Dean youg calls Farah a ''f---ing wog.''

Might as well pick on someone for having cancer, if you pick on them for having depression. It's an illness.

Picking on someone for being fat, blonde, ranga, wog, pom, kiwi...whatever, it's not a "bad" thing so why take offence to it?

It's like people get offended having their race pointed out to them because THEY feel negatively about it. That's their hang up.

Some insults are worse than others. Calling you a f'ing wog is not pointing your race to you, it's insulting it and it's racism!
It might no be a big deal to you, but it is for a large amount of people, especially minorities.

Likewise, there might be forms of insult out there that will incense you and may not be worth mentioning for others.

Fact is, racial slur is unacceptable and unlike many other nonsense in our current soft, nanny society, this is one thing I do feel strongly about.
In sports, it is equivalent to king hitting someone, and should be punished in the same way IMO.

I'm not personally offended by what Young said, but he shouldn't have said it. No-one here should be surprised that people on this board are defending Young. There's a lot of "casual racism" here, far beyond the joking level.

I agree with this. Seems to get overlooked as well.

Coxy, I reckon if you have been racially abused before you would know what it feels like.
It's not nice to be called shit like that, especially by people who should know better.

It's not as bad as it used to be calling someone a fucking wog but that's not the point. Young knew full well what he was trying to achieve by calling Farah a fking wog and it was to be a racist dick, that's what makes it frustrating.
When people who have an influence in the community make racial insults, it's very disappointing. He and other NRL players should be making a stand against it, not using racist remarks themselves, especially in such a multicultural game like the NRL.

No, he was pissed off at Farah and wanted to show he was pissed off, and hopefully piss Farah off too.

It'd be no different than calling someone a "fucking fatso" or something if they're sensitive about their weight.
Or a "fucking ranga" if they're sensitive about their hair colour.

That's the point. People get too hung up on the "racial" side of it - whether it's racial or not, someone trying to say something to upset you is just low.

But until you can be suspended for calling someone a "fucking fatso" you shouldn't be able to be suspended for calling someone a "fucking wog".

No there's a big difference. If I called someone a stupid aussie redneck, or a fat redneck, or a stupid nigger V stupid fatso, what do you think would put more people offside?

That's my point exactly. It shouldn't be anymore valid to call someone a "stupid aussie redneck" a "fat redneck" a "stupid fatso" or anything else, than it is to call someone a nigger/wog/towelhead/curry/coconut/abo/whatever.

The issue SHOULD be about insulting people, belittling them for whatever their point of difference is...what that point of difference is should be IRRELEVANT.

Should be, maybe it is in Fantasy Island v2.4 but not in real life and it's not going to change either. People will always take exception to being insulted about their race.

Either way regardless I think Young should cop some punishment, even if just a fine(banning him from a GF would be extreme and the NRL wouldn't have the balls anyway).

I don't get offended when I get called a white ****? My race is anglo-saxon and white **** is a derogatory term for an anglo, but I don't care??

There's a difference, I don't remember whites being abused in the past for being whites... Majorities rarely, if ever get offended, it's like teasing someone who is normal body weight V someone who is abnormal body weight, majorities usually won't get offended.... It's Australia white is the majority.

Anyway I can't beleive this thread has turned into a racism is ok debate. If this was Young calling Petero a black **** I'm sure a few people here would be singing a completely different tune.

In Australia most people are over weight though? They still get offended when you call them fat.

In Australia most people are over weight though? They still get offended when you call them fat.
I am speaking minorities V majorities here, obese/anorexic Vs everyone else, etc.
Minorities are always going to be more sensitive to insulting remarks.

That's right, you stupid skinny!

I know I'm "out of touch" with society but IMO an insult using a slang term is not racism, unless it is by definition discriminating unfairly against someone.

For example, if I was interviewing someone for a job and said to a colleague "their qualifications are great, but they're a wog, I'm not hiring them", that's racism.
Of I always gave a better performance review to staff who aren't "ethnic", that's racism.

To me it's not about minority, majority, black, white, whatever. It's about someone in a position of power exercising that power unfairly over someone because of whatever it may be - race, religion, weight, looks, height, number of fingers, whatever.

That's my problem with the hysteria about racism whenever anyone uses a slang term.

In this context, it's absolutely meaningless. Young has no position of power with Farah and so nothing more need be said.

This is different to the case of Andrew Johns earlier in the year because he was in the position of Assistant Coach and by calling Greg Inglis a black c*** he was implying to the indigenous players in his own team that he had a lack of respect for them. They would ask the question "does he not select me/praise me/does he pick on me because of my colour?"

When it's your peers you should deal with it yourselves. In this case, Farah should've (ideally after the game when tempers were settled) "Hey Dean, that wasn't cool what you said" and Young should've just said "Sorry mate"...done, dusted.

Minorities are always going to be more sensitive to insulting remarks.

But 60% of Australian's are over-weight, therefore people who aren't over-weight are in the minority....
So are 60% of Australians obese?

Put it another way. If it was illegal or sackworthy everytime you offend someone, we'd have 100% unemployment and overcrowded jails.
