Israel Folau wants out... I'll show him the door.

He was being diplomatic, probably didn't want to upset anyone (likely the new club being the biggest). If I were in his shoes I would play down the money because it's so obvious, it doesn't need to be said. Besides, saying he only left for the money might even jeopardize his new contract.

Haha Folau can't win.

Example 1.
Folau: "I didn't do it for the money, I did it for the challenge!"
Fans: "FUCKING! LIAR!!! Tell the truth you dishonest ****!"

Example 2.
Folau: "I went for the money, $1m is too good to refuse."
Fans: "Where's your fucking loyalty scum?? League made you!! Greedy ****!"

Catch 22 really.

Oh for sure, he was in for criticism regardless. So just be honest. Nobody could possibly believe he did it for the challenge primarily.

Apparently 90% of the salary is "promotional marketing" and the rest for the actual footy on the paddock.
Has it crossed anyone's mind that this contract might have a clause where Folau must emphasise the "will to embrace the AFL challenge" and avoid the "I did it for the money" thing...? eusa_think

I can't wait to see what happens in a few years time when Hunt & Folau's contracts run out. Even if they make successful transitions to AFL they're never going to get the same sort of money they're being paid now. Unless they make it to the very top with the Gary Abletts or Chris Judds they'll be offered a few hundred thousand dollars at most. What then? Do they just sell themselves off to the football code making the highest bid?

I don't blame them for taking the money and doing the best they can for their families but it just looks sordid & mercenary.

Don't forget, the length of an Austrian Incest season is 18 years...

Falou and Hunt have gone for the big dollars while they're young and while they can. I don't blame them for it and I hope they are happy with their decisions. I don't know if they see it as a final career move, or a temporary one. But, at such a young age they had achieved all that League could offer them. They've both represented their country, both won premierships and both been involved in State of Origin series wins, there's not much more that RL has to offer. They'll both be in their mid 20s when their contracts are up and may want to return to league or continue in AFL or even play Union. Who's to deny them that right. I'd welcome them both back at the Broncos.

I find it interesting with people saying that Folau didn't lie to anyone or deceive the club or whatever. Now I know he has never said anything publicly, but after seeing Locky interviewed a few times today I do wonder what he told the club / his team-mates. Locky seemed really really pissed about him going to AFL and I have it on very good authority that he called the Qld selectors and demanded that Issy not be considered for Origin selection. This reaction from Locky really makes me think Issy had likely told the club / his team-mates that he was going to re-sign. An assumption I know, but I haven't seen Locky seem so ............................................ betrayed.

FB, direct quote from Lockyer

"When it comes to playing for Queensland and Australia it's an honour and privilege," Lockyer said on Wednesday.

"When you decide to turn your back on that, I think the jersey is bigger than any one player."

Me too draggx - as I said I don't know what was/wasn't said by Issy at any point to his team-mates/the club, I'm just speculating based on Locky's reaction.

And yes Broncospwn, I saw that interview as well as several others where he seemed to feel personally insulted by the defection.
