AFTER fewer than two seasons in the top job, Anthony Griffin has emerged as rugby league's new supercoach with his early career record outstripping that of masters such as Wayne Bennett, Tim Sheens and Brian Smith.

The Courier-Mail has unearthed startling statistics which reveal how the Broncos coach has been far more successful in the formative stages of his career than some of the greatest coaches the game has seen.

After 35 games in charge since taking over from a sacked Ivan Henjak before last season, Griffin has enjoyed 27 wins which is a remarkable winning strike rate of 77.1 percent for a team which wasn't widely tipped to surge up the ladder.

At the same 35-game mark after starting his coaching career at the Canberra Raiders in 1987, mastercoach Bennett had 23 wins for a lesser success rate of 65.7 per cent.

Old masters Sheens (54.3 per cent), Smith (40 per cent) and current day coaching gurus Craig Bellamy (57.1 per cent) and Des Hasler (40 percent) also had inferior strike rates at the same early stage of their careers.

i'm very happy Griffin is our coach. IMO he has the ability to be a long term and successful coach for us.

Re: Griffin emerges as new supercoach

Nice stats, but also have to look at the respective teams when those coaches had their starts.

Bennett at Canberra in 1987 - first year they really became a force, and then Brisbane in 1988, their debut year.
Sheens at Penrith in 1984-85 - fairly ordinary team at the time
Brian Smith at Illawarra in 1984-85 - had only been in the comp a couple of years and were still easybeats of the competition
Craig Bellamy at Melbourne in 2003-04 - just the start of the likes of Slater, Smith etc taking over from Mark Murray who sent them backwards in 2001-02
Des Hasler - Manly 2004-05 were still a very raw, average team

That's not degrading what Griffin's achieved. He took on a team with a mixture of raw youngsters and superstars like Lockyer, Thaiday and Hodges and turned around the rot that set in under Henjak in 2010. Of the comparisons, I think Melbourne is probably the best, because similarly they had some experienced players and some upcoming superstars in 2003, and that was the start of their finals run after missing out the previous 2 years.

I'm sure Hook, if he saw this article, just laughed it off.

haha yeah, thats immediately what I thought....thats why he's the man.

Re: Griffin emerges as new supercoach

We havn't beaten any real contenders yet and the strongest sides we have beaten are Souths and St George Illawarra. Agree Coxy if Hook read this he would've ignored it completley. He is a terrific coach and one of the best coaches in the game today (in my opinion).

Re: Griffin emerges as new supercoach

He's great coach and has proved in the first half of this season that it wasn't a fluke last year.

His management of Corey Norman over the past 2 years has been very professional. The Manly and Storm games will be incredibly revealing for Broncos fans.

The Origin period will also be a big test of Griffin's resting policy.

Re: Griffin emerges as new supercoach

i would call the Dragons contenders

Re: Griffin emerges as new supercoach

This article reminds me of when Jim prematurely ejaculates on American Pie. Gone off way to early.

He is certainly starting off on the right note, but whilst he has made many decisions which are impressive, the truth is the man has won nothing and achieved virtually nothing in the game so far. And I'm sure he would agree.

On a positive note, it's nice to at least a complimentary article about the Broncos instead of just a blinded negative dribble.

Re: Griffin emerges as new supercoach

At least Hook doesn't sit in the box eating a hotdog or cheering his team. Like Freddy did.

Re: Griffin emerges as new supercoach

People will say look at the team he's got to work with but they conveniently ignore that he coached the younger players to a NYC GF in 2008, and a similar first grade team under Henjak failed.

Re: Griffin emerges as new supercoach

There are 2 things I particularly like about Griffin: building combinations, and adapting well to challenges, and it shows.

The team is successful largely because it is playing as a team, a unit, especially in defence.

The way this team plays actually reminds somewhat of the Storm, and the reason for its success: disciplined, organised and playing for each other.

He's a great coach.

Re: Griffin emerges as new supercoach

Way too early to tell if he's going to be a "super coach" like AP. Time will tell.

Gotta love the massive Broncos wank fest in Brisbane media lately. They're just that good.

Re: Griffin emerges as new supercoach

This is much the same as the Gallen article that Broncoman posted. It's waaaaaay too early to be bestowing a title like Supercoach on Hook. He's been great so far; let's see what his record is like in ten years' time.

Re: Griffin emerges as new supercoach

I'd like to see him coach some better attack into our side. Big ticks for winning and the defence which all good sides have but really the attack is largely coming out of dummy half or one pass hit ups. This, IMO, won't win you a GF.

Re: Griffin emerges as new supercoach

Too early to tell. So far so good but we could still fall apart this year(heaven forbid).

Re: Griffin emerges as new supercoach

Looks like Ben Dories is a broncoshq lurker - Griffin's coaching record to this point was mentioned by someone *cough cough* in the titans post game thread - not the first time a story of his has stemmed from a topic posted / discussed on this forum ..

The thing I've enjoyed most about the Broncos under Griffin's tenure is the team's consistency of effort and performance .. The old "get flogged one week, bounce back the next week, then fail to turn up the week after that" is pretty common characteristic among a lot of sides in the NRL nowadays .. This current Brisbane side has become one of the select couple of teams that doesn't fall into that pattern - and that's all on the coach imo.

Griffin has the team turning up hungry and playing with maximum effort every week .. Even those great brisbane teams under wayne bennett used to go through motions and drop games they shouldn't at times, so for brisbane supporters who's been there since day one, what we're seeing now is a bit unique.

It's interesting that some folks here are suggesting the broncos still haven’t really beaten anyone of note and proven themselves as a top-of-the-pile premiership contender .. Well, it's funny how expectations have changed isn't it? Eighteen months ago I doubt many here were using the same yardsticks as they are now. Even before a ball was kicked this season it was all about simply being competitve without Lockyer .. Eight weeks in we're suddenly wanting to know whether we're better than Melbourne and Manly.

Winning premierships nowadays has such a small margin for error .. You can be great all year, be up by 10 points in the preliminary final with 10 mins left and a couple of bad bounces or crossfield bombs later your season can be over - so it's really pointless declaring any team's likely fortunes in a comp that's so amazingly close. But if your team is "turning up" 9 times out of 10 and playing at or near it's potential, then the footy season is going to be a pretty damn enjoyable one to watch - and that's what we as broncos supporters have at the moment.

* having said all that, I've probably now laid the verbal groundwork for shocker on saturday night :cuckoo:

It happens every day. The CM is the Broncos newsletter (almost).
