McGuire out for the Season

A few years back Aaron Woods missed a couple of months with the Tigers and Adam Blair (who was playing prop at the time) stepped up - he went from 60-80 metres a game to 100-130. Quality runs too, though admittedly that was a bit easier running off an in-form Farrah.

Yeah, fair enough.

I don't know...to say he's been the best forward since 2014 is a stretch. Dunamis became a better player at Manly but their best players were Watmough, Lawrence and Starling. I'd even throw up Sene-Lefao who had a really underrated year.

You could make an argument for 2015 but then being the best of the worst is hardly worth celebrating. For mine there hasn't been any stand-outs in their pack which is a huge problem since they can't intimidate their opposition at all.

The perfect replacement for Josh McGuire would be able to make 100+ metres on a consistent basis. I haven't seen Lui achieve that at all.

Does any body remember what year it was when McGuire had to carry the team forward because of key injuries?

He was making something like 200m in several consecutive weeks

2011.

Came back after getting poked in the eye by Dodds and played every game like it was his last.

Hannant was seen as the marquee signing but injuries prevented him from playing his best football, leaving it to Josh to carry the front row formation which consisted of Anderson, Hala, Lui, Kenny, Tronc & Carlaw.

Blair needs to improve his hitups quick smart.

I noticed after McGuire went off he had a couple of decent runs. I don't know if that was coincidental or if he lifted knowing McGuire was gone. In any case he is our number 1 prop now, he needs to act and lift accordingly.

Blair noticeably stepped up after Josh left the field last night, I was very impressed. Wallace also started running with a lot more purpose than I've seen from him since the early rounds. As long as someone does that bit extra each week, we'll be fine.

I feel like I still hardly notice any bench impact from Wallace and Dodds.. the last true impact we had off the bench was from Molo, hopefully he's good to go in a few weeks time, we could really use him at the moment.

Honestly, i think Thaiday can step up and cover for McGuire... but as others have stated, it leaves a big hole experience-wise on the bench.

Hopefully Sam and the other boys get through game 3 of origin injury free.

We need to have an open mind about the loss of McGuire.
Parcell at 9 has been impressive and there is no reason why Parcell and McMulloch can't be on the field at the same time. McCulloch's defence as a tidier in the middle is immense.
Think outside the square.
The notion of standard positions is just so outdated- i sound like a broken record about this, but forget positions and numbers and think about defensive and attacking roles, think about the clock and parts of the game, think about fatigue and momentum.
Our team/ squad this year reminds me of the successful West Tigers team going back a bit; mobility in the forwards, skilful playmakers and, dare I say it, creative and well rehearsed plays.
We can also play off the cuff.
The loss of McGuire can be covered - the versatility of McCulloch, I believe, will be a part of that as a 'new' position- rover's dog without a formal old fashioned name for the position.
I actually see genuine promise in Wallace and Dodds really adds starch to the defence.
The big worry is I believe Boyd has picked up a groin injury- they take ages to get right and often come about from limping slightly ... hope his achilles is ok.
I speak from experience.

McCullough played in the back row a couple of years ago. Wallace was hooker. We got thrashed and McCullough sucked. My conclusion was that he is fine in the middle when he goes low and the bigger guys go high and tie them up. McGuire was one of those to go high, and McCullough doesn't have the size or strength to cover that role. Thaiday is better, but Dodds is the closest thing we have to an equivalent IMO, but I doubt he has the motor to play the same minutes.

Brisbane could not afford a blow like that and any thought of a 2015 premiership has to be erased.

The best option they can go with is...

8. Sam Thaiday
9. Andrew McCullough
10. Adam Blair
13. Corey Parker

With Dodds coming in if either Thaiday or Blair fail to step up.

Neither Wallace, Molo or Ofahengaue are ready for the responsibility.

Cmon mate, tougher? Sure. Erased? I doubt it. McGuire is great for us but with the right game plan and certain players stepping up it can be handled.

In all honesty if this makes our premiership hopes impossible then we never truly had premiership hopes

I was always sceptical we'd be able to win it this year, our combinations are still really raw, it's gonna be superrrr tough without McGuire. I have faith we can make it to at least the semi-finals though, 2016 & 2017 are our real windows of opportunity.

I don't know too much about Achilles injuries. Is there any chance that this will be like Darius where he was meant to come back from injury after origin 3 but was back before origin 1? Or is the injury bad enough that hes closer to coming back preseason next year?

Boyd still took 5 months of rehab. McGuire's only hope of returning in 2015 is if the initial diagnosis was wrong.

Edit: Or if he drinks enough of Luke Douglas' blood.

There's always a chance he comes back early, but being safe, I'd say the 6-9 month diagnosis is most likely in this case.. putting his return date between..

December 26th - February 26th

So worst case scenario he's going to miss the pre-season, but he should be good for Round 1.

Any chance of signing a Rod Griffin or another prop in Qcup before June 30 on short 1 year deal

It always is when it goes, but the pop for McGuire was huge. Parker was next to him in the defence and reacted straight away to the noise.

You would have till Tuesday to do it and need enough room on your second tier cap.

Not really relevant but Griffin had 9 offloads last week- 33 for the season from 11 games.
