I would have liked to see him run it a bit more towards the end there, he's usually good for a try close to the line.

I would have loved to have seen him score a try in his farewell, and I thought he had a couple of good chances there if he just took them.

But apart from that, I was very happy with his performance. MOTM for mine. You could tell he desperately wanted a win in his final game as a Bronco at Suncorp, he was playing like a man possessed. The reaction from him when RCG made that error and at full time, he was fired up.

While I was quick to bring up the 50/50s that went the Broncos way, that not played at by Peter Wallace was interesting. In the Under 20s a similar play happened where the defender was deemed to have actually played at the ball and it led directly to first points against the run of play.

I see a lot of fans blowing up the referees favouring Brisbane on social media, but there's no doubt Penrith received their fair share.

Wallace had a nap on us every time he made a tackle. It's never really about penalties that are given, it's mostly about the penalties that aren't. Reffing is too random to even know what they're thinking out there.

He's a good kicker when he doesn't have to do the fifth tackle go nowhere bombs. Those kicks just had an awful shape - he gets a better angle from hooker.

I take your point but disagree. Part of what makes the game popular is that it is a bit gladiatorial. And the players make an above average income because of that popularity. Playing on in the situation we saw tonight is all part of the players accepting the risks of rugby league, taking the money and giving the fans value for money. Player welfare should not be paramount but definitely a consideration. And the game does make it a consideration by generally stopping play for KOs when the play is over.

Once you do what Sutton did tonight - blow time off in the middle of the play when the Panthers were running away to score - you start watering down the product and risk its popularity.

What the ****, and I really mean what the flying **** is this? Especially that bold part?

Unlike what that idiot Gasnier said about putting the onus on refs to make medical decisions, the onus is on them to ensure actual medical professionals make those decisions, but they MUST safeguard the players welfare first and foremost!

Most times, the game continues because it is away from the player injured and there isn't actual danger of increasing the damage done.
In this case, it was a head first violent collision, where the player fell without control and was laying face down on the field. The refs responsibility is absolutely first to the player's welfare, as we could be talking about a life threatening injury, where seconds count!

Imagine Oates stops breathing while almost everyone else is continuing the play, because the ref shouldn't interfere with the advantage and possible try for the opposition's team... yeah, that would go down really well for the game's popularity, even if the player survived the ordeal without nefarious consequences.

Brisbane staged a stunning form reversal after their preliminary semi-final loss to Penrith to outplay a confident Manly team 12-4 in the knockout semi-final.

Manly were installed as favourites to win the match after their gritty defeat of Balmain, and the Broncos indifferent form against Penrith a week earlier.

But from the outset, Brisbane showed a tonne of character to overturn their previous disappointment.

And they were forced to overcome the loss of star players Dale Shearer and Greg Dowling, who withdrew, injured, in the lead-up to the match.

After his nightmare against Brad Izzard, five-eighth Kevin Walters responded like a champion, leading the charge against the Sea Eagles with his twin brother Kerrod.

He gave Brisbane a dream start when he backed up a dummy half break by Kerrod to score after just 12 minutes of play. And they could have skipped even further ahead when Peter Jackson was ruled offside from a Kevin Walters grubber kick soon after.

The Broncos' defence had an urgency about it whih cut cown Manly's attacking plays every time they approached their quarter. Test half Allan Langer finished the day with 30 tackles.

Brisbane led 6-2 at halftime after Terry Matterson (Brisbane) and Matthew Ridge (Manly) had added penalty goals and Manly were still well in contention when Ridge landed his second penalty for 4-6 after 55 minutes to play.

He could have leveled in the 71st minute but an angled penalty attempt swung wide.

Both sides had their chances to take the match as time ran out, but it was the Broncos who stole the initiative with just two minutes to play.

Peter Jackson, one of Brisbane's best, accepted a neat pass from Terry Matterson to put the issue beyond doubt.

Manly half Geoff Toovey lost no admirers with a gutsy display after being heavily concussed in the first half, but he was one of few Manly players to shine.

Gutsy Broncos outlast Panthers

The Brisbane Broncos have put together a courageous defensive effort to beat the Penrith Panthers 13-6 at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, finishing the match with just one fit player on the bench.

The battered Broncos goal-line defence repelled raid after raid from the Panthers at different stages of the night, with Wayne Bennett's men showing no self-preservation.

Sam Thaiday, Corey Oates and Jai Arrow all failed to finish the game injured, but their teammates just kept turning up.

This effort and determination in defence is what would please coach Wayne Bennett the most after he was left disappointed with their previous efforts against the Sydney Roosters one week earlier.

There was only one try scored in the first 40 minutes and it was the result of a superb ball from hooker Ben Hunt who put Oates through a gaping hole. Brisbane's hulking winger put his foot down and did not look back, running 55 metres to score in the left corner. Jordan Kahu couldn't convert from the sideline, leaving the Broncos' lead at four points after seven minutes.

Kahu extended Brisbane's lead to six in the 14th minute, slotting a penalty goal from right in front of the uprights.

The Broncos continued their dominant start to the match in the 16th minute, with second-row forward Alex Glenn breaking through Penrith's line before passing to Oates who knocked on just as Brisbane's attack looked as if it could produce more points.

A positive start to the match was soon soured when Oates suffered a sickening head injury, colliding with teammate Anthony Milford at full pace in the 21st minute. The friendly fire left Oates knocked out cold and stretchered off in worrying scenes that silenced the Suncorp Stadium crowd.

The injuries continued in the dying minutes of the half, with Penrith five-eighth Tyrone May coming off the field with a knee complaint.

It remained 6-0 as the half-time hooter sounded and the Panthers knew they would need to score first in the second half to stay in the match.

Instead Penrith came out of the sheds flat and the Broncos made them pay through James Roberts, who scored off a 40-metre run in the 47th minute. He put the ball down under the posts and Kahu kicked truly to give Brisbane a 12-0 lead.

The Panthers' season was now on life support but its heart started to beat when Reagan Campbell-Gillard scored under the posts in the 64th minute. Nathan Cleary converted over the black dot to cut the Broncos' lead to six.

Thaiday then joined the injured cavalry in the 68th minute, knocking himself out while trying to make a tackle on Josh Mansour.

Brisbane steadied soon after Thaiday's injury, with Kahu taking it upon himself to extend the Broncos' lead to seven in the 71st minute with a field goal.

It was a tense last nine minutes but Brisbane held on, booking a spot in the preliminary finals where they will meet the Storm in Melbourne.
