POST GAME Game II Discussion Thread

I’ll save you the suspense. Bennett will pick Holmes at fullback next week.
Given our roster, there isn't much choice is there, apart from Allan. In any case, I hope Holmes lifts his game and plays a lot more up front than last night. I think Munster's loss made that difficult. Holmes combining with Munster would be a great start

Ahhhhh State of Origin 2020 - Game 2 - a shining beacon highlighting everything that is wrong with the game now.

Dummy half run after dummy half run, followed by an avalanche of set restarts until the defensive team cracks.

Lets do away with playing the ball with the foot, or facing the goal line or getting to our feet before playing the ball, those things aren't important, we teach those skills to 6 year olds but top level nope.................... the NRL are so obsessed with this illusion that a fast game is a good game.

Its friggin touch football! The next rule change will be you can't get tackled as the dummy half followed by ditching of scrums.

I HATE how the game is now and what it has become.......................I stopped watching after 20 minutes........something I've never done during an origin game before.
Been banging on about this for a while now .
At some point in the last 50 years I've been playing ,coaching, managing and the last 20 a fan .
The game annoys me more than makes me happy now .
Sadly, I can see a day when I just stop watching.

Something had to be done about the game though. Was becoming an over the top wrestle thon. Lots of slow play the balls. Penalties that stopped the game for each infringement.

Here's hoping the FIFO rules are kept in place for the decider.

I believe qld were required to fly in and fly out on the same day last night??

I recall it being shut down by the state governments at some point but cant remember if that was for game 1 or game 1 & 2.

If they did have to FIFO on the same day I think that would have a massive bearing on a game like origin where intensity is through the roof and travelling teams have generally been below the home team in that regard.

I'm guessing NSW will make a plea to the QLD government in order to avoid FIFO stating that lower cases should relax the border restrictions, but I hope they stay strong and maintain the bubble requirements, because that in itself could prove a massive advantage to us for the decider.

Also expect NSWRL media to be lobbying hard, stating shit like "for the integrity of the game", "it's an origin decider", etc. etc. you know the same kind of shit they bring up when someone faces the judiciary in the week leading up

My point all along on this subject has been the rules were always there. The refs refusing to rule on them has led to changes. Even the wrestle , I believe, was bought in because of the inability of the refs to enforce already existing rules.
Get to your feet, play the ball with your foot, dont move off the mark, markers stand square and not crowd the ruck.
All these things lead to an acceptable play the ball speed.

Holmes is no plodder. Look at how many tries he scored in 2018, mostly playing fullback. 22 tries in 26 games.

His problem this year is he hasn’t played enough. Last night was his 13th game this year.

He has only ever been good at FB for a short purple patch with the Sharks. Outside of that, including this year, he's looked like crap in the position.

Noone's looking fast next to JAC. Especially with the space he was given. Just my opinion still think he should be dropped but I'd wager our replacements aren't going to be any better.
He was slow compared to Capewell, not JAC. It was ugly mate.

Without Brimson and Ponga available at Fullback we just don't have enough spark in attack around the ruck or in second phase play to then also run with Jake Friend at Dummy Half.

We simply have to make room for Harry Grant. He may not be enough on his own, but if we don't find a way to put their defence under pressure at any stage then we're simply not going to be able to defend well enough either to actually beat them.

Early mail from Badel -

Grant, Welch, Brenko IN
Hunt, Fotuaika, Sami OUT

Last bench spot likely between Lui/Carrigan/Kerr

I'll start by saying Sami was absolutely horrible but it does annoy me that I am yet to see a pass to him from Capewell. There was at least a few times where Capewell got on the outside shoulder of his man and then it goes no further. The first time he tried the pass (very late game) he knocked it on. Fark hope Sami learns from that game though.
I wouldn't pass it to him either tbf

If Kerr gets picked b4 carrigan Wayne obviously had a run in with carrigan at the Broncos. He was held back by him at the Broncos too, was ready well before his debut correct wolfie?

Bennett actually wanted to give him his debut but due to development player restrictions, he couldn't find a way to get him into the team.

Carrigan mentioned it in that interview he gave with Riki on that YouTube show.

Hunt is a million miles from our biggest problem. He's a bog average Half but he's a near perfect Bench Utility option and it makes no sense to drop him to retain both Friend and Grant.

Brenko in and Sami out would suggest a Centre is getting moved, so that would be interesting to see which way they went.

Hunt was dog shit in game 2, he was involved in the first 3 NSW tries due to defensive mistakes, offered nothing in attack either. Grant provides so much more out of dummy half and is a vastly superior defender.

The mail is Brenko to right centre and Gagai to the left wing OR Holmes to the left wing, Gagai to the right wing, Brenko to right centre and Allan to fullback.

If Hunt is dropped, that's a bad call.

Hunt didn't train at all in the halves, he's had no preparation there whatsoever so he hasn't had a chance to gel with the team. He's been preparing as a utility and he did a really good job playing that roving role in Game 1 which took pressure off our spine.

Its amazing how some fans of teams when they are losing blame the game going to shit for their lack of interest or care factor.

It is natural that when your team goes to shit you care less, otherwise you will become catatonic.

But imo the game is way better now then in 2015.

That just seems like a much more balanced backline. Coates was cooked aside from that highlight reel put down, the other aspects to his game are not developed enough.

I'd have Grant at Dummy Half, I said that all along. I'd play Hunt off the Bench as my Utility because as I said, he's a plodder in the Halves which is where he played last night.
