That almost never happens though, because no team is going to give up a young star for nothing. The destination team (top 4 team) has all the bargaining power once again.
Getting draft picks as part of the trade doesn't help at all. All that happens is you draft another young gun and spend 2 years training him up to play for Geelong, who'll give you their draft pick so you can do it again.

Lynch, May, Prestia, Cameron, Treloar, Adams, Shiel, Steele, Saad, Dickson, Hall, O'Meara and many others I'm forgetting. Taranto and Rankine so far this trade period.It is nowhere near as common as you are implying. GWS is a basketcase and Brisbane hasn't lost any kid it has wanted to keep since Schache and he's a total bust anyway. The Suns have lost Rankine but he's going to get them at least pick 5. Outside of that, even Melbourne has lost their star 21 year old and they were the defending premier. The system isn't perfect but it id much better than the nothing the NRL has.
