The fact that he was actually pretty damn good for us last year makes me think he's another that put on too much bulk for his playing style over the off-season. He was very promising in the jnrs, having played at fullback for both QLD U20s and Aussie Schoolboys I believe.

In his first game(I think) Maranta did something that players rarely do and I'd love to see more actually do, he played to the whistle. While every other player stood around waiting for the ref to make a call he picked the ball up and ran, simple school boy stuff but something players tend to forget so often. He has the heart and I haven't given up on him yet, time will tell however.

I think Maranta can compete at NRL level but that is it, he'll never win you a game because he did something on his IMO. I haven't seen any outstanding quality you would like to see in a good winger like speed or aggression off the line in attack or a good dummy half run with a quick play the ball.

This. THIS. If he has football instincts, he has yet to show them. Wing is such a crucial position. Compare Maranta to Oates. Actually, there is none

Last season I thought this fella looked pretty solid, without being anything special. He looked like he had the makings of your typical winger who plays for a few NRL clubs during his career, but never really stands out. Just a real run of the mill type player.

But he has regressed... a long way.

How about that effort on Leilua? Deary me.

Maranta isn't a finisher. Plain and simple. He's not fast enough to beat the opposition, doesn't have the footwork to dance around them and he certainly doesn't have the strength to go over them. The only thing keeping him in the side is our terrible injury rate and he's reasonably solid under a high ball.

I've never even entertained the idea of Maranta being a first grade player. I've watched a fair few norths games, and while he played Fullback and Centre's a lot, he was never special. It was the players around him that made him look 'good' in the cup.

For 2014, I want to see Hoffman and Yow Yeh as wingers, and put Oates in the forwards, or put Hoffman as 5/8 and keep Oates on wing.

All I can say is.....what happened to Leon Bott????

That was the last time I genuinely thought "There is no way they are catching him" about ANY player in the NRL.

Totally agree with u and he fits in the category with the players named above. Wapau was a good Q cup player but the NRL was simply too fast for him.

not true at all. He's great under a high ball, fast and a good tackler. I reckon the only thing that is bringing him down is the things that people say about him.
