James Roberts Drama

I really don't understand why Roberts would be out drinking just under 24 hours before an important game.

I think that's a damn good question, game or training.

Maybe it has something to with his State of Mind ... hang on ... hasn't the NRL got something to say about that?

Has anyone ever met a manager at a bar who wouldn't press charges if someone spat in their face? Ever?

Exactly! Well half of em anyway.... And the other half have more speed than Oxford Street getting out the back door whenever the bacon shows up.

I reckon there is every chance it was a relatively benign incident that quickly escalated through a combination of pub security roid rage cop wannabes putting someone in a choke hold and Roberts probably not wanting to be touched by said security guards.

He's difficult to put down in a tackle by 3 NRL players, I assume 3 fat security guards would have to go over the top to "control" Roberts.

All of a sudden you've got a bloke in a choke hold.

Pin-dick bouncer gets to feel like a big man for wailing on a footy player who is three sheets to the wind... Plenty of good blokes working the door out there, but it seems to attract a fair few of the bad apples as well doesn't it?

In valley few years back witnessed two seperate groups of blokes try and start Te'o within about an hour... Just so they could show off to their mates that they weren't afraid of a footy player. Deadset deserve a flogging - but what can you do.

There's no way they're going to release a video showing their guard choking somebody out.

And that's while probably before they got him to the blind spots lol....

Anyways point being, even when your not a footy player it is that easy to get some overzealous, pissed off seccie or bartender kicking you or a friend out a bar for no good reason... Being a footy player would make it that much worse I reckon.

Sounds like a bloke crying out for help to be honest... We've always had a no dickheads policy at the Broncs under Clint, that hasn't changed. I could be wrong but sounds more like he's got some shit to work through, and isn't too bad a bloke underneath.

You'd like to think/hope that Darbs'd be giving him a bit of help and pointing him in the right direction.

Darren Lockyer has urged James Roberts to give up alcohol for his welfare, Broncos’ title hopes

BRISBANE legend Darren Lockyer has urged James Roberts to give up alcohol for the sake of his welfare and the Broncos’ premiership hopes.

The Courier-Mail can reveal Roberts will be ordered to undergo alcohol education and counselling under a welfare-management plan involving the Rugby League Players Association.

The NRL expects a final report from the Broncos this week. While the NRL integrity unit will not impose the 12-month alcohol ban they issued Roberts when he joined the Titans in 2014, the behavioural watchdog will expect the troubled centre to receive professional help.

But Lockyer, Brisbane’s last premiership captain and a current Broncos board member, has turned up the heat on Roberts, advising him to enact a self-imposed booze ban.

Lockyer was the club’s skipper when Brisbane’s entire 2006 squad made a pact to shun alcohol on the eve of that year’s final series.

The booze-free Broncos produced an epic late-season surge to win the premiership and Lockyer challenged Roberts to make a personal sacrifice for his Broncos teammates.

“I can guarantee if James Roberts gives the drink away, it will have a positive impact on his own performance and the team’s performance,” Lockyer said.

“I remember out of all the premierships we won at the Broncos, we as individual players made sacrifices for the team camaraderie.

“(In 2006), all the guys said, ‘We aren’t going to have a beer for a while’ and it showed in our commitment and performance.”

Roberts has struggled to consistently produce his best this season but Lockyer is adamant ‘The Jet’ will fire on the field if he overhauls his attitude off it.

The 23-year-old has never played in a finals series and can’t afford to be battling mental demons during the playoffs.

“The Broncos have to say to James, ‘We are in a position to win a title here and you need to make some sacrifices for yourself and the team’,” Lockyer said.

“The best thing for Roberts is to get off the drink.

“From James’ perspective, he’s had a quiet year compared to last year and there’s been more hype for him to deal with.

“James has one of the best coaches in the game in Wayne Bennett to help him. But if there is an underlying issue with alcohol, then he needs to steer clear of it.”

Despite Roberts being sacked twice previously, the NRL will not order him to check into a rehab facility. But they will expect him to receive ongoing counselling and the Broncos have already drafted a welfare plan.

RLPA general president Clint Newton will meet with Broncos boss Paul White on Monday to discuss the Roberts case.

“We’re involved in the process and we’re optimistic about what the end result will be for James moving forward,” he said. “We need to understand the complexities of his case and make sure James and his family are at the centre of everything we do.”

No suspension for Jimmy, just a $20,000 fine.

The player welfare of James Roberts is the top priority in a complete personal development plan for the player that will be instigated after collaboration and consultation with the NRL and Rugby League Players Association.

