Neil Henry quits Maroons post to focus on North Queensland

John Lang would work quite well.

I really can't see us hanging on this series without Henry tbh. NSW will be desperate to win and QLD seems to have sfa coaches. As soon as we lose though, what's the bet the wankers in blue stop whinging about Inglis and Folau.

**** I hate NSW.

I agree Henry is a big loss, but the sky is hardly falling when we have the likes of Thurston, Inglis, Slater, Smith etc etc. The biggest factor in Origin, IMO, is motivation.

Motivation and combination. We have the same nucleus of the team this year, and the best motivator in the business in Mal Meninga.

Just need someone with an adequate, analytical, strategic mind and we're fine.

Maybe Let Locky/Smith direct the team both on field and at training. and for the fowards we also have Petro and Price who can grab the youngs guys and teach them a few things at training.

Screw 1 Coach, We could have 4 Assistant Coaches on the field.

Matt Elliot is a Queenslander and his name has been thrown around in Origin calculations previously.

Dunemann would be a good option also. Broncos new assistant coach Anthony Grffin is a shrewed tactician who may also work well.

Losing Henry is a slight bummer but it's not like he was scoring our tries. At this level the players don't need coaching per se, just someone to make sure they are combining. I think Matt Elliott or John Lang would be great but would not be upset if it was Bennett or someone from Q Cup.

QLD are gone. QLD have lost their coach. QLD's recent success has been all due to Henry. Mal is a nuffie who should go back to selling fruit at his over-priced fruit market.

Grab that straw and dont let go. :P

Surely Vautin was there in a motivational capacity like what Meninga is doing now?

Also, does anyone else think Bennett and Meninga might not work well together?

Maybe. They are both motivators and not real tacticians. But I think they are both professional enough not to clash.
If they worked together, I could see Mal pumping them up before the match started, and then Bennett giving his inspirational half time talks.

Yeah, Mal and Wayne never worked well together.
Especially not at Souths in the early 80s. Or the Maroons in 1987-88. They had no success ;-)

As coaches Coxy. I was thinking they would both want to be the big dog so to speak.

I don't get that impression. Given Bennett was more than happy to sit back and let Stephen Kearney be big dog (at least publicly) for the Kiwis I can't see why a similar arrangement wouldn't work for Queensland.

But I think Bennett's attitude would be that Queensland doesn't need him, they need a young coach to step up and get involved to protect the future.

I can see that quote coming back to haunt you

this.

do you guys really think that Lockyer/Thurston/Smith/Inglis need someone telling them where to go and what to do every single match? Origin is the best of the best, and you dont win 4 years in a row because of an assistant coach.

All they need is someone to make sure theyre motivated and passionate, and Mal seems to be doing the job better than anyone ever has. the players can do the rest.

If QLD are in trouble with anything it's because Steve Michaels has been named in the emerging squad again...

+1 to a degree.

I think where someone like Henry is valuable is not so much in telling Inglis, Lockyer etc what to do, but more so what to EXPECT from the particular players the opposition have.

I know the Bennett philosophy was always "I don't care what they do I'm only concerned about what we do" but that's incredibly simplistic. You have to have a game plan that counters your opposition...and an alternative game plan if your opposition comes up with a plan that nullifies yours.

Or recognising that a particular winger comes in a long way and thus leaves them open to a cross field kick early...little things like that which as players they may not notice but are more than capable of exploiting if it's pointed out.

That's where I think Neil Henry was very valuable to Queensland.
