Colin Love?? What tha?? Defeats the purpose of an INDEPENDANT commission if the ARL Chairman is simply going to move into that role. If Colin Love has this role, I fear that nothing will change, in fact it may even go backwards. And from the initial article:

Mr Howard, a St George-Illawarra fan, has a strong knowledge of the game and is seen as independent of its co-owners, News Ltd and the Australian Rugby League, neither of which would be reportedly represented on the commission.
Well that "reportedly" is clearly wrong.

And also if they charge Michael Searle with the responsibility of doing all the groundwork of getting the commission set up, why wouldn't they tell him that the inaugural chairman was already in place.

Typical same old crap that is the reason there are so many problems in the administration of the game at the moment.

On the flipside, if John Howard does run the game, you would have to think government funding would all but disappear, labor wouldn't want to make Howard look good.

Do they provide funding?

If they do, cutting it wouldn't be a good move, would make Rudd look like more of a twat, and he would lose voters over it.

Pretty sure all major sports receive some level of Federal Funding (in fact I think NRL just got some more the other day hence why Gallop didn't really want to talk about the prospect of Howard taking on this role just after the funding had been signed off). But yeah Nashy you're right, any government would look really bad if they cut funding because a former opponent was in a position of power within the sport.

Yep. Fact is Howard's a retired politician. He shouldn't be considered "opposition" to the Government, even if his personal opinion is opposed to the government. So what? There are businesses the world over who cooperate and compete to get government grants who are run by people who support the opposition. Some very openly and actively. It doesn't and shouldn't matter.

Rudd seems very keen to come across as interested in the best man for the job and, to a degree, bipartisan. A retired Liberal is just another candidate for a position. Brendan Nelson a case in point. I'm sure the Rudd Government would have a good working relationship with the NRL even if Howard was in power. If anything, Kev's desire to look like the friendliest guy ever would result in him throwing any and all support he can in the way of Howard, to make himself seem like such a great guy that he doesn't hold grudges.
