NEWS Haas gets pay bump, long term deal in holding pattern

News LTD is reporting the Broncos board will formally approve a 3 year extension to Payne Haas' existing contract to tie him up for another 6 years. Money not mentioned, but there is talk of grooming him for future captaincy. The deal appears to be done, but won't be formally announced until after the season. It will be the longest contract in the Broncos' 33 year history.

Walters:

“Payne is a natural leader, not so much with his words but his actions. He is never far off the ball whether it’s attack or defence. When you are building a premiership team, you need middle forwards like Payne Haas. The Storm have Jesse Bromwich. The Roosters have Jared Waerea-Hargreaves. Every top team has a dominant prop."

“Payne is a remarkable forward, he has a great work ethic. He wants to win at all costs and that’s what we need throughout the whole club.”

Ikin:

“Payne is a special player. He is a powerhouse, he leads from the front on the field in one of the toughest positions you can play in a game. He brings his best to every training session and every match. He is world class. He is the guy others in the club look to. He does it with his leadership and it’s based on actions. He performs with great humility."

“Payne has this view on the world where he is committed to doing things for others, he is very cognisant of the fact he is part of a team. As single-minded as you need to be to succeed in the front row, Payne has this great affinity for his teammates and they really recognise that. It is innate in Payne. He is leading for others. It‘s not just all about him. He has some magnificent traits as a leader.”

Greg Alexander:

“Having seen him in the NSW set-up, I’ve seen Payne’s attitude. When you sign someone for a long time, you have to consider will they handle things emotionally and does it matter how much they are paid from year to year? The player’s performances would have to stay consistent and I see that in Payne. It wouldn’t matter how much he was paid or how long for, I know Payne would do the job week in, week out.”

Sounds like this could drag out a bit, but I am hoping the club has not upgraded anything without him first agreeing to an extension. It's the only bargaining power we have. He is on contract for three more years thats a long time to risk injury on only 500k. Anything can happen. Oh and if he decided to kick stones and play poorly which i don't see him doing 500k can be choked down while he sits in cup thinking about it, we have swallowed a million before.

If it's what you told me, I don't see any need to keep it private. Yours is a reasonable opinion, but it's not really specific to him alone.
It's not specific to him, but he's being brought up on here and I gave my opinion of what I think of him ( kind of regret it a little now ). I do agree, as I've said, that he wouldn't be the only unscrupulous journalist out there.

I'm keeping it off the public part of this forum out of respect for other people and hope others would do the same. If it was an issue directly with me, I'd have no dramas bringing it up in public.

Respectfully, I don't think it's worth me commenting on him in the same way anymore. Probably shouldn't have done it in the first place and hopefully people don't betray my trust in them. Like I always say, I don't expect anyone to believe me or anyone on a forum they don't know, and no hard feeling to those who don't.

Now back to Payne, just sign ffs.

Apparently you have to let the stocks go up and down for a bit before they explode.
Definitely giving that a go if Dick recommends it. Great tip.

I want Payne to extend his stay more than anyone. But, from Payne’s perspective (and only considering money), taking the upgrade isn’t necessarily a no-brainer.

Assuming he currently averages $600k for the next three years and our new offer is $900k for 6 years - he’d only need to wait and secure a 3 year deal @ $1.2m elsewhere from 2025 to essentially break even. Some club would offer that.

We still need to keep him happy.
A club MIGHT offer 1.2 over 3 in 3 years time, they might not.

He MIGHT stay injury free for the next 3 yrs in order to get that next contract, he might not.

So, a GUARANTEE of $5.4m right now over 6 years, or the possibility of it in the future as long as a club offers you what you hope they do and as long as you don't cop a serious injury.

Yup, I'm sticking with no brainer

Badel says Walters has confirmed Haas has been offered a 6 year deal and denies there is any tension between them:

We are very keen to maintain Payne here. Dave, Ben and Simon Scanlan (recruitment chief), are working through the process on a possible long-term deal for Payne, which is great news for us. I don’t think it’s a risk signing him to a six-year deal, particularly with Payne and his attitude towards his football."

“The thing with Payne is he is still contracted with us, so we aren’t too concerned about completing the deal. He is playing good football, he has had his best season this year and while he continues on that path, he is only 21, he is a good long-term prospect for us. I see it as a good long-term investment for the Broncos.”

“He is the perfect example of a Broncos player. Payne is a great fella to have at the club, he is settled and always has a smile on his face … and we want to try to ensure that his future is here at the Broncos. "

"He is always at the front with his fitness, he is at the front in the gym, he is very strong. He is very consistent with everything that he does. The other thing is Payne is such a popular player among the guys. He is the first one at training and the last to leave.”

Whelp this has just been given the legendary Walter’s kiss of death. See ya Payne

I genuinely wonder what Payne thinks of his mate Dave. He is starting off the bench down there and earning more then double what Payne is reportable on. Playing his comfortable footy and failing to push the Titans into the 8.
It’s remarkable how idiodic the Titans were with Fifita‘s contract .

All I can say is, I’m thankful he knocked back our 800k as even that is well overs for him atm.

Easy
You start with 2 million then follow his advice.
Before you know it you’ll be a millionaire!
Reminds me of Gina Rinehart telling people that if they wanted to become wealthy, they should stop whinging and just work harder (I paraphrase, but that was the gist of it).

I mean, she might work fucking hard for all I know, but it’s pretty easy to say that when you inherent a billion dollar empire.

Whilst the loss might be massive, the risks you can afford to take certainly aren’t as big when you’ve still got a cool couple of billion dollarydoos to lean back on.

I have no idea if she has increased or not old man Hancock’s fortune she inherited.
I think she is rated one of the richest people in Australia so probably hasn’t squandered any of it unlike Jamie packer.

I am not sure who comes up with the headings of articles but nowhere did I read walters confirming that they have offered/presented a 6 year deal to hass.

Kevie has said that DD, ikin and the like are working on a long-term extension, and that he does not see 6 years a as a risk (when directly asked).

The heading is either deliberately false or just wrong.

Yes, I've been saying this all the way through the thread. Normally headlines are done by sub-editors, who've proofed, corrected and fitted the copy to page. How much input the reporter has in this process varies, especially when they' re also a section editor. The current headline and lede now matches the body, for what it's worth. "Set to" allows some wiggle room, it could easily be followed by a "but then."

That said, Badel is very confident this will happen and the publication didn't flinch when Broncos legal pushed back.

So the story has two elements: the offer - which doesn't appear to be in dispute - and how Payne feels about the terms, which is unknown. If the deal were done, it wouldn't need to be "finalised."

If you believe Dobbo, he has again come out this morning saying the extension will happen.
He is adamant Payne has told those close to him he isn’t going anywhere and wants to stay.
Also said that he is splitting with his manager which makes things a little more difficult until that is finalised.
