Kahu has to goal kick

One of the most common complaints among fans is the goal-kicking. As great as Corey Parker has been on the field, his goal-kicking has hurt the Broncos on multiple occasions.

Round 25 2004 vs Souths Drew 32-32 (Parker 5/6 goals)
Round 9 2006 vs Knights Lost 32-30 (Parker 5/6 goals)
Round 25 2007 vs Bulldogs Lost 25-24 (Parker 4/5 goals)
Round 9 2009 vs Sea Eagles Lost 22-20 (Parker 2/4 goals)
Round 16 2009 vs Parramatta Lost 21-14 (Parker 1/3 goals) (It was 14 all until the final minutes, Parra kicked the field goal and scored a try when the game was theirs)
Round 26 2010 vs Canberra Lost 18-16 (Parker 2/3 goals)
Round 1 2011 vs Cowboys Lost 16-14 (Parker 1/3 goals)
Round 9 2011 vs Storm Lost 29-22 (Parker 3/4 goals) (It was 22 all with minutes remaining until Cronk kicked a field goal and Melbourne finished with a try)
Round 10 2012 vs Sea Eagles Lost 24-22 (Parker 0/4 goals)
Round 3 2014 vs Roosters Lost 30-26 (Parker 3/6 goals)
Round 8 2014 vs Rabbitohs Lost 28-26 (Parker 1/3 goals)
Round 18 2014 vs Panthers Lost 35-34 (Parker 5/6 goals)
Round 7 2015 vs Dragons Lost 12-10 (Parker 0/2 goals)
Round 22 2015 vs Bulldogs Lost 18-16 (Parker 2/3 goals)
Round 24 2015 vs Roosters Lost 12-12 (Parker 0/1 goals)

Granted to blame Parker's goal-kicking for those results is unfair, but it goes to show how important an accurate goal-kicker can be. They can be the difference between victory and defeat and in such a close competition to lose 15 games is a lot, especially the three or so last year.

Now Jordan Kahu doesn't have the best kick percentage (68.75%) according to Rugby League Project. However he appears to be the best alternative the Broncos have (Milford & Hunt being the others) and the way he strikes them is impressive. In tonight's game he kicked three very valuable goals that gave Brisbane the breathing room they needed to fend off a fast finishing Titans. If he's handed the reigns, his numbers should improve (given he'll take more attempts than just the one or two which invariably happen down the sideline) and he maybe an even better goal-kicker.

For a team that relies a lot on penalty kicks, it confuses me that this change hasn't happened.

Do you agree or disagree?

I don't understand why it hasn't happened already. Are they worried it will look like some kind of demotion?

It wouldn't be the first time for Corey.

In 2013, Scott Prince had 70 attempts at goal while Corey Parker only had 16 in total.

Come to think of it, add the Round 16 2013 v Warriors clash to the list.

Parker had a penalty goal in the dying stages to send it to golden point. The kick looked good but swung away at the last moment.

I've tried my best to forget about it. I was handling the BroncosHQ Twitter and wrote that it went over. Delayed coverage got the better of me and the ABC commentary team led me astray. Their call went something like Parker lines it up, it's looking good, it's looking better than that, OH MY GOD HE'S...

I've never been more embarrassed.

It simply has to happen. Parker is at his peak, and it isn't a good peak as far as goal kickers go. Kahu looks to have more potential to be a really good goal kicker.

What's Parker's kick percentage this year? It has to be pretty bad.

As good as JK was tonight, there was occasions last year when he couldn't even get the distance required from the sideline for the conversions. I agree that he should be the permanent goal kicker, but he needs to work on it still, a lot.

66%: 1/4, 2/3, 2/3, 6/6, 1/2

Take the Cows game out and it drops to 50%.

Milford: 2/2, 1/1 for 100% (all penalties though)

Kahu: 1/2, 1/1, 3/3 for 83%

I never understand why people do this when talking about stats.

Well because there was a lot of penalty goals from right in front for that game, Parker is probably a 95% penalty goal kicker in his career, but it goes both ways, he's probably 60% on try conversions, which is obviously horrible.

I almost think they should be 2 completely seperate %s when they display a goal kickers stats, someone like Parker would have an inflated goal kicking % because we take the 2 more than anyone else.

I was worried about that too when he took over Parker towards the back end of that game. He seems to have it sorted, but yeah they're only just going over. Another observation is his how short his lead up to the kick is...he kind of just takes three steps and hits it. Maybe it's to stay balanced?

Kahu kicked all through his junior footy. He was the kicker in the U20's too. It's something he's done most of his life and he has a good, natural action, that's repeatable and simplistic. Get him with a kicker like Halligan or Johns for a period of time to iron out some minor things like kick distance, ball placement etc and he'll be as good as De Vere was, IMO.

I think you've got him mixed up with his brother Jared.

Gagai was the goal-kicker when Kahu played (Norman was the back-up).

I've got an image of Kahu goal kicking. He must have kicked in School Boy footy, then?

Yep for Keebra.

Couple of his old highlights are on YouTube. Well worth a watch.

That's where my mental image is from then. I thought it was U20's, but it was for Keebra. Anyway, my point was, he kicked for them and his action was the same.

Even if you want to disregard my original comment, if you want separate %'s for conversions and penalties, Parker is still only at 50% for conversions with 6/12. 6/6 for penalties

True, although I never quite understood why... probably just hierarchy.

He was the GK and quite good at Keebra Park!

[EDIT] I should really read the whole thread before replying to stuff...
