Hoffman in the halves

Hi, this is my first post. "Long time lurker first time poster". "We're just focusing on one week at a time". "Griffin is ****". OK there are my obligatory cliches out of the way.

Does anyone think Gillett is worth a go at 5/8 until Kahu comes back, pushing Hoffman to wing, Corey Oates to permanent back row rotation, Copely to centre, and Jack Reed out? I know it is far from ideal, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and it would free up the 2nd row congestion a bit.
Remind me , Why are we desperate , honestly, lose to Parra and this place loses it's shit. Currently running 3rd.

I am increasingly becoming convinced that Hoffman plays for Hoffman, and not the team, the players around him. He seems just unaware that a pass, or an offload is really what we need, to keep the ball alive.

The Eels were rather good at that.

Out of interest, isn't it true that there are a number of very young players given opportunities by other clubs to play NRL? Or are they so so far ahead of our talent, that Hoffman is our only option?

I still maintain that we will rarely if ever defeat any of the better sides with Hoffman choking our attack. We can't win the big games with 1 half

On the young talent, they're way ahead of ours because we don't hear about them until they're almost ready. We're aware of our young guys because we constantly enquire about them. By the time we hear of players like Cornish, Gutherson etc, they've already been in the discussion of their teams fans for a while. They're similarly playing in lower grades, but haven't dominated to the point where they demand a call-up. It's only players like Brooks, Keary etc, that have dominated, that get their NRL call-up.

The team as a whole is not desperate - I think we are going great actually. Just saying that for Hoffman to even be considered in the halves shows that particular position is desperate at the moment. I mean I read here calls for Shane Perry to be bought back lol.

Ok. I didn't know our young guns were so ordinary. Looks like Hoffman it is. I didn't know he was so much better than what we have. Another season of treading water waiting for a messiah.

They are not ordinary but their bodies are not mature enough for it yet. Paia'aua and Nikorima are probably closest physically but I don't think Nikorima will be any better than Hoffman. He will die with the ball just as much

Its not that they're ordinary... Its just that they're not ready for the rigors of NRL footy. From all reports we have some talented guys coming through.

Guys like Taylor, Nikorima brothers, Drew, Molo, Duncan P, etc. Unfortunately most of them are probably another year off being ready.

Desperate people always make bad decisions . So we're lucky that BHQ members aren't in control of the Broncos

There are a lot of potentially good young halves floating around at the moment. Looks like Cody Walker (bit older but, he was great in the InTrust Cup last year) is about to sign with Souths after just signing with Melbourne. Ben Hampton, Moses Mybe, Luke Keary, Mitchell Moses, Mitchell Cornish, Isaac John, Joel Romelo, even Ryan Stigg looked great before he went off on Twitter :) Chad Townsend is doing well with his new gig. Our guys Strasser, Taylor and Nikorima have all got some really good potential too. Should be an exciting next generation for origin.

... and the other 18 - 20 year olds in other teams are?

I would rather lose with a young gun trying his heart out than watching Hoffman screw up our attack.
The best two are Taylor and Paia'aua. Taylor is injured and Paia'aua has been sent to ISC presumably to get him ready. If he goes okay then he may be a chance later this season

Even if it means setting that young gun back a few seasons, by destroying his confidence. Which may very well happen if he gets selected before he is ready

because we played like dog poo. there's danger signs that we haven't improved as much as some may think. we've leaked 20 points plus nearly every game and Hoffman is killing us in attack and defense.

The one thing we cannot do is bring them in too early and destroy their confidence potentially pushing their development back another year or two

I agree. Just throwing it out there to see what people thought of Matt Gillett there...

Or we could put them on the bench and use them as a Hooker for 3 years. I'd say this club has been a massive failure at developing halves.

Well how about we not screw up the development of the halves we have, let get them into thr ISC and get them ready for first grade, and when the have shown they are ready (and not 1 second before) we select the for the NRL team... Not off the bench but as a starting half.

Why would their confidence be getting destroyed? They can slot into Hoffman's role to start with, chiming in whenever, except with some idea how halves are supposed to play. Like someone else said, we are sitting 3rd, the rest of the side is generally playing pretty damn well. It's just mostly Hoffman and Reed.

Anyway, whoever allowed us to get into this retarded position shouldn't have a job with the club.
