NEWS Kevin Walters interview

Not really sure what point you’re trying to prove. @Mr Fourex claimed Milford was the only player who could be a potential game breaker, it wasn’t true. Therefore the argument is over. Positions don’t matter. If the law of averages favour a centre over our million dollar half, especially recently, then I’d say that’s pretty fucked

I am done with relying on Milford for anything. I don’t expect him to do shit. The entire game plan for two years was pass it to Haas or Fifita while Milford hid. Milford hasn’t been reliable for anything since like 2018 and even then wasn’t good enough and showed what kind of player he was. And before anyone brings up his player of the year award, he only won it because they couldn’t give it to Lodge. There’s no more excuses, he steps up and does his job or he can take the millions he’s earned and **** off elsewhere.

Milford had potential to be one of the greats, now he could potentially never recover.
I'm certainly not in the camp of relying on Milford, far from it. I do agree though that on paper at least in a previous life he's been capable of being a regular match winner before and he might still be the best (but very slim) hope that Kev has at his disposal, because outside of that I don't see much.

Staggs and the others you mentioned have won games for us before, but no player who plays a position where they touch the ball a handful of times a game in the opposition half is going to win you games on a regular basis (and nor should we expect them to), so I don't see them belonging in the conversation about consistent and reliable match winners.

I don’t see Milford belonging in the conversation either. And he probably has as many effective touches as every other player I listed. That’s my point entirely. The fact he’s on the same level as those players is why it’s a problem.

I haven't seen anyone, perhaps aside from @broncsgoat, who isn't in agreeance with that point though.

I haven't been kind to Milf's form from the past two years moreso just trying to remind everyone of what he was before Voldemort arrived and burnt our boats.

I think the issue Seibold had was he wasnt backing the players... it seemed like players were either getting a tap on the shoulder to move on or the club weren't trying to persuade them to stay... under the guise of creating cap space.. not a great environment to be playing in I'd imagine.

Players were being made well aware that they weren't in the plans so what was the motivation for them... it was like Seibold had made up his mind and the player didn't have a chance to change that.

Even if a player isn't in your plans you don't just shut them down and give them no hope... you just reward the player that is doing well and tell them if they want that spot then they have to earn it
Yeah 100%. There was something like that bubbling around S'ua, who as I understand it was told it didn't matter how well he played he wasn't getting back into first grade, and Roberts, who copped a public dressing down for doing what he thought Seibold wanted him to do. Last year especially the team lacked cohesion and it looked like the players were playing as individuals trying to make sure they didn't cop the blame when things went wrong instead of as a cohesive unit where everyone trusted his teammate and helped out the player next to him. Kevvie talks about unity a hell of a lot so I'm expecting this is one of the first things he'll address.

I agree with you. For mine, simply looking at Milford as a "match winner" - a brilliant, individual strike player, misses Kevvie's point from his perspective of building a team. That is what I see as Kevvie's focus.

I hear Kevvie saying that Milford, as our most senior and most talented playmaker, is the focus, or pivot literal and metaphorical, around which he wants to construct winning combinations. Importantly, Walters said "... Anthony playing to his strengths, as well as putting some structure around him." That for me was Seibold's biggest failure, a lack of structure in which, and through which, Milford can do his stuff in the way he and BHunt did in '15. They worked together, as well as doing their own thing. In fact, Walters clearly refers to those days, so he must be planning to develop combinations as well as drawing the best out of Milford as an individual strike player.

A model I also think of is the way Bennett uses Reynolds and Walker, or Cleary and Luai at the Panthers, 2 halves playing together, working off each other but with structures in the middle and on the edges which are in place to capitalise on the opportunities they create.

Then, there is Milford's kicking game, something on which he has worked very hard. He has shown that he can control a game with his kicking, for mine, no less effectively than Reynholds or Cleary. Our side lacks a class kicker except for Milford. Dearden for mine is barely adequate - something I am sure Walters will work on. The "new" game relies on quality kicking so much.

Whether Milford answers the call to arms is the obvious issue in the posts I read on here, and there is a solid basis for doubts, but, there is for mine an equally solid basis to be positive, and that basis is Walters. Can't wait

Did you break your back doing that backflip?

His post doesn't say that he believes Kev is the right man for the job, which is what he disagreed with, along with many of us.

Now that he's there. We will get behind him. Him deserving to have a long and successful career here doesn't say anything except that people are getting behind the coach, and recognise that even if he's a shit coach, he deserves a good tenure at this club.

Im happy staggs will be cutting TPJs hair now,no chance of a covid breach

Staggs, Isaako, Oates and Coates have all been game changers for us over the last few years. It’s simply not true that Milford is our only potential game changer
C'mon...get serious. Fucken Isaako....that'll do me. :rofl

There's no one.

What I mean is a player who can turn nothing into something.....who can find you points. Who can win you a game, literally on his own. A JT .......etc etc (previously mentioned Lockyer, Alf......Wal)....Munster almost did it the other night for QLD
....and I said, Milford's the closest thing to, not saying he ever would be as talented as the greats, but for raw talent and football instincts, Milford has/had the goods.

and I'm not bagging Dearden, I like him. I think he'll be good for the team.....good for Milford. I just don't think he'll ever be close to the players I mentioned above. He might be more of a Cooper Cronk type of great.....someone who really isn't that talented, but works fucken hard on their game.
