And then you get Gould saying shit like, “That was such a great play - don’t take that off them”.
This... this will be the common theme if they bring forward passes in.

It wont be the blatant forward passes that cause an issue it will be the marginal ones that no one ever cared about before... but the technology will be sitting there so they will have to use it and they wont be able to dispute it as inconclusive, because then what would be the point of the technology

You’d hope that during the blind analysis of the technology that they find the sweet spot for people to notice forward passes with the eye and then calibrate it for that, and keep it to themselves when it’s below the threshold of human detection but still marginally forward. It’s like how technology can now synthesise most instruments and play them at a tempo with an accuracy and consistency that no human could, so to stop it from feeling soulless we intentionally program minimal amounts of inconsistency.

Otherwise we’ll end up with a game that gets pulled up every 3rd pass from hooker to prop. It may not be in the spirit of 100% officiating accuracy but at the end of the day it’s entertainment - footy is more art than science.

That sounds far too sophisticated for the NRL... and also my puny brain.

Can also see Gould reverting to "wait why is that one forward, but the one before wasn't?... Get rid of it... in fact get rid of the video ref altogether"

It's like in Cricket, you let them bowl no-balls but as soon as a wicket drops it hurts them the most

I think it will ruin the game tbh. Like i said about the premier league with the offsides, its so nit picky you are getting players literally offside for their big toe being slightly ahead of the last defender.

I hope QLD still dont let him in the state
From the sounds of things, 80% of the players have already caught it
Why not? Being vaccinated doesn't stop you catching it, or spreading it to other people, it's to reduce the symptoms when you do eventually catch it. The fact that there is a mandate in place is insanity.

I reckon it would as well...

I dont care if the last pass to beat the fullback is forward, the damage was done 30m upfield with great play to beat the defensive line.

I dont really care if the dummy half throws slight forward passes from the ruck... I do care when they randomly call one forward but have let 30 go... but in general the forward pass has had no impact on the play.

Also I doubt the tech would be running live to call forward passes in real time... I doubt processing would be quick enough to catch it.

The only forward passes that I really care about are the ones that have caused the line break in the first place.... the ones where a half or hooker take it to the line and the forward pass is the one that gets the line break or is the pass that breaks the defence open (like a blatantly forward offload that is missed).

If it's the last pass on a play where the defence has already been beaten by the play happening inside then I dont really care if it's forward.

So if a winger runs 80 and drops the ball over the line, you’re happy to let that go?

Let me rephrase then... I dont care enough about nothing minor forward passes for the NRL to go out of their way to develop a technology that doesnt readily exist... especially a technology that might pick up extremely minor forward passes that arent necessarily visible to the naked eye, just to take tries away.

I already mentioned that blatant forward passes, which create the try piss me off... but that is on the officials to pick up and they dont... or they call backwards passes forward.

Technology required to overrule your example is watching a replay of what they're already filming... it was common sense to bring it in and they still **** that up on occassion.

Now they're talking about bringing in a technology that doesnt exist and will effectively become the 'truth' on passes.

Can only imagine the scenes when a game winning try is brought back because a minor nothing forward pass is pulled up by the technology... and it's all because the officials have been missing the blatant ones right in front of them that are visibly forward on replays.

Why not just let vid refs adjudicate on forward passes??

If it's too tight to call on replay, because you're mainly watching how it comes out of the hands, then they just indicate it as inconclusive, but at least they would have a rule there to turnover the absolute howlers... which to me are the ones that I do care about

Yeah this. If there is leeway, it just gets abused. At the moment the ref's failure to call forward passes is allowing plays to happen that shouldn't. Where defenders have defended well and positioned themselves effectively and they are punished by an illegal play that doesn't get called, even if that is a fullback that gets beaten by a forward pass after the initial break. It's no different to an illegal block play that takes out defenders, if they can't score within the rules, they don't deserve to.

Teams are just going to have to err on the side of caution when it comes to passes, which is no bad thing.

What I am concerned about is the system they use. If it's only going to be done via a chip in the football, it will be easy to exploit, as the momentum of the runner can not be accurately taken in to consideration. If the passer subtly moves the ball forward in relation to their body before passing it, that initial movement will be used as the base point of momentum (ie, the speed the runner is going) and anything less "forward" than that momentum will be considered "backwards". To make it accurate, they'd want to have something attached to the player to establish the true base point, and that wouldn't be hard since they all already have trackers built in to their jerseys.

And even then, I am still concerned by how "forward" some passes will be that are technically legal. If the passer is running at full speed (around 8-10 metres per second), and they throw a long ball out to their winger that takes 2 seconds to get there, they could legitimately throw the ball from 20 metres out and have it caught a metre from the try line and it will still be considered "backwards" by the momentum rule.

“The one thing I will say is that I have the green light to play in Round 1 and that’s all that matters,” Taumalolo told News Corp.

“I have a pretty strong opinion that my medical information is for myself only and I like to keep it that way. But I will be playing this season for the Cowboys.

“I’m happy I get to play and I’m glad I’m OK to play in the NRL this year.

“I’ve tested negative quite a few times at training ... eventually we are all bound to get Covid.

News Corp confirmed he got covid during the off season.

Straight from the Novak playbook. I hope he remains private about any injuries he gets during the year, after all his medical privacy is so important.

Va’a 127m and strong game in first game of SG Ball for Roosters.

Still not sold but taking an interest.

Staggs is out of the all stars game apparently. Replaced by Naden.

Surprised by that, hopefully not injured.

Could be a sign that he wants to focus entirely on the Broncos season
