Horrible news. But, I don't think we should be moving everyone around yet, especially as they would have had a whole lot season working out plays in these positions already.

Either drop him, or he plays centre.

Depends on how we want to use him. If we would rather develop others then it makes sense to just let him go now and clear a bit of cap space. If we are happy enough to use him then no way should we let him go.

Seems quite common now for players to sign a one year deal with the Salary cap situation. Look at Nanai for example. Maybe Herbie thought fullback was an option when he signed, and then Walsh came instead. Maybe he just wanted to see if there would be better deals around for 24. Lots of reasons for these 1 year deals.

The other side of that is if Mariner's development is best served by doing another year in Qcup.

If he's ready then sure bring him in... but in Qcup he's played a handful of games and has rotated between wing and centre... that suggests he's not yet found his feet in reserve grade so I can't see how promoting him to first grade straight away is the right call.

The alternative is if we think someone else can do Herbie's role as well OR if we can better utilise that extra top 30 spot by adding extra depth elsewhere.

It could be argued that someone like Pereira or Arthars can fill in at right wing whilst moving Cobbo to left centre... but is Cobbo ready to jump straight into left centre... my main concern would be his ability in defence, considering Herbie is a very very solid defender out there.

We already have a weakness at right centre with Staggs' defence... If Cobbo isn't up to it defensively then we can't allow ourselves to be weak on both sides of the field in a vital defensive position

If Mariner is shoehorned into left centre then the coaching staff will have learnt nothing.

- Herbie is a right winger playing left centre, but made a go of it.
- Cobbo is a left centre/winger.... that thinks he's a fullback (or at least his manager does)... but has played right wing because that's the spot that was open at the time
- Oates should be a right winger with his carry, but has been left sided his whole career... his first try in first grade was running a line as a right sided second rower
- Even Jack Reed was more suited to right side with his right arm carry and offload, but played left side

If Mariner is put at left centre, because that's the spot open at the time... then they will have fucked up again.

Just move Cobbo to left centre... he'll be happy there (and will forget about fullback)... he will dominate from there... he will play for qld there (because we have no one else in qld for the spot).

If they don't then we'll have Cobbo possibly needing to be pleased (with fullback), because he won't want to be a right winger forever... and possibly Mariner looking to move, because he's playing his less preferred left centre instead of right.

havent watched him play alot but bradman best is free to talk to at the end of the year he is a left center if i recall correctly,no idea what his defence is like but if you cant develope one go out and poach one imo lol

Its called a salary cap. You cant offer every player the contract they want. Doesn't mean you want them to leave though.

Very disappointed as he's one of my favourites and has a lot of potential. I wouldn't be letting him go early because The have nobody we want and Mariner still needs to earn his spot by being the better player. One of the biggest reasons we have been in this mess the last few years is we've given entitled players exactly what they want without earning it.
