McGuire a lock to take Parker's spot

This could mean we have Napa on the way, or Wayne is pushing the youngens really hard to make spots.

Could we perhaps see Blair and Thaiday as our starting front rowers? I like sammy in the 2nd row out wide but he did a good job for us when moose was out in '15

I feel as though if McGuire was to play lock that the only option (other than if we signed Napa) would be to play the a young prop in the starting role. I do not want Thaiday as he definitely not a prop and plays his best footy in the second row.

Glenn is not a prop either and it would be good to have to have some him coming off the bench with experience to fill in for Thaiday in the second row.

Dodds I don't see as a starting prop as he is purely a defensive prop and with Blair being already at prop and not known for his metres made we need a prop that will make metres when starting. I see Dodds filling in on the bench throughout the year either when injury strikes, origin or if a young prop needs a stint in ISC. Wouldn't have him in him in our strongest 17.

The starting prop spot should go to the player that impresses the most in the pre-season and the other bench spots should go to those who also show they have what it takes to play with impact off the bench.

If McGuire was to play at lock I would like to see the forward pack something like this:

8. Herman Ese'ese/Joe Ofahengaue/Tevita Pangai Jr/Jai Arrow
9. Andrew McCullough
10. Adam Blair
11. Sam Thaiday
12. Matt Gillett
13. Josh McGuire

Interchange

14. Kodi Nikorima/Benji Marshall
15. Alex Glenn
16. Herman Ese'ese/Joe Ofahengaue/Tevita Pangai Jr/Jai Arrow
17. Herman Ese'ese/Joe Ofahengaue/Tevita Pangai Jr/Jai Arrow

I'm on the TPG/Glenn boat, although Arrow will have something to say about that.

McGuire is just fine as a prop, besides being our biggest meter eater. He lacks the ball skills a modern lock needs imo.
Um, he does NOT lack the ball skills at all, just doesn't need to show them in his current role

I maintain our prop rotation isn't good enough to move Moose at this stage ... unless we have another quality prop signing for 2017

I do agree to some extent Ports, but I'm not sure we have anyone who does fit that description.

Blair is perhaps the only middle forward with some proven versatility and the endurance to hack it at 13.

I know McGuire is pretty much just straight up grunt but I reckon he will shine with big minutes and the opportunity to lead from the front.

Yeah, our prop rotation does kinda suck. But then I also haven't been impressed by Arrow at all so far either.

Josh McGuire switch to lock backed by Broncos teammate Matt Gillett

JOSH McGuire wouldn’t look out of place in Brisbane’s No. 13 NRL jersey according to second-rower Matt Gillett.

Brisbane are on the lookout for a replacement for workhorse Corey Parker after the veteran retired at the end of last season.

Youngster Jai Arrow has widely been touted as the man most likely to fill Parker’s shoes, after coming off the bench for the majority of the second half of last season.

However front-rower McGuire, who has started at lock just once since making his NRL debut in 2009, indicated at the end of last year he could be another option for the role.

And Gillett said on Wednesday there would be no reason why McGuire couldn’t make a home for himself at 13.

“He does like to play a lot of minutes and loves that game time,” he said.

“He’s pretty fit as well so no doubt if Josh does play in the No. 13 it will suit him fine.

“He’s more than happy to put his hand up for it.”

Potential captain-in-waiting Darius Boyd also gave McGuire his stamp of approval to take on a more senior role in the forward pack.

McGuire spent the early half of the pre-season as one of the Broncos’ most senior players while Boyd, Gillett and Sam Thaiday only returned to training on Wednesday.

“He’s someone that can lead by example. He probably doesn’t say a lot on the field but he goes out there and does his job like Cozza did as well,” Boyd said.

Meanwhile Gillett expects to take on a more senior role in the pack in 2017 as they look to overcome the loss of Parker, who averaged 27 tackles and 115m per game last year.

Gillett, 28, also played with a question mark over his future for the majority of last year, but has since signed a four-year deal to all but ensure he remains a one-club player.

“It’s a massive relief,” he said.

“I can just concentrate on football and not have to worry about that stuff in the back of my mind.”