The solution was proposed and has now been agreed to by the NRL after the true factual evidence of recent reported incidents was ascertained by their integrity unit.

While not arrested, Roberts was issued a fine for public nuisance in Brisbane earlier this month, a fact the Broncos advised the NRL of well before there was any public knowledge of the incident.

Roberts was also fined $20,000 over the matter today.

The framework for a complete personal development and wellbeing plan for the player has been outlined and agreed to, and will require sustained effort from Roberts, his management, the Broncos’ club and coaching staff.

This plan will include personal undertakings, community service on designated player days off, and a consistent review and updating of the program, which can be overviewed by the NRL and NRLPA.

Broncos’ chief executive Paul White said the club was determined to obtain positive outcomes from the incident for both the player and the community.

“We informed the NRL of this matter before it became public and have continued to provide them any and all assistance in their investigation,” said White.

“This will be a total plan for James’ development and wellbeing, and will have high regard for both the issues of the past and what we are hoping for going into the future.

“Going back to provide benefit to the community is an appropriate way to acknowledge a breach of community standards.

“This is not just a punishment, but about forward development for James and a way for him to gain some grounding and provide assistance to the Broncos’ well-documented community activities.”

I think this is a fair punishment. Hopefully the club helps him get his shit together. He strikes me as the kind of guy who, when everything falls into place, could blow the competition away.

On The Kennel the conspiracy theorists are out & about.

I am fighting the good fight.

I am linking news sites about Ben Barba allegedly hitting a woman & got only 3 weeks & that the Dogs didn't tell the Integrity Unit the real story on him being stood down.

I know, I should give up, but I can't.

Keep serving it up Kaz but don't be too truthful you'll get permabanned like me.

Bad for business if they released the footage and co-operated. Footy stars will just go elsewhere.

And 20k.

Wow.

That's going to hurt him!

JAMES Roberts is one scandal away from having his NRL contract torn up after being fined $20,000 by the Broncos for his latest drunken transgressions.

The Courier-Mail can reveal Roberts is at risk of having his registration to play in the NRL cancelled if he is embroiled in another major off-field incident.

On Wednesday the NRL agreed to a package of measures imposed by the Broncos — including a hefty fine and a personal-development plan — after Roberts was involved in two alcohol-fuelled incidents.

Broncos chief executive Paul White declined to speculate on whether Roberts, sacked twice previously by Souths and Penrith, is on his last chance at Red Hill.

But it is understood the NRL has put Roberts on notice that the governing body won’t tolerate any more incidents that bring the game into disrepute.

An NRL source said Roberts’ registration would be reviewed if he committed another breach of his obligations relating to off-field conduct.

The NRL is losing patience with him.

In 2014, the NRL integrity unit imposed a 12-month alcohol ban on Roberts, which expired in March 2015, but another alcohol-related scandal will see the Broncos centre kicked out of the NRL.

Roberts is free to take his place against Melbourne on Friday night at AAMI Park, but White said the Broncos acted strongly by dishing out the biggest fine in the club’s history.

“We want to respond in a way that I’m not sitting here again,” White said.

“The NRL will also have a view of multiple offences and we are well aware of those. The heavy onus is on James to turn things around and make a positive contribution.

“I’ve looked James in the eye and I wanted to make sure he was as committed as I was. Hopefully he can have a long-term future with our club, but I’m not going to comment on last chances.”

The Broncos have made Roberts pay a heavy price, literally, for two alcohol-fuelled incidents in the past month. One drunken misdemeanour saw Roberts issued an infringement notice for public nuisance.

Despite his slew of alcohol-related sagas, he will not be placed on a booze ban. But the Broncos will subject Roberts to a strict personal-development plan that involves counselling and community work on his days off.

“It will be an onerous one — he has put himself in this position but we will respond in a way that’s meaningful to the community. He needs to put back into the community,” White said.

“We’re not going to sit here and say we’ll impose an alcohol ban, if James chooses to do that, we’ll support that.

“But we have put together a full and complete plan which not only deals with the welfare of the player but has some responsibility placed on him for the breach of community standards.

“My accountability is to make sure this plan succeeds.”

I get the feeling he is gonna **** up again, probably in the off-season once all this blows over. Seems like the guy can't help himself. Hope I'm wrong.

I think he should have sat out a week just to send a message to him a d the playing group. Wayne has always been very soft on his players.

Ray Hadley just compared the Broncos giving Roberts a final warning for his alcohol "antics" to Parramatta offering Norman a big contract after his drug conviction
