Johnathan Thurston to announce tomorrow, that he is staying in rugby league on a 3 year contract.

I think that is a big plus for league & Queensland, hopefully Falou can make his decision behind JT's & stay in the game.

good news for QLD and the NRl oh. but i do think the Cows may have paid too much to keep him resulting in a poor team... lets hope Folau makes the right decision and stays with us

A great result. Big chunk out of the Cowboys cap if the reported value is being paid but the Cowboys need him more than anything.

The last reported value I heard was 500k with 50k in third party deals each year, who knows how accurate any of the figures we hear are though.

If the salary cap goes up in the next couple of years as rumoured, I think it's a pretty good price.

The Cowboys have a lot of dead wood in other areas (Webb the most notable) that can be let go to sign some better players and there are a lot of promising juniors coming through.

If Folau stays, it won't be with the Broncos. Re-negotiating his contract wouldn't exactly be on Bruno's top-priorities I'm sure.

They were saying on the coverage of last nights game that Thurstons contract was in the vicinity of $2million over 3 years.

That seems a bit much to me, but i'm glad he's staying in the NRL

Folau isn't worth the money other clubs/codes are willing to pay him. Not saying he's not a good player and it would be great if the Broncos could keep him, but it's not worth losing other potential stars or not being able to recruit other players in more cruicial positions just to keep a somewhat overrated outside back.

Agreed.

If the rumours are true and the Broncos have been approached by Greg Inglis and Billy Slater, if we got either of them (we could never afford both) they'd be much better value than Folau.

Whatever they pay thurston, its worth it. He is the only player in the game right now that can single handedly win his team games.

And he'll need to, because for what they're paying him they won't be able to afford any decent forwards.

theyve got an awesome forward pack as it is, and the best part about it is that none of them are big name players and none have played origin/test/won grand finals apart from Mason, and theyre paying him peanuts.

Yes, but how are they going to be able to afford to retain guys like Bolton once they make their rep debuts?

sign them for as long as they can before they get selected for rep duty lol.

also now theres the incentive of playing with Thurston for 3 more years. that would be a pretty good carrot to dangle in front of some players.

Haha, with no upgrade bonuses? They have player managers don't they? :P

You mean like Dave Taylor? Nah players don't get upgrades/bigger offers from their clubs or others before they play rep football [icon_lol1.

O'Donnell and Kaufusi would be on fair pay packets I would say, they've both played international football.

Although I will say the Cowboys have one thing in their favor, no Bruno Cullen so theres always hope [icon_lol1.
