Nines / Trial Games

Seibs has some work to do! I CBF signing up for NRL to watch the whole game but man there there some really low IQ errors and choices made when we switched off.

RE Boyd? Just doesnt have the pace - i worry anyone will get on the outside of him - instant overlap and poor old Birdy will be playing cover defence down that side all day.

Yet we were happy for them to send Don off after the professional foul on Bird.

When exactly was Arrow meant to be going to the bin??

That was Jai Arrow.

I didn't hear any protest from the referees mic, it may have been coming from the coaches.

Good to see some balanced views, but there's still a lot of 'sky is falling' views too.
For those in that second boat, please remember we comfortably won the first half with a team that you would think closely resembles our Rd 1 team.
Yes we pooped the bed in the second half, but don't overlook the changes to the team.
We had Macca out there, Isaako instead of Bird, Deardon was out there, even fricken Gamble - it's not like a first string side.
Some folks are saying they played like reserve graders, well, quite a few of them were.

Exactly. And I have no doubt the regular first graders were instucted to not make things easy on the reserve graders, especially in defence - give the coaching staff a good look at what some of these guys are made of. These trials are not games to be taken seriously.

Outside of Dearden's brief cameo in the first half when he came on for Bird, both Dearden and Gamble only came on after the Titans had notched up 28 points. For all intents and purposes, that was the Round 1 line-up with Isaako and Farnworth coming in for their respective players.

So, notwithstanding some very poor individual efforts, Isaako has just said goodbye to the custodian position, given it is arguably the most important position to guide the team defensively.

Agreed... although I would say that our middle rotation will be different. I saw an issue when we increased our reliance on Flegler, Kennedy and Riki as the middles for an extended period of time.... I believe Haas lasted into the 2nd half (maybe 50 min mark or so) and Offa wasn't brought on till late in the second half??

From the trials I think there has been a strategy to start TPJ in the middle before moving to Glenn's edge and playing out the game. However, I think we need TPJ to stay in the middle until Offa comes back, given Flegler, Kennedy and Riki were pretty much unable to hold the ruck on their own and reverse the momentum that the titans had built up.

We spent the majority of the game working it out of our own end after building up the 16-0 lead and just couldn't win the ruck back to get us on the front foot again.

Potentially in round 1 Haas and Carrigan will also play bigger minutes so those guys aren't left on their own

I think he said goodbye to it before a ball was even kicked. For good reason based on what we've seen, but it was very telling that Seibold went with Dearden at fullback before he considered Isaako.

Also extremely telling he replaced Arthars with Coates before he considered replacing him with Boyd. It was almost like Seibold wouldn't consider his options at left centre and went with Richie Kennar instead.

Flegler and Carrigan came off for Kennedy and Riki and then they came off for Ofahengaue and Carrigan after the Rein try, so fairly early in the second half.

The game was basically over after the Copley try.

I found it odd they didn't give Bullemor some more minutes either. I think after his first stint Haas should have hit the showers and we should have had a closer look at Lodge's replacement.

Only watched the 3 minute hilights.. so a limited viewpoint but time enough to notice wingers coming in off the wing for a couple of tries let in and Isaako dawdling to take the conversion when the last try was scored. How much longer will the awesome training and outstanding KPIs and OKRs and performance measures be enough when the onfield performance is so dismal?

Broncs to miss the 8 this year and round 4 for first article about Milf needing to step up and justify his price tag:) Would love to be wrong but I dont see how even an optimistic judge can view this team as top 4 worthy.

Worth noting Cory Paix scored for the Magpies in their 20-12 loss to the Jets.

2:38 and you'll have to forgive the lovely footage of a beam, but here you see Paix take on the line and muscle his way over. Good stuff and even though it's not the type of run that will pay off in the NRL, it's good to see the acceleration to beat the first marker and the strength to force his way over.

Injuries permitting I'm 100% confident he'll play NRL this year.

A lot of us need to calm the **** down, at the end of the day these are only trial matches they mean absolutely nothing towards the results of the 2020 season. Our main players just needed a little game time and wouldn't of went completely all out because they know they have to get healthy off the field. There's players that already are picked it would of only been a few the coaches would be looking at they are the players going all out like Bird and Hoppa.

He was more decisive and sure of his role on Saturday. Had clearly worked hard on understanding the position.

Just re-watched the titans trial....

Lol I have to laugh re-reading some of the comments on here after watching it with less emotional investment/bias myself.

A few things stood out for me...

Did anyone factor in that this is a trial, with unlimited interchanges? Seibold seemed to make no changes in the first half at all, which would be fantastic in an nrl game but led to fatigue in this game with the titans subbing their forwards every 10 mins it looked like (weaker defence by broncos and more energy in attack by the titans increased near half time). The titans had incredibly line speed in the last 25 mins of the game and wanted it more. Does anyone seriously believe that lisoni and Wallace would be sprinting up in the 70tj minute of an nrl game with proper interchanges?

Dearden is looking amazing. He steadied the game the last 20 mins for us after that shocking period. Amazing for a 19 year old.

Kennedy and riki had some poor defensive reads but their runs were very good I thought, still both good options for 10 minute bench cameos but I actually think hopoate is a better option if longer minutes are needed as he has more defensive energy.

Boyd is shit.... There's no sugar coating it. He looks worse in the re-watch. Arthurs looks like a big step up from him.

Macca is shit too but he's a very solid 2nd hooker. He may not be an attacking whiz, far from it, but for 20 min stints in the middle of a game while Turpin improves his consistency and becomes an 80 min hooker or paix develops, he is suitable for sure.

I think confidence is a big issue with both of the above at the moment.

Flegler may lose us a game, maybe 2, during the season but he is awesome to have on the team. A hot head like that makes the opposition look over their shoulder a little when they hit our halves.

Isaakos problem is something he has had even in his first year... He can't break a tackle to save his life. And he is low on confidence as well I believe.

Bird is in for a very big year. I reckon he will be a top 5 fullback by the end of the year if he stays injury free. His game awareness is remarkable considering his time out of the game and his lack of experience at fb.

Fifita needs to sign his contract and stop listening to his all stars team mates. If he keeps on only turning up for the special plays his value should and could drop down after a few rounds.

Carrigan will have a break out year. How he didn't make the origin squad this preseason astounded me at the time, but now even more so.

We will miss ofa, I think ppl will realise how important his rotation off the bench is these first 2 rounds.

And... Is gamble the tallest half in the nrl? Haha

I was a fan at giving Issako 1st shot at fullback but he's not up to it or defiantly needs time in Qcup. He shouldn't be just shut out but he needs to find he's form for fullback. He isn't breaking tackles or looking very dangerous during his time on the field in the trials. Let him learn to properly play fullback in Qcup and bring him in later on in the season and drop Boyd back to reserve grade.

I appreciate the insight BP, but also, I wasn't necessarily complaining about defence - although of course that is a problem - but that could have been compensated for by the Broncos scoring more points. We only lost by 6. And those extra points may have been scored with more Bird and less Isaako.

Isaako fails in all aspects of being a top grade winger as well. Maybe he has some pace but that’s about it. He’ll be moved on once his current contract expires..
