James Roberts signs with the Brisbane Broncos

Was about to go out and then I saw this video. Now I'm going to be late. But how can you not watch a Renouf highlights package, the guy was amazing. Also a proud Bronco. Fantastic role model as well.

Where you headed?

Well I'm heading on the train to my mates place - to play 4 days of rugby league live 3 and will be adding Roberts to the roster! Let's see what kind of season we can create with this talent!

Sick! Xbox 360?

Hear me out...

Roberts wants to break in to the NSW squad, right? They backline mainstays include JMoz (centre), Jennings (centre), Dugan (fullback/centre), Ferguson (centre/winger), BMoz (winger). Morris is the only career winger. And they want to find room for Tedesco (fullback) & Moylan (fullback).

Our main backline is Boyd (fullback), Copley (centre, sucks at wing), Reed (centre), Kahu (centre/fullback playing on the wing), Oates (backrower doing a mighty fine job on the wing). Let's just say that we're able to offload Maranta & Glenn. And it's decided that Oates' development as a NRL-spec backrower is nigh. Would the below be crazy?:

01 Boyd
02 Roberts
03 Reed
04 Copley
05 Kahu
---
11 Gillett
12 Thaiday
--
14 Oates

Yes we'd lose Oates' freight-train kick-returns. And I don't know what Roberts' ability is under the high ball. But I can picture him grabbing a kick deep in our in-goal and scoring a few 105 metre tries...

Won't happen.

The trade-off isn't worth it imo, Roberts would get targeted every game under the high ball. He's 100% a centre at this stage of his career, until he learns to catch he won't be going anywhere near the wing or fullback.

Is it established that he can't catch though? I've not seen him play on the wing or fullback, but it was stated during his hunt for a new club that he'd like to shift to fullback eventually. Hopefully he'd have realised that means he'd have to have a decent pair of hands.

If he can catch I wouldn't mind seeing him out on the wing, even if only for one or two games against spud teams like the Titans as a bit of a larf.

Nah his hands are horrible, i think he was like 1st or 2nd in errors made last season, although admittedly he did have to try and do everything himself, because he had no talent around him.

Robert's as a young kid was originally a fullback coming through the grades. Like most young talents, they're too good to not be in first grade, but usually their preferred position is already occupied, so they get placed on the wing, and eventually make do playing wing or centre. It happened with a lot of great players. Hodges, Inglis, even Lockyer had to bide his time till he got his preferred position.

Robert's is good under the high ball. His handling issues at the Titans came from trying to do too much. He was rarely put into space, instead he had to create his own space. Since he was the only one who could pull off something special, often the Titans just gave him the ball and hoped for the best. At the Broncos, he won't need to do everything on his own, which will lower his errors significantly. With Milford, Hunt, Boyd out the back, his role is already much simplified.

I think If he wanted to make the transition to fullback down the track, he would be able to so successfully. Coming through the grades, he did remind me a bit of a young Inglis at Melbourne, and I can see a similar transition to fullback if he chooses too. He already has blistering pace, deceptively strong, good footwork, great overall awareness and instincts and a hidden passing ability (albeit it may still need some work). He has all the attributes to make a good fullback.

Doesn't have the size of Inglis though

Don't like how Bennett compared Roberts to Steve Renouf. I remember saying this when Bennett compared Milford to Lockyer but I really don't like how players with potential get compared to the greats before they've even played a game for us yet at the time. Roberts could turn out to be a prize signing or he could bomb you never know what might happen, the season is still a good 3 months away yet I'm going to give it time. I still remember how Brett Seymour was cheered on by everybody but turned out to be a bust.

I like Roberts as a centre. Don't think of him as a ball player, just a straight up hole runner, and someone who can pull something out of nothing.

Then again Hodges was similar, but then he showed all of us what he can do from fullback as well.

Bennett often says publicly what the players need to hear. Roberts might have needed that inspiration to get him over the line to sign as a Bronco.

Brett Seymour. I've said it a million times - he was perfect for the Broncos, for Lockyer. Such a shame, for us, and for him.
