THE Parramatta Eels will be docked 12 points, with the NRL to announce the club’s salary cap penalty at a press conference at 11.30am (AEST) this morning. The NRL investigation has uncovered the Eels are over the salary cap due to third party deals this season.
This means the Eels must shed players in the next nine days to be eligible to play for points by their next clash with South Sydney in round 10.
The NRL penalty will force the club to shed players in an immediate fire sale.
Parramatta are also expected to be fined $1 million and five staff members will reportedly fall on their sword, including chairman Steve Sharp.
NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg phoned the club this morning to address the players with news of the penalty.
The decision gives them a glimmer of hope of playing finals, with 15 games remaining plus two byes.
If the Eels were to win every game remaining this season they would finish on 34 points, which would likely put them six points above the cut off for making the top eight.
Greenberg and the head of the game’s integrity unit Nick Weeks will address the media on a number of alleged breaches around Parramatta’s third-party deals.
