Re: Josh Dugan - Broncos withdraw their offer
I can understand why he reacted, but I still can't see the Broncos accepting it. I'm still dumbfounded that he and his family didn't just completely shut down social media after his sacking, especially since they were subjected to ongoing abuse. Just silly.
As for people getting away with it, well, that's the nature of the beast that social media and the internet in general has created. The fact it's free, unfiltered communication means you take the brickbats with the compliments. For all the great information sharing and connecting that goes on, there's just as much filth and anger.
It's like being at a game of footy. The crowd yells a mixture of support and abuse. It ranges from benign to outright disgusting. As spectators, we can choose to let the disgusting stuff go, or we can report it to security and see if something is done, such as getting the people kicked out. The players on the field, if they hear it, simply have to ignore it because any retaliation is all on them. Just think to Tallis and his reaction to the sign about his mum. The criticism was, at least initially, of Tallis.
Social media is exactly the same. You see insults of varying degrees of offensiveness fly through. Most of it you just ignore, some of it you might go as far as to block the person, others you might report to the social media services (Twitter, Facebook, BHQ) and hope something is done. Often it's not.
That's where as an individual you make the decision to 1. Keep blocking, or 2. stop using it.
BHQ has struggled with baiting and carrying on for the duration of its 15 years as a forum. We've toyed with making it fully moderated requiring every single post to be reviewed first, but that takes away completely from the experience. So baiting becomes something the staff just have to deal with, and it's fucking annoying how childish it gets sometimes. I bet Twitter and Facebook staff feel the same thing, multiplied by 100 million!
