A PUSH for a radical restructuring of the National Rugby League seems to be gathering pace, with the former prime minister John Howard reportedly approached to head an independent commission to run the game.

Although it is just rumours and stuff, but Howard would be awesome to have a part of rugby league in a comissioner role. As much as he made some unpopular decision he was a good leader.

Will depend who his lackies are, he is too old school for me, in ideas, image and football terms

Agreed with Russo. The bloke is 70 years old FFS! On top of that, how much coin would he be expecting?

Fine idea as such, but I just don't think Howard is the right person for the role. Not at this late stage of his life anyway - doesn't the poor bastard want to retire some day?

The idea has merit seeing as he isn't tied to News or the ARL. Whether he is the man for the job is debatable but the administration of the game is in dire need of an overhaul. I'm heartened by this report as it indicates the wheels are turning, ever so slowly.

Rather than who will be on it, I am more interested to know more about the structure, the roles and responsibilies and the authority of this commission. If it means getting rid of all the different bodies with their own agendas and in many respects working against each other and having one body to run the game at all levels then I am all for it. If it is just one more body added into the mix then I am against it. From that report it sounds like this new commission will basically be it, but I can't see either the ARL or the NRL giving up their bit of power in the game.

And therein lies the problem. [icon_non

I think the idea has merit also. I can't imagine he would have anything to do with the 'football' side of things, but rather as an overseer of who is in charge of what, and to be perfectly honest, the man is more than qualified.

I can't see him doing it though, why would he want to? He's 70.

Too old for what?

There are some pretty baseless comments been posted here.

If anyone has the stones and respect to truly unite the NSWRL, QRL, ARL and CRL it's Howard. I think he's the man to shake the parasites out of their comfortable, nothing jobs.

My only concern is that he would rather spend the last few years of his life with his grand kids etc. Retirement...

Wouldn't he be biased towards all saints supporters?

Plus the Sharks will never get a shot at the big time.

Are you suggesting that what the League needs is someone who does not have a favourite club? That would mean you need someone who knows nothing about the game wouldn't it?

Maybe, but I suppose the grass isn't always greener on the other side

In that case it is Jeff Kennett to the rescue on his white charger, he's only 61 lolz

I disagree that Howard is too old for the job. He's passionate anout rugby league and was Primie Minister for a decade well into his 60s when a lot of people at that age would be slowing down.

Is Michael Searle committed to the Gold Coast? He's also someone who would be worthwhile.

What about John Singleton? Personally I think he would be a good candidate.
