Nikorima > Granville

...and again we come to the real dilemma - whether Hook can craft a gameplan around a rookie/QCup fice eighth that is a simple role (ala Shane Perry 2006).

TBH the midfield bombs during the 9s pissed me off no end. When watching it seemed like the boys used that as an "out of ideas" play, like Wallace did for probably 95% of last tackle options in opposition half last year.

If that's the indication of the "instinctive" football that boys are going to play this year, we're in for another howler.

He need look no further than what Hasler has done with the Buldogs.

Forwards passing/tipping on to each other at the line, with halves/fullback backing up and playing off that.

Barba benefits the most from this type of play.

Sounds good to me, and we already did it a couple of years ago, although only for a couple of games if i remember correctly, and it worked a treat.

Having Thaiday playing backrow exclusively will be a real bonus as well ... with his good ballplaying skills.

the major problem i can see if our kicking game .... we really need better kicks in general play, and more repeat sets from clever kicks close to the tryline.

Fingers crossed we can sort these issues out.

I'm very reluctant to assume that playing fullback in defence two years ago in ISC means you can play anywhere in the back line in NRL.

May I ask if there's any movement in the pecking order for Five-Eighth? Kahu still leading the race? (When he returns from injury), Barba? Strasser? Nikorima?

So you don't think it was a plan to catch the opposition off guard?... Which they did

When watching it, no.

When hearing that analysis on BHQ, maybe. But the fact we didn't contest a lot of them and played for a mistake was not the right way to go (again, Hook percentage football).

E.g. the mid field bomb that Curtis Rona (I think) took a speccy of a catch in the GF, which was pretty much our last roll of the dice. If Glenn (I think) applied any pressure at all he probably would have got a better catch on it then Rona.

im pretty sure the nearest bronco was running at full pace when whoever it was from the cowboys took it.

Daly Cherry Evans was doing mid-field bombs as well.

Neither did Ben Hunt. Is he going to be chastised for everything Peter Wallace did?

No, I'm chastising Griffin's gameplan, which appeared to me on the day of watching the Nines, to be consistent with 2013's bomb it and hope mentality.

I'd agree with you on day one, but the performance on day two was very promising. I'm unsure if Hook happened to recognise it, or it was a plan all along and it just got lost in the mayhem, but it was clear they started playing a more expansive game through the forwards & the likes of Macca, Hunt, Nikorima & Barba would play off the back of it.

Obviously the GF was disappointing but we got off to the worst start imagineable from a player you normally wouldn't expect to make such a mistake & were basically playing catch up from that point. In the second half, the boys were guilty of playing pressure football and trying to score off every play when a cooler head would have prevailed.

How dare these players not knowing what to do in the first edition of a new format.

And don't get me wrong, I completely agree that we over-achieved and showed some awesome signs. I think Alex Corvo's conditioning helped a lot to get us firing towards the end of the day.

The mid-field bombs thing just pisses me off no end in the 13 man game, especially when we fall into this "rut" during games when we are chasing points, and watching us play that way in the final was infuriating (especially before my BHQ friends informed me that was all part of the gameplan and not just a left over of our structure from 2013).

I understand where you're coming from but the way I see it, the play only came about because the team started poorly and didn't have the options like a Benny Barba to pass to, so they went with the lottery option which in fairness took an incredible take from Rona to defuse.

On the other hand, I had no problems when we used it against the Eels. Seemed like a tactical ploy and it paid off both times.
