Mason in Limbo.... Should we?

Mason could never handle the first or second hit up responsibility. Whenever this has happened in the past he's gotten pwned. He's like a halfback in that he needs to play behind a dominant pack to be any good. When this scenario unfolds he's quite a good player running on the edges. However he goes MIA whenever the going gets tough.

I still laugh when I see the headline.

I keep picturing Willie Mason trying to play limbo....

with the Johns brothers holding the stick?

I tend to think his response was more to do with what could be seen as an assumption on your part that because he has won premierships and Origins and played for NSW and Australia that makes him a worthwhile recruit with a change of clubs. His view differs in that I tend to think he believes Mason has been living off that reputation and yet not really delivering for a number of years now(making him overrated which is fair enough especially based on recent seasons).

Exactly.

Just because a player wins a premeirship or plays for their state or country, it doesn't automatically make them a good player, and it espeically doesn't mean they are still a good player years after they've acheived all that.

Comparing Mason to Langer/Lewis/Lockyer etc is a rediculous argument. Those guys have actualyl acheived something when playing for their club, state or country. What has Mason really acheived. I can only remember one SOO game where he really had a massive impact.

IMO, some players over-acheive in selection rooms based on the supposed hype surrounding those players, the fact there is no better alternative at the time or the agendas of the selectors. To me Mason is one of these players. So much hype, yet delivered so little.

Yep, playing in rep teams isn't a permanent marker of quality.

Stu Kelly played Origin for Queensland.
Richard Villasanti played for Australia.

That's but 2 off the top of my head. There are many, many more players who are/were not "quality" players in terms of long-term consistent form who managed to make rep teams either on the back of bursts of individual form, or being involved in a particularly good team.

Roosters won't release him to another NRL club, they hate for that team to win the GF with Mason there.

What are the chances of that though

KHunt has more chance at representing australia in softball at the 2016 Olympics than Mason helping a team win the prempiership.

Maybe not the Olympics, but I've heard he's been selected as captain of the Australian Tee Ball team for the world championships in Mogadishu in 2011.

Casey McGuire played for QLD.
Shane Perry won a Premiership with Brisbane.

2 more examples.
