Nines / Trial Games

True, but the finger is hovering.

It's not that we lost of course. It's that we clocked off too often at crucial points, especially goal line defence. We talk a lot about leadership on the field, and the signs there are promising with Croft and Carrigan stepping up, however, more than ever we need leadership off the field.

It's well and good to analyse and drive the data, it's another to synthesise that and create a cohesive group which plays for each other. For all of Seibold's talk about building cohesion, I didn't see that on our goal line last night. Key players - like Milford, Haas and Fifita looked lost, or disinterested.

For mine, goal line defence is a measure of a team's heart and soul. Yes, it's just a trial and yes, too early to hit the panic button however, the key take away I have from this game is that Seibold needs to inspire this team. There is more than enough talent here to make the 4. However, you won't find heart and soul in a spreadsheet. I wonder if Seibold has what it takes to inspire this hugely talented team of unguided missiles
Not even hovering for me. I must just be the weird guy on here lol. Watched the game twice and still not concerned. Maybe because of my experiences through my sports and trial/practice matches we had. It never indicated how good or bad our seasons went. I'm happy to wait until we are into our season before i chuck the ****s.

We know that our attack should definitely be better, with (hopefully) no McCullough at hooker, no Boyd at fullback and a proper halfback.

The approach to defence is definitely something that will require a lot of work to get right. They just have to put way more effort into it.

Were the respective teams from the 2006 trial, considering the Storm put 50 on the Broncos the year before in a regular season game, it was a surprise they didn't win by more.

1. Bird (I’ve been a Jamayne promoter, but I can’t deny Bird is better)
2. Oates (Farnworth if unfit)
3. Staggs
4. Arthars
5. Farnworth (Coates if Herbie is already in)
6. Milf
7. Croft
8. Haas
9. Turpin
10. TPJ
11. Fifita
12. Glenn
13. Carrigan

14. Dearden (risky long-term, don’t want to ‘Hunt’ him, but like Turpin, he is always looking to make something happen)
15. Flegler
16. Hopoate
17. Kennedy

last two are only there through injury and Joe O’s absence, and I doubt we’ll get an exemption for Riki or Bullemor

Whoops meant to post this in the Rd 1 team thread

"ANDREW MCCULLOUGH
"Did his usual work from dummy-half but didn’t pose any genuine attacking threat. A solid bench option."

How can you say Macca is a solid bench option when he "didn't pose any genuine attacking threat"? So we play with half a hooker?
If you need proof that Macca completely sucks the life out of both the defence and attack you only need compare those two halves. To his credit he did actually use his brain at one point: dummied and kicked a decent grubber for the line. It didn't come off but it's the Dearden kind of play you only see from him a couple of times a season.

Croft's kicking game looked better than Milford's but it's still not world class.

Geez, when you see that Melbourne side laid out like that, it really is little wonder they were getting themselves in hot water financially not long after this with the salary cap.

Did anyone notice this? Dobbo on triple m this morning said that at 16-0, Jai Arrow was about to be sent to the bin when the Broncos said, “No, no, it’s a trial, we don’t want to play against 12 men.”

If that’s true, then what is wrong with practicing against 12 men? It’ll happen this season at some stage. And why would the ref listen to them?

That was the exact point at which we clocked off.

If this is true how is it not a good thing in terms of the teams mentality? They don’t want to take the easy way out, for a team that have spent most of the last decade taking short cuts and maccas trips I am really struggling to see this as a negative.

Maybe it was a coincidence Who knows. It looked to me like they thought they had it won.

Well, to me it looked like nobody was thinking after the first 20 minutes.

If they did think it was won, then the trial totally served its purpose, they learned that if they do something like that in the season proper, they may well get bitten on the behind once more.

Of course, the big question is, is this team smart enough to figure it out? That is a BIG question.

It is a BIG question, and for mine, it is mostly on Seibold to provide the answers

Yet we were happy for them to send Don off after the professional foul on Bird.

When exactly was Arrow meant to be going to the bin??
