Interesting to see how Luke Thompson goes, I reckon there would be a few desperate teams willing to throw him a bone if he returns well.

It should be an interesting game as well. Newcastle at home on FTA TV against the strongest team Canterbury have been able to name all season. Canterbury will be looking to build some confidence heading into 2024 and I'm sure they'll be looking to make ammends after their abhorrent performance earlier this season.

I'd be shocked if Thompson remains in Australia. Especially if he winds up at a club that could use him (Cronulla, St George, Manly etc.). He struck me as one of those players that's light on their feet but struggled to make an impression otherwise. He certainly wasn't worth what the Bulldogs were allegedly paying him.

I wonder if we'll see Thomas Weaver before the end of the season?

Would love to see Weaver, he looks like an absolute superstar in the making.

Penrith have apparently applied for an exemption and want to include Luke Sommerton as a replacement for Mitch Kenny.

This highlights how silly the current 22 man team-list Tuesday is for me. I presume the reason they couldn't name Sommerton is because of the rules regarding train and trial players. I presume they needed to make it look unforeseen, which is why they need to call for an emergency exemption, when the whole point of the 22 man squad is that you're locked into those players.

It's either that, or Penrith felt entitled to a 23 man squad. I'll be nice and give them the benefit of the doubt.

Can't train and trial players pretty much play at any time after round 11 ... or is it only until August 3 when the 30 man squads had to be finalised?

I did a double take on this today as well. Why should they be able to draft another player in just one day after team list Tuesday? I doubt either injury or illness have just raised their head today. They have a hooker (Soni) in their team already, so they really shouldn't be allowed to draft in another. One of the other named players should have to moonlight. It just makes a mockery of the rules.

That's my understanding, but maybe clubs have to prove why they're turning to a train and trial player instead of somebody in their NRL and Development squads?

The whole system needs more transparency. Once again, we're past August 4 and Brisbane supposedly only have 27 players in their squad when they need to name 30. I mean maybe they have and Smoothey, Sailor & Rogers were all upgraded with Te Kura & Leota being added to the development list. It would just be nice for the fans to know.

The exemption for Sommerton was granted. I wonder how many the NRL have knocked back? It seems like they're happy to grant them, but a club has never developed a track record to really challenge them.

Are we past the mid-season transfer deadline now?

Are we past the mid-season transfer deadline now?
From what I understand, the first Monday of the month (August 7th) was the cut-off date so the squads should be set in stone.

Are we past the mid-season transfer deadline now?
The mid season deadline that's actually 75% through the calendar year (Nov to Nov) and 89% of the regular season.

We also released EQW and TC... do they count towards the 30-man roster in the same way Isaako did last year??

Well EQW has officially gone to the Dogs and TC was sacked for provable reasons, so I assume they are both off the books.

They're off the books, but you may recall that we were able to carry over a portion of the salary cap last year, because Isaako was released, but still counted towards the 30-man squad

Did Isaako actually count?

I remember we were all speculating on this the exact same time last year but I don't remember drawing any conclusions.

The only conclusion I came to is that we clearly care more about this than the NRL.
