THE EX Kevin Walters

Which annoys me no end, why aren't they fit enough? They haven't looked fit since 2016.
Fitness is not the issue in my opinion. I believe they're very fit and although well beaten they were still competing to the very end. Our strength is our forwards and we just aren't using them correctly plus our rhs needs a lot of work. Parra just kept going there and kept scoring. Plug that leak and we're right in it.

If only we didn't keep RUSHING our 5th tackle ptb.

Just a side note but I'd like to see the NRL/refs clamp down on players walking and jostling forward into the marker while playing the ball. None of this 'shortened it' bullshit, just stop the player in possession from gaining unearned metres . It leads to bullshit 6 agains because the marker/tackler is trying to get to the place where the tackle occurred but he cannot because the player in possession keeps moving forwards. Makes my blood boil especially as we are getting unfairly penalised a lot while trying to get up and into correct marker position.

Bulldogs going to beat the sharks, broncos second spoon incoming. Feels good

Yep...there used to be a rule against playing it off the mark....the mark used to be where the tackle was called held. Seems that rule doesn't apply anymore.
The rules are all now heavily slanted to the attacking team. Part reason why we are seeing avalanche scores......across all games.

re fitness....we're the wrong kind of fit.......wrong kind of muscle. Its all show and no go.

They are soft.

Won't be sad to get rid of Dearden and Coates. Both extremely over-rated at the moment purely because of their age. If they want big deals, cya later.

I feel for Walters.

He's found himself in a thankless role where he's got to try and build a team with broken pieces. Player agents are telling their players to steer clear from the club until they sort themselves out. Which is difficult to do, especially when the NRL pits them against most of the top teams to start the year.

I don't think there's much more he can do with the squad he inherited. I think he's named the best 17 he could most weeks and when they haven't delivered he's given other players an opportunity to impress. Some of them like Corey Oates have taken their opportunity meanwhile a player like Tom Dearden was disappointing despite receiving numerous chances.

I don't think there's a magic bullet. The best they have is Kotoni Staggs and he isn't going to be Tom Trbojevic. He'll certainly help but it's a learning process for the team. The hope is that over time they can improve and it can help put Brisbane in a better position where they can negotiate with player agents.

While I won't be tipping them, I don't think the next win is that far away for the club either. In fact I would not be shocked at all if they get up on Friday night.

Since we're both in the "zone"

....... Player managers are the root cause of some of our problems.

Thinking outside the square as we both have been lately, could we make certain managers..... disappear?

We could be crap for 5+ years. Keep in mind that the Tigers have been rubbish for 10 years and the Bulldogs for 5 years+.

The sad truth.

Our recruitment does not need to bend over in contract discussion. Overpaying players and stupid player options is on recruitment. If would help if they looked in Qld as well as NSW.

And with just a couple of key signings and a couple more key re-signings, we could be a really competitive team in 2022 and pushing for a premiership within 5 years

I agree with most of your post pete. The focus of the majority of the comments in this thread have been in the quality of the squad which are all relevant but Kevvies coaching is leaving me a little underwhelmed.
We are still doing one off ruck hit ups which is fine at certain times and field positions but we have zero creativity or variation.
Nothing comes off our half, not even a simple drop under.
Lodge needs to not ball play, ever, except for an offload in a tackle.
We dont have any shape inside said 20.
Putting it through the hands every time is simply not Nrl standard.
Even our flat runners telegraph they are decoys because they slow down at the line. They should be running through the line to provide an option and keep the D interested.
Bombing To' o was one of the few times we look like we had a part of a plan.
This is all coaching basics, so whilst Kevvie has excuses for the squad he doesn't for our style and our attacking purpose.
Then there is the D which us just as confused.

Yeah I can somewhat forgive the attack. Round 1 Milf was playing on both sides and linking with his co-half. Some good shapes but I think Kev has purposefully simplified things to the absolute basic level and guys still aren’t able to follow it. This may be why our attack is so one dimensional - because the players are struggling to execute even our current overly simplified strategies. For me the jury is still out on this.

A concern is definitely the defence. Yea, he is working with gumbies but the right side has been swapped so much and not shown any improvement.

The right side has looked like: several combinations of the following:

4th in defender: Riki, TPJ
3rd in: Milf, Croft
2nd in: Niu, Kennar, Mead, Farnworth
Wing: Coates, (Farnworth half a game)

The only constant has been Coates on wing and Isaako at fullback. So who is to blame for the horrendous right side defence?

Is it structural? Are all the players just terrible? Is Coates the issue? Is Isaako not communicating the numbers?

I think it’s obviously all of the above to some extent. Though Boyd was back there and things were no better with the “games best defensive communicator”.

It’s obviously just speculation but I’d find it hard to believe that this teams’ defence would be this bad under Bennett. I’m not sure what the answer is.

I agree in part.
The basic rucking to get inside the red zone I can live with but having no plan to create a misread is useless.
Crash balls and dummy half grunt from TPJ is all we have .

Sam Ayoub reportedly has said this......."Tom would have stayed for life but the broncos did nothing but kick him from pillar to post"

Did we .......how? For not making Tom an offer?

I feel so sorry for Kev. Yes I have issues with elements of his coaching, but he is being set up as the scapegoat for everything and everyone that is wrong with this club and I am going to be beyond livid when it all goes down.

Lets just agree...its a shit show on the field. So many things not working as they should.

You have to prioritise when everything is wrong, on what to fix first
......an old league saying, get your defence right and the rest will take care of itself.
Be an impenetrable brick wall and the other guy will get frustrated and he will make a mistake.

Thats a bit of a stretch nowadays...6 again changes things quite a bit. Still ....I think the principal holds true.

Kevvie imo wasnt employed as coach because he was the best option for the job, he was put in charge because of the outside noise of the old boys.
