced last week he was staying at the club.

But we have heard Oates, thought to be across the line, is not the lay-down certainty to remain at Red Hill that most people thought.

Oates has been shocked by the amount of money rival clubs are offering him, and is now seriously considering walking out when his contract ends at the end of next year.

A country kid from central Queensland, Oates will have to sacrifice serious cash to stay at Red Hill.

While Hunt was always going to stay in Brisbane, Oates is a genuine chance of leaving.

Re: [Rumour] Corey Oates ---> Elsewhere

Please God no.

Re: [Rumour] Corey Oates ---> Elsewhere

I would be pissed if we lost him.

We cannot afford to get into a bidding war over him, but Oates has potential to be a franchise player for the club and I believe he has a huge future in front of him.

I doubt this will be as controversial on here as it would be to a casual Broncos supporter, but I'd much rather Corey Oates than Sam Thaiday in the grand scheme of things.

The question is how much is too much for Oates?

Re: [Rumour] Corey Oates ---> Elsewhere

It would be a real shame to lose the kid ... but we should be paying what is reasonable for a player at his stage of development not get into a bidding war and pay massive overs therefore risk losing essential players (which at this stage Oates is not one) because we no longer have the cap space available.

Totally agree with this

Get rid of Thaiday and/or Glenn. Both off contract next year.

Re: [Rumour] Corey Oates ---> Elsewhere

I'd prefer Oates to Glenn if it came to a decision.

Oates is going to be a great hard running back rower, or even a dynamic centre.

^^^ THIS

Oates is the future......Glenn is the past.

I'd prefer Thaiday to Glenn

Re: [Rumour] Corey Oates ---> Elsewhere

Hopefully just the player manager fishing for more cash. Offer him the last year of the deal at a price that is indicative of how good we hope he'll be, but put the option for that year in the club's favour. "Now go out there and earn it".

Re: [Rumour] Corey Oates ---> Elsewhere

GET.IT.DONE.BRONCOS.

I agree with Foordy in that if he gets dazzled by ridiculous dollars from down south then Brisbane shouldn't get into a bidding war and pay him way above what he's currently worth. That would be setting the place up for salary cap pain down the track.. This is more a case of the Broncos club & brand flexing its muscle at Oates and convincing him that the promised land for him to maximise his potential as a player is here in Brisbane, as it was for former players a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h .....ect.

Look at what Michael Maguire is already planning re Sam Burgress, this is where Brisbane needs to be in terms of that fiesty, proactive leadership the club was renowned for through the 90s.

Re: [Rumour] Corey Oates ---> Elsewhere

Who are the clubs offer Huge $$. anyone know?

Re: [Rumour] Corey Oates ---> Elsewhere

Offer him whatever Thaiday is on, then don't re-sign Thaiday when it comes to it, he's a couple of years past his prime, maybe more, Oates is a couple of years away from his.

Re: [Rumour] Corey Oates ---> Elsewhere

I think some people are getting carried away a little bit about Oates.

Yes he has potential but that is all at the moment. He hasnt earned the right to command ridiculous amounts of money and the Broncos shouldnt offer him that type of money just because some shitty club has.

I strongly believe that with Bennent at the helm along with a few good signings headlined by Milford the Broncos will become a force in the next two or three years. Oates should be thinking about the potential to win premierships and play at the worlds best stadium every second week infront of 40,000 + fans every game.

If he wants the money let him go. There is four or five other kids out there ready to take his place who would kill to have a broncos contract.......

Re: [Rumour] Corey Oates ---> Elsewhere

I'd give him what he wants if it meant letting go one of our other overrated second rowers when they come off contract.

Re: [Rumour] Corey Oates ---> Elsewhere

Wow, I am amazed no one said it yet...
