NEWS Haas gets pay bump, long term deal in holding pattern

News LTD is reporting the Broncos board will formally approve a 3 year extension to Payne Haas' existing contract to tie him up for another 6 years. Money not mentioned, but there is talk of grooming him for future captaincy. The deal appears to be done, but won't be formally announced until after the season. It will be the longest contract in the Broncos' 33 year history.

Payne is contracted to us for 3 more seasons at $500k. Let's say he could get $1.2M on the market right now, which would break any club, but some club might be willing. In his head he's thinking he's a $1.2M player who's only on $500k. That has to niggle at him.

Now let's say his manager goes to the club and asks for 1M a year. Payne is still thinking he's a $1.2M player who's not getting enough. But his manager explains that he's getting $1.5M more for the next three years if he accepts it. But, Payne thinks, they're still underpaying him what another club could pay. The club are *****. His manager is a ****. And so it goes on.

For SBW to come out and say Payne should be earning 1.2m right now because Fifita is, is laughable.
Milford has been on $1mill for how many years now, and probably been the highest paid 6 in the game. Whilst pretty much every other 6 in the NRL has been playing at a higher level then him week in, week out, I never read an article saying this 6 at this club should be earning a mill because look at Milford, he is. Same goes for Ash Taylor.
Why aren‘t these articles being written about other top teir players in the NRL?

Fact is Payne is here until at least the end of 2024.
Brisbane have quiet sometime to sort this out with Payne however, the longer Payne leaves it, means the longer Payne has to wait to get his pay raise - which I 100% believe he is entitled to.

I don’t know what you pay the kid but I think he’s already bordering on the best prop of all time at 21. His game continues to evolve - he’s now consistently breaking through the line, he’s starting to ball play somewhat, the offload is beginning to appear, and he is beginning to amass a list of huge defensive efforts (Tedesco try saver, batting the ball dead v Cronulla in the last game).

imo he does his job as good as Trbo or Cleary do, the difference being that a prop can only put the game on a platter for your backs to capitalise on, which ours rarely do, where as a fullback or halfback playing at that level will be a try producing machine. The question I guess though is how much is a prop worth even when they are in a league of their own.

We seem to have no issue producing great young forwards. So I think we can spend big on Haas, a few cheap professionals, and then fill the forward depth with young guys who move on when they are due a big upgrade.

I just don’t see how he would be unhappy with $6m over 6 years. It’s a good deal for him and as many have said it makes more sense for him than to chase money elsewhere and miss out on that increase for the next 3 years.

The only way it goes wrong is if it isn’t just about money but that he’s unhappy at the club, or if there is a scheme unfolding to get out of his contract early.

This is a total fabrication of my imagination but I do have a slight bad feeling that Gould is trying to find space in the Dogs cap already. Even though they just cleaned the decks and started the rebuild. It’s likely Gould just isn’t happy with the way they’ve spent on the rebuild or that they are trying find more money for a hooker or halfback, but part of me has a fear they are working on finding cash for Payne.
