NEWS Haas gets pay bump, long term deal in holding pattern

News LTD is reporting the Broncos board will formally approve a 3 year extension to Payne Haas' existing contract to tie him up for another 6 years. Money not mentioned, but there is talk of grooming him for future captaincy. The deal appears to be done, but won't be formally announced until after the season. It will be the longest contract in the Broncos' 33 year history.

Walters:

“Payne is a natural leader, not so much with his words but his actions. He is never far off the ball whether it’s attack or defence. When you are building a premiership team, you need middle forwards like Payne Haas. The Storm have Jesse Bromwich. The Roosters have Jared Waerea-Hargreaves. Every top team has a dominant prop."

“Payne is a remarkable forward, he has a great work ethic. He wants to win at all costs and that’s what we need throughout the whole club.”

Ikin:

“Payne is a special player. He is a powerhouse, he leads from the front on the field in one of the toughest positions you can play in a game. He brings his best to every training session and every match. He is world class. He is the guy others in the club look to. He does it with his leadership and it’s based on actions. He performs with great humility."

“Payne has this view on the world where he is committed to doing things for others, he is very cognisant of the fact he is part of a team. As single-minded as you need to be to succeed in the front row, Payne has this great affinity for his teammates and they really recognise that. It is innate in Payne. He is leading for others. It‘s not just all about him. He has some magnificent traits as a leader.”

Greg Alexander:

“Having seen him in the NSW set-up, I’ve seen Payne’s attitude. When you sign someone for a long time, you have to consider will they handle things emotionally and does it matter how much they are paid from year to year? The player’s performances would have to stay consistent and I see that in Payne. It wouldn’t matter how much he was paid or how long for, I know Payne would do the job week in, week out.”

Right, so Haas will be offered a new contract at some point in the future, likely at the end of this season, I could have come up with that.
I don't know why you're arguing about a story you haven't read, but no, as I've said multiple times the gist is the board is ruling on an offer, and Badel has been told it will go through, and furthermore that Haas will sign once the regular season is over. That's a pretty loose timeframe.

At no point has anyone said Haas' management has agreed to this offer, or that the details stemmed from Haas. It's a major hole in the plot that everyone has glossed over.

Your point of view is that Badel isn't credible, based on what I can only see is a misread of what he's actually reported. What the newspaper embellished and how Dobbo reported it, that's another matter. I'm not touching either.

What about the manager?
I am just thinking about the timing and the wording badel uses. He has indicated that the board has signed off on it.

If the leak came from the manager I think it would have been stated that the broncos have offered hass an extension.

I gotta hand it to Weidler ... just as BHQ's negativity and despair had dried up he managed to throw a few extra logs on the fire and some flames have emerged from the coals ... well done Danny

That's not what Badel has written or said. But the newspaper and Dobbo have embellished it. Read these posts:

I would put money on his manager leaking it so other clubs might pipe in and put some negotiation pressure back on the club, but DD is smart and he knows the game well.
I dont really see how that benefits the manager though.

I would say that the deal being rumoured includes a pay bump from 2022 onwards.... so even if another club is interested, then Payne waiting and signing with a different club means any pay bump would be 3 years away.

That doesnt benefit the player, or more importantly, the player manager.

Because it gives him potential leverage to say look Parra are interested and they said they'll offer him 1.2m for 2025, so about we make that 850 offer 875 and get this deal done?

I don't think it's a strong negotiating point but it might give them a tiny bit of leverage to bump the offer.

It depends how much effort the manager has put in before it's been sent to the board.

If they have come to an agreement in principle and waiting on the board to ratify the contract, then it wouldnt make sense for any party directly involved in the negotiations to leak the info and blow it up at the 11th hour.

If the wording of the rumour is to be believed then the board is expected to agree to a new 6yr contract.... that would suggest something has been presented to them with a recommendation from the R&R team following negotiations with Haas.

The Broncos might be a bit spooked with Bennett being back in town, possibly as early as 2023. Playing for an expansion team under the master coach (of whom he greatly admires) would be an appetizing prospect especially if the Broncos are still mired near the bottom.

Total speculation of course but the sooner they sign him long term, the quicker this sort of scenario diminishes.

Trebling down. Note "has approved" and "offer." "Finalised" suggests they're still in negotiation.

Latest rumour from Dean Ritchie is Souths are trying to hang onto Wayne "in some capacity."

The way this has occurred and its timing, I can only assume the leak came directly from someone on the board, which is a big fucking issue and i hope it is pursued.
Sounds like a rat hunt to me. And they might be narrowing it down to the loose lips at the club
