POST GAME Finals Week 1 - Roosters vs Broncos

A couple of starting front rowers who can consistently punch out 100 metres plus would be a big help.

What do you make of the attacking structure, Pete? You think the premiership can be won with ad hoc footy? I feel like in high pressure games it'll more than likely lead to errors.

A good example was the switch across the back of the ruck on the 5th . Meant to catch the FB out of position . Instead the ball is passed to moga who tips it on to Oates who is front of him expecting a grubber ...

The Broncos have good formations, it's the execution that's often lacking. Either the ball goes to the wrong set of hands or a player goes off-script and makes themselves easy pickings for the defence. Skills often let them down as well, with passes either missing the mark or not being good enough to create opportunities.

Demetriou isn't a slouch and I expect now that he knows what he's working with we'll see the attack evolve.

I think we have to make one player (milf) next season as the go-to player for coordination of sets. One bloke who knows what is required, and carries through. Last night it was marshal, the game before hunt tried to do it after Boyd went down. Our team needs a leader, for finishing sets atleast, if not general play. Boyd organises defence from fullback, but Boyd can't do the attack. He doesn't touch it on the last tackle unless something is dire. Its not that he is incapable. Boyd could do it. Just not at fullback.
Milf though has the nous, and respect of the players, just not the self confidence. He will make mistakes and must be allowed to do so (its how you learn). Ultimately, like the shy 18 year old langer, he will find his way, if only we let him.

Does anyone think Wayno is getting touch much into the tactical side of things? I mean the mind games etc with swapping players at the last minute. Poor bugger trains hard all week to be told on game day that he's coming of the bench.

Can Bennett not just name a side and stick with it?

He shits the bed that a player might shit the bed.

You're assuming it was changed at the last minute.

Mead played alright at fb, he wasn't the issue imo. Our props got dominated in defence and made their usual shit all meters, that was the problem. I can't wait to get some size and aggro upfront next year.

Edit: I would have preferred Isaako coming straight in for Boyd, but I can understand why Wayne didn't do it

From all reports it was.

@Battler, you're right. Mead did play ok but what does it do to Kodi's confidence to be dropped at the last minute. Basically the coach doesn't have 100% faith in him to do the job for 80. Not good really.

Also with the props 100% agree. They got pumped through the middle and didn't really get any roll on for the halves.

Hopefully next week it's pick and stick.

I've got a bit of an issue with Wayne leaving Kodi on the bench for the first 20 to take a bit of pressure off him. In my opinion he's handled all the pressure he's been put under so far and nothing suggests he wouldn't have handled it Friday. He was thrown into the fullback role earlier in the year and handled it, he was thrown into the halfback role straight out of intrust cup and handled it earlier in the year. To me he's never been close to cracking under the pressure.

While I'm talking about putting faith in younger guys I'd like to see more faith put in our young forwards. Just like Kodi I feel as though Herman and joe have done everything asked of them so far and I'd like to see one of them undertake the bigger rotation of playing the first 20 minutes and the last 30. Particularly when you have someone like Blair who is a touch off his game at the moment I'd love to see one of the experienced guys come off the bench first interchange and let one of the young young guys prove they've got what it takes.

Exactly. Kodi isn't a newbie to first grade either, he's been around for almost 3 seasons? I could understand putting kahu there but mead is a player way out of form although he went alright in his 20 min stint. But yeah, if kodi trained there all week bloody stick with him. I'm sure the rest of the team were mentally expecting to hear his voice at the back too.

I feel like Wayne needs to do another position move in the off season that's nearly as significant as the locky one. Boyd needs to move to left centre. The position is vacant and Boyd is at the perfect stage of his career to move there. His speed and now his hammy's can not withstand the demands of fullback like hodges towards the end. This will allow jack bird to play fullback and get him more involved. Then all that is required is drilling a variety of set plays to unleash our centres and fullback. When situations ask for ad hoc plays we're already ready for that as well.

Not really the thread but who cares, next year for round 1, I'd seriously be going with:

1. Roberts
2. Oates
3. Bird
4. Boyd
5. Kahu
6. Milf
7. KNik
8. Joffa
9. Thaiday (Remember, Macca will most likely be a few weeks out)
10. McGuire
11. Glenn
12. Gillett
13. TPJ

14. JNik (with question marks on how long Macca is out, I actually think we NEED to sign JNik)
15. Fai
16. Lodge
17. Su'a

18. Allan (He'll get his chance, particularly if Roberts doesn't work out at FB)

I was thinking of maybe putting Bird at fullback and Boyd in the centres. Roberts is fast, but Bird is a better ball player than Roberts and definitely a stronger runner than Boyd.

Imagine Roberts in broken field play from the back, plus he has a beautiful pass on him.
